International Olympic Committee consensus-driven guidelines for athlete mental health support at sporting events.

Event-related mental health problems among elite athletes are prevalent. However, empirical details on the development and implementation of a comprehensive mental health support programme at international sporting events are lacking. Therefore, this paper aims to provide consensus-driven, evidence-based recommendations to guide such a development and implementation. An 8-stage process based on the RAND-UCLA Appropriateness Method was adopted to collate and synthesise the available literature on this topic, to identify gaps in the scientific evidence and to enlist expert experience from a mult

The Effect of Skating Exercises as High-Intensity Interval Training on Elderly Stroke Patients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can optimize recovery by complementing the low cardiovascular fitness intensities typically achieved in stroke rehabilitation programs. Skating exercise is an HIIT workout developed based on ice skating movements, and we investigated the effects of this exercise on the cardiorespiratory fitness of elderly patients with minor stroke. METHODS: Participants aged 65 or older with a National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score of 3 or lower were recruited. This study was designed as a randomized controlled trial, in which the inter

Evidence for compositionality in fMRI visual representations via Brain Algebra.

Electrophysiological and neuroimaging studies have revealed how the brain encodes various visual categories and concepts. An open question is how combinations of multiple visual concepts are represented in terms of the component brain patterns: are brain responses to individual concepts composed according to algebraic rules? To explore this, we generated "conceptual perturbations" in neural space by averaging fMRI responses to images with a shared concept (e.g., "winter" or "summer"). After thresholding to ensure specificity, we applied these perturbations to the neural pattern associated with

Comparisons of angular momentum at takeoff in six types of jumps in women's figure skating.

INTRODUCTION: In figure skating, various types of multirotational jumps are becoming increasingly important. Based on mechanical considerations, the angular momentum of the entire body at takeoff can increase the number of rotations in the air. This study aimed to compare and characterize the angular momentum of the entire body and each body part during six different jumps. METHODS: Seven female figure skaters performed six double jumps on the ice. The positions of the markers, which were attached to anatomical landmarks, were recorded using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. The ang

Lower limb biomechanical differences between jumps with different number of rotations in youth figure skaters.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the lower-limb muscle activities and kinematics between figure skating Axel type jumps with different number of rotations in youth figure skaters. We hypothesized that skaters would exhibit increased lower limb flexion during jump propulsion phase, lower limb extension at take-off and greater muscle activation levels as jump rotation increases. METHODS: Eleven youth figure skaters (age: 12 ± 4.29 years; height: 146.82 ± 17.71 cm; body mass: 37.02 ± 14.47 kg) performed Waltz Jump (0.5 rotations), Single Axel Jump (1.5 rotat

Association Between Balance and Hip Muscle Strength in Inline Skaters.

Background: Inline skating has rapidly grown in popularity. Early research primarily focused on injury patterns and protective measures. However, its biomechanical similarity to other skating modalities enables the synthesis of existing evidence, emphasizing key physical attributes essential for performance, namely, balance and the strength of the hip adductor and abductor muscles. The interaction between these muscle groups in relation to balance has not yet been examined in inline skaters. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between single-leg static balance and the isometric st

Effects of fractional inspired O2 on the O2 pathway during submaximal and maximal exercise in male endurance athletes.

We utilized non-invasive methods and novel computational approaches to examine the effects of acutely varying fractional inspired O2 (FIO2) on convective and diffusive steps of O2 transport and muscle tissue (de)oxygenation during incremental cycling to exhaustion in 10 Tier 3 and 4 endurance athletes breathing either 0.152, 0.209, or 0.298 FIO2. At submaximal work rates (100-275 W) in hypoxia, higher cardiac output compensated for lower arterial O2 content. At maximal work rate, convective O2 transport was lower in hypoxia (mean [95%CI]: 5.37 [5.14-5.59] L/min, q < 0.0001) and higher in hyper
