Аннотация

Microorganisms represent the largest component of global biodiversity and play essential roles in biogeochemical cycling, biomedical innovation, and environmental resilience. However, the majority of microbial diversity remains unexplored or inadequately conserved, which poses a threat to scientific reproducibility, public health, and sustainable bioeconomic development. This review evaluates emerging strategies for conserving microorganisms of biomedical and environmental relevance, emphasizing the preservation of viability, genetic stability, and functional integrity across diverse taxa and microbial communities. Traditional methods, such as cryopreservation and lyophilization, are foundational; they present limitations for extremophiles, strict anaerobes, and complex microbiomes. Recent developments incorporate omics-guided preservation, dry-state technologies, and synthetic biology to improve long-term stability and functional fidelity. Innovations such as next-generation freeze-drying, microbiome-level conservation, and engineered microbial systems enhance storage, transport, and reproducibility while reducing dependence on cold-chain infrastructure. The review further addresses regulatory, ethical, and infrastructural challenges related to global biobanking and equitable access to microbial resources. New frameworks prioritize the conservation of functional microbial assemblages over isolated strains, supporting applications in antimicrobial discovery, advanced biotherapeutics, agriculture, and environmental remediation. Advancing microbial conservation is therefore essential for protecting planetary health, advancing biomedical research, and supporting a resilient, sustainable bioeconomy amid global environmental change.
