Microbial Genetic Resource Conservation Techniques.
Аннотация
Microbial genetic resources are a key part of global biodiversity. They are critical for biomedical innovation, environmental sustainability, and industrial biotechnology. In the past 10 years, microbiome research, synthetic biology, and systems biology have expanded how we view microorganisms. Microorganisms are now seen as more than just pathogens or environmental agents. As a result, preserving microbial diversity has become a strategic priority. The microbial resource ensures scientific reproducibility, supports biotechnology, and protects ecosystem services. This chapter gives a broad overview of microorganisms important to biomedicine and the environment. It examines the main principles, methods, and limits of their conservation. The chapter highlights the challenges of maintaining microbes' viability, genetic stability, and functional integrity. It discusses common preservation methods, such as subculturing, refrigeration, ultra-freezing, cryopreservation, and lyophilization. It also reviews which methods fit best based on biology and intended use. Finally, this chapter highlights the need for advanced preservation strategies that combine cryobiology, materials science, and synthetic biology. Microbial conservation is presented as a crucial part of building a sustainable bioeconomy and strong global health systems.
