Benign HPV-associated oral, oropharyngeal and sinonasal lesions in anatomical and oral pathology laboratories in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated benign epithelial lesions often exhibit overlapping clinical and histopathological features, making differential diagnosis challenging. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicodemographic profiles of benign HPV-associated epithelial lesions diagnosed in anatomical and oral pathology laboratories. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted and included cases diagnosed between January 2014 and April 2023 in six pathology laboratories. Rendered diagnoses were squamous papilloma (SP), condyloma acuminatum (CA), verruca vulgaris (VV

Comparative Analysis of Oral and Oropharyngeal Mucosal Lesions of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis and Other Infectious Granulomatous Diseases and Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) and other infectious granulomatous diseases (IGDs) may present with oral/oropharyngeal mucosal lesions (OOPML). IGD-OOPML can result from fungal, parasitic, or bacterial infections, and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) represents the main differential diagnosis. ATL, other IGD, and SCC share overlapping clinical and epidemiological features, making diagnostic suspicion challenging. This study compared sociodemographic and clinical characteristics among ATL, other IGD, and SCC. Descriptive, comparative, and multivariable logistic regression analyses were pe

Clinicopathologic features and molecular characterization of oropharyngeal carcinomas harboring low-risk human papillomavirus.

Although the association between high-risk (HR) subtypes of human papillomavirus (HPV) and oropharyngeal carcinoma (OC) is well established, the role and biologic significance of low-risk (LR) HPV in these tumors remains poorly understood. In this series, we present 4 OCs with LR-HPV positivity by in situ hybridization (ISH). The cases occurred in 3 males and 1 female with a mean age of 67.8 years. All tumors demonstrated a papillary/exophytic architecture, and 2 showed overt stromal invasion. Morphologically, the tumors exhibited a spectrum ranging from keratinizing neoplasms with relatively

Effects of Deep Learning-Based Reconstruction on the Quality of Accelerated Contrast-Enhanced Neck MRI.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the quality of deep learning-reconstructed turbo spin-echo (DL-TSE) and conventionally interpolated turbo spin-echo (Conv-TSE) techniques in contrast-enhanced MRI of the neck. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted DL-TSE and Conv-TSE images were acquired using 3T scanners from 106 patients. DL-TSE employed a closed-source, 'work-in-progress' (WIP No. 1062, iTSE, version 10; Siemens Healthineers) algorithm for interpolation and denoising to achieve the same in-plane resolution (axial: 0.26 × 0.26 mm²; coronal: 0.29 × 0.29 mm²) while reducing scan times by 1

Clinical and Imaging Features of Syphilis from Head to Toe.

Syphilis, a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum, is resurging globally. It is classified as acquired or congenital syphilis. Acquired syphilis progresses through primary, secondary, and tertiary stages. Pathologically, acquired syphilis is characterized by vasculopathy, perivascular infiltrates in syphilitic lesions, and reactive lymphadenopathy. Primary and secondary syphilis frequently manifest with cutaneous and mucosal lesions accompanied by extensive lymphadenopathy at the initial sites of sexual contact, such as the genitalia, oropharynx, and anorectum. These manifestations

Quantitative MRI to Characterize Hypoxic Tumors in Comparison to FMISO PET/CT for Radiotherapy in Oropharynx Cancers.

Intratumoral hypoxia is associated with a poor prognosis and poor response to treatment in head and neck cancers. Its identification would allow for increasing the radiation dose to hypoxic tumor subvolumes. 18F-FMISO PET imaging is the gold standard; however, quantitative multiparametric MRI could show the presence of intratumoral hypoxia. Thus, 16 patients were prospectively included and underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT, 18F-FMISO PET/CT, and multiparametric quantitative MRI (DCE, diffusion and relaxometry T1 and T2 techniques) in the same position before treatment. PET and MRI sub-volumes were segm

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of the minor salivary glands: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Polymorphous adenocarcinoma is the third most common malignant salivary gland tumor. Within polymorphous adenocarcinoma, cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands is a rare subtype and resembles papillary thyroid carcinoma histopathologically. Diagnostically, cribriform adenocarcinoma of salivary glands is challenging for pathologists and surgeons alike as initial presentation and cytologic nuclear features can be easily confused with papillary thyroid carcinoma arising from a thyroglossal duct remnant or lingual thyroid. CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 64-year-old Caucasian woman

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of minor salivary glands presented as a nasopharyngeal tumor: A case report highlighting the significance of cytology.

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland (CAMSG) is a rare malignancy presenting cytologic features resembling papillary thyroid carcinoma, localized in the oral cavity and oropharynx. Although cervical lymph node (LN) metastasis is a frequent manifestation of CMSG, there are few publications evaluating its cytology. The aim of this report was to present a CAMSG in an unusual location in the light of cytologic features, thereby enriching the spectrum of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) differential diagnosis. We report a case of a 76-year-old woman presenting an enlarged submandib

Phase II/III Randomized Controlled Trial of Concomitant Hyperfractionated Radiotherapy plus Cetuximab (Anti-EGFR Antibody) or Chemotherapy in Locally Advanced Head and Neck Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, there is marked variation in overall incidence and presentation of head and neck cancers, these cancers account for 11.5 per 100,000 population in G.C.C states. Concomitant chemotherapy and external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) is indicated in such cancers with aim of organ preservation, control and possible cure. Hyper fractionated radiotherapy with concomitant chemotherapy or cetuximab is a lesser explored option. In this study we wish to assess the tolerability and efficacy of cetuximab with altered fractionation and compare this with the chemotherapy (cisplatin). MATER

An update on myofibromas and myofibromatosis affecting the oral regions with report of 24 new cases.

