Аннотация

PURPOSE/AIMS: This qualitative study explored the feasibility, acceptability, and perceived benefits of a 12-week piano training program tailored for music novices with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Building on prior findings, the protocol was iteratively modified to address cognitive and emotional needs, incorporating both group and individual sessions.

METHODS

Seven older adults with MCI (mean age=79.7) completed semi-structured interviews before and after the program. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed using conventional content analysis. Feasibility was assessed via recruitment, retention, adherence, and practice engagement. Acceptability was assessed through semi-structured interviews and satisfaction surveys.

RESULTS

Four major themes emerged (1) holistic impacts on mind, emotion and self-identity (2) learning experience and skill development; (3) drivers of engagement and adoption, and (4) program design features to optimize learning experiences. Feasibility benchmarks were met, and five participants pursued continued piano instruction post-study.

CONCLUSIONS/ IMPLICATIONS: The revised piano program was feasible and acceptable, offering holistic benefits that extended beyond cognitive stimulation. Piano learning may serve as a person-centered, emotionally supportive intervention that fosters resilience, autonomy, and self-identity in individuals living with MCI.
