Vibration exposure uncovers a critical early developmental window for zebrafish caudal fin development.

Mechanical influencers have long been shown to affect mature bone. Bone mechanosensation is a key feature that allows the skeleton to adapt to environmental constraints. In this study, we describe the response of immature, developing bones to a mechanical stimulus. To do so, zebrafish larvae at different stages of development were exposed to whole-body vibration (WBV) at a low frequency of 20 Hz, for up to 4 days. Whole mount Alizarin red and Alcian blue staining revealed age-related and bone type-specific defects. Specifically, the parhypural and hypural 1 caudal fin endoskeletal elements wer

An agent-based model of vibration-induced intimal hyperplasia.

Acute exposure to hand-arm transmitted vibrations (HAVs) may decrease the wall shear stress (WSS) exerted by the blood flow on the arterial endothelium. In the case of chronic exposure to HAVs, these WSS changes can lead to arterial growth and remodeling potentially induced by an intimal hyperplasia phenomenon. Accordingly, we implemented an agent-based model (ABM) that captures the hemodynamics-driven and mechanoregulated cellular mechanisms involved in vibration-induced intimal hyperplasia. Our ABM was combined with flow loop experiments that investigated the WSS-modulated secretion of the p

Magnetically Levitated Flexible Vibration Sensors with Surficial Micropyramid Arrays for Magnetism Enhancement.

Magnetically levitated vibration sensors possess wide frequency response ranges and high sensitivity. Compared with springs and cantilevers, the levitated magnet suffers no mechanical abrasion, allowing minimized mechanical fatigue after prolonged exposure to vibration. However, magnetic levitated sensors are mostly based on fully rigid components, which are difficult to match the soft and curvilinear surface of the biological tissues and machines. Here, an innovative vibration sensor based on magnetic levitation has been developed. The proposed sensor contains two parallel magnetic membranes,

Stability Study of mRNA-Lipid Nanoparticles Exposed to Various Conditions Based on the Evaluation between Physicochemical Properties and Their Relation with Protein Expression Ability.

Lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) are currently in the spotlight as delivery systems for mRNA therapeutics and have been used in the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. mRNA-LNP formulations have been indicated to require strict control, including maintenance at fairly low temperatures during their transport and storage. Since it is a new pharmaceutical modality, there is a lack of information on the systematic investigation of how storage and handling conditions affect the physicochemical properties of mRNA-LNPs and their protein expression ability. In this study, using the mRNA-LNPs with

Prediction of Work-Related Risk Factors among Bus Drivers Using Machine Learning.

A recent development in ergonomics research is using machine learning techniques for risk assessment and injury prevention. Bus drivers are more likely than other workers to suffer musculoskeletal diseases because of the nature of their jobs and their working conditions (WMSDs). The basic idea of this study is to forecast important work-related risk variables linked to WMSDs in bus drivers using machine learning approaches. A total of 400 full-time male bus drivers from the east and west zone depots of Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), which is based in Bengaluru, south Indi

Biodynamic responses of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis exposed to vibration.

Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis suffer severe health issues. The unclear dynamic biomechanical characteristics of scoliosis were needed to be explored to improve the prevention and treatment in clinics. Validated 3D finite element (FE) models of thoracolumbosacral spine (T1-S1) both with and without scoliosis were developed from computed tomography (CT) images. Modal and harmonic analyses were performed to investigate the biomechanical responses of the spinal models to vibration. Resonant frequencies of the scoliotic model were lower than those of the model without scoliosis. Pea

Investigation of hand muscle fatigue and its influential factors in manual tasks.

Muscle fatigue (MF) can lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the long term; however, it can be managed if the causes are well known. This study aimed to examine the grip force (GF) and grip fatigue (GFa) of employees with light, moderate and heavy manual tasks using a dynamometer and find their possible relationship with other factors. The nature of heavy manual tasks led to more experience of GFa and GF of the right hand. Moreover, the equal need for both hands in occupations with light and moderate manual tasks is the reason for more GFa in the left hand. In this primary study, the he

Vibration Suppression of a Composite Prosthetic Foot Using Piezoelectric Shunt Damping: Implications to Vibration-Induced Cumulative Trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Energy-storage-and-return (ESAR) prosthetic feet have improved amputee mobility due to their efficient conversion of strain energy to mechanical work. However, this efficiency is typically achieved using light-weight, high-stiffness materials, which generate high-frequency vibrations that are potentially injurious if transmitted to biological tissues. To reduce the vibration which may cause cumulative tissue trauma, high-frequency vibration suppression by piezoelectric shunt damping patches on a commercial ESAR foot was evaluated. METHODS: Two patches with either passive or active

Power Absorbed by the Standing Human Body During Whole-Body Vibration Training.

Absorbed power (AP) is a biodynamic response that is directly related to the magnitude and duration of vibration. No work has previously investigated the power absorbed by the standing human body during the exposure to vibration training conditions or otherwise. This article reports the power absorbed by the standing human body under whole-body vibration (WBV) training conditions. In this work, the force and acceleration used to calculate the apparent mass by Nawayseh and Hamdan (2019, "Apparent Mass of the Standing Human Body When Using a Whole-Body Vibration Training Machine: Effect of Knee