OBJECTIVES: Myofibromas are uncommon soft tissue tumors exhibiting considerable histopathologic overlap with other benign and malignant entities. The treatment of lesions arising in the oral cavity is controversial. Here, we present 24 new cases and review the literature. STUDY DESIGN: A search for oral myofibromas was performed within the archives of the University of Florida Oral Pathology and Surgical Pathology Services (1994-2015). Demographic information and immunohistochemical results were recorded. MEDLINE and Web of Science were searched for reports of myofibroma of the oral cavity an

Sampling sites for detection of feline herpesvirus-1, feline calicivirus and Chlamydia felis in cats with feline upper respiratory tract disease.

OBJECTIVES: Feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV) and Chlamydia felis are involved in feline upper respiratory tract disease (FURTD). Clinical signs caused by these agents can overlap, and the involvement of certain pathogens is often unpredictable. The objectives of this study were to compare detection rates of FHV-1, FCV and C felis at different sampling sites, and to investigate the correlation between positive test results and clinical signs in cats with FURTD. METHODS: Swabs were taken from the nose, pharynx, tongue and conjunctiva of 104 cats with signs of FURTD. Real-t

Risk of dysphagia and speech and language delay in PHACE syndrome.

PHACE (posterior fossa, hemangioma, arterial lesions, cardiac, and eye) syndrome consists of infantile hemangiomas of the head and neck along with a spectrum of noncutaneous anomalies. Neurodevelopmental abnormalities have also been noted. Here we describe the association between PHACE syndrome and abnormalities in oropharyngeal development and coordination manifesting as dysphagia or speech and language delay. A retrospective chart review was conducted of 34 patients with PHACE syndrome. Data were collected from prior clinical notes and radiographic studies and the results of a comprehensive

Oropharyngeal syphilis among patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

OBJECTIVES: There has been a reemergence of syphilis among men who have sex with men over the past decade, especially in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This study was aimed at describing the oropharyngeal manifestations of secondary syphilis in HIV-infected patients. We also sought to determine the clinical risk factors for the development of oropharyngeal syphilitic lesions in patients with secondary syphilis. METHODS: We performed an observational, comparative, retrospective study of HIV-infected patients who were admitted to a tertiary referral center in Mexico

Sarcomatoid (spindle cell) carcinoma of the head and neck mucosal region: a clinicopathologic review of 103 cases from a tertiary referral cancer centre.

Sarcomatoid carcinomas are biphasic tumors proven to be monoclonal dedifferentiated forms of conventional squamous carcinomas. This study evaluates their clinicopathologic characteristics in head and neck mucosal sites and the problems in distinguishing them from other spindle cell tumors. A total of 103 cases with a confirmed diagnosis of sarcomatoid carcinoma accessioned in the pathology department of a tertiary referral cancer centre over a period of 7 years (2004-2010) were studied. An algorithm used for their diagnosis is presented. Ages of the patients were 22-90 years (median 53 years),

Synergistic effect of interleukin-6 and endoplasmic reticulum stress inducers on the high level of ABCG2 expression in plasma cells.

ABCG2 is a transporter preferentially expressed in a primitive subpopulation of cells and recently reported as a surviving factor for trophoblasts. To date, manner of ABCG2 expression in lymphoid tissues is not known. Immunohistochemically, strong ABCG2 expression was found in a small proportion of plasma cells mainly located in the interfollicular space of lymphoid tissues. The number of ABCG2-high plasma cells increased in interleukin-6- (IL-6) rich lesions, such as Castleman's disease of plasma cell type. Plasma cells are subjected to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress when excess proteins a

Tonsillolith: a report of three clinical cases.

Tonsillolith is a rare dystrophic calcification as a result of chronic inflammation of the tonsils. Three asymptomatic cases of tonsillolith are reported, incidentally discovered through panoramic radiographs, which showed different sizes of radiopaque images, varying from 2 to 5 mm; cases I and III images did not overlap the mandible ramus, which led to a probable diagnosis of soft tissue calcification. Case II had radiopaque unilateral images, with osseous tissue density, overlapping the mandibular ramus, leading to a benign intra-osseous lesion, which was considered as differential diagnosi

Epidermotropic precursor T-cell lymphoma with highly aggressive clinical behavior simulating localized pagetoid reticulosis.

We describe a 43-year-old patient with a solitary, eczematous plaque on his right nipple that had developed during the previous 6 weeks. Histopathology revealed a superficial band-like infiltrate of medium to large-sized pleomorphic lymphocytes with striking epidermotropism. The tumor cells expressed a T-phenotype (CD3+, CD20-) and were CD30-, CD4-, and CD8-negative. A diagnosis of localized pagetoid reticulosis (Woringer-Kolopp disease) with possible large cell transformation was proposed. A cervical lymph node excised 2 months later showed features of a highly aggressive blastoid precursor T

Direct detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and M. avium complex in tissue specimens from cattle through identification of specific rRNA sequences.

Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Direct test and Accuprobe M. avium Complex test, rely on recognition of specific rRNA sequences. The present investigation included sequentially a pre-evaluation study and a study on non-visible lesion tuberculin reactor cattle. As regards the first study, tests were performed on tissue samples from 14 reactors with tuberculous-like lesions and from as many lesion-free non-reactors, using culture findings as a reference. MTD and Accuprobe M. Avium Complex tests proved positive in 12 and 2 reactors respectively. Both tests proved negative in all non-reactors. Data con
