The effects of physical vibration on heart rate variability as a measure of drowsiness.

UNLABELLED: We investigated the effects of low frequency whole body vibration on heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of autonomic nervous system activation that differentiates between stress and drowsiness. Fifteen participants underwent two simulated driving tasks for 60 min each: one involved whole-body 4-7 Hz vibration delivered through the car seat, and one involved no vibration. The Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), a subjective measure of drowsiness, demonstrated a significant increase in drowsiness during the task. Within 15-30 min of exposure to vibration, autonomic (sympathetic)

Pathway Analysis Hints Towards Beneficial Effects of Long-Term Vibration on Human Chondrocytes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Spaceflight negatively influences the function of cartilage tissue in vivo. In vitro human chondrocytes exhibit an altered gene expression of inflammation markers after a two-hour exposure to vibration. Little is known about the impact of long-term vibration on chondrocytes. METHODS: Human cartilage cells were exposed for up to 24 h (VIB) on a specialised vibration platform (Vibraplex) simulating the vibration profile which occurs during parabolic flights and compared to static control conditions (CON). Afterwards, they were investigated by phase-contrast microscopy, rhodamin

Vibration-induced Behavioral Responses and Response Threshold in Female C57BL/6 Mice.

Despite documented adverse effects, limits for rodent exposure to vibration in the laboratory animal facility have not been established. This study used female C57BL/6 mice to determine the frequencies of vibration at which mice were most sensitive to behavioral changes, the highest magnitude of vibration that would not cause behavioral changes, the behavioral changes that occur in response to vibration, and the extent to which mice habituate to vibration. Mice were exposed to frequencies of vibration between 20 and 190 Hz at accelerations of 0.05 to 1.0 m/s2. Behavioral responses were videore

Vibrotactile and thermal perception and its relation to finger skin thickness.

OBJECTIVE: Quantitative measurements of vibrotactile and thermotactile perception thresholds (VPT and TPT, respectively) rely on responses from sensory receptors in the skin when mechanical or thermal stimuli are applied to the skin. The objective was to examine if there is a relation between skin thickness (epidermis and dermis) and VPT or TPT. METHODS: Perception thresholds were measured on the volar side of the fingertip on 148 male subjects, out of which 116 were manual workers exposed to hand-transmitted vibration and 32 were white-collar (office) workers. Skin thickness was measured usi

Acute Vibration Induces Peripheral Nerve Sensitization in a Rat Tail Model: Possible Role of Oxidative Stress and Inflammation.

Prolonged occupational exposure to hand-held vibrating tools leads to pain and reductions in tactile sensitivity, grip strength and manual dexterity. The goal of the current study was to use a rat-tail vibration model to determine how vibration frequency influences factors related to nerve injury and dysfunction. Rats were exposed to restraint, or restraint plus tail vibration at 62.5 Hz or 250 Hz. Nerve function was assessed using the current perception threshold (CPT) test. Exposure to vibration at 62.5 and 250 Hz, resulted in a reduction in the CPT at 2000 and 250-Hz electrical stimulation

Health effects associated with occupational exposure to hand-arm or whole body vibration.

Workers in a number of different occupational sectors are exposed to workplace vibration on a daily basis. This exposure may arise through the use of powered-hand tools or hand-transmitted vibration (HTV). Workers might also be exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) by driving delivery vehicles, earth moving equipment, or through use of tools that generate vibration at low dominant frequencies and high amplitudes, such as jackhammers. Occupational exposure to vibration has been associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal pain in the back, neck, hands, shoulders, and hips. Occupational

An Active Suspension System for Mitigating Motion Sickness and Enabling Reading in a Car.

INTRODUCTION: The advent of autonomous automobiles raises new challenges for maintaining passenger safety and comfort. The challenge addressed here is how to predict and mitigate motion sickness when passengers read in a moving vehicle. METHODS: We utilized a car equipped with a commercial active suspension system developed for attenuating the transmission of road surface fluctuations to passengers. The system was used to reproduce, in a parked car, either the vibrations that would be experienced in a moving car equipped with a conventional suspension system (unmitigated ride) or the attenuat

The prevalence and associated factors of symptomatic cervical Spondylosis in Chinese adults: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spondylosis adversely affects life quality for its heavy disease burden. The report on the community-based prevalence and associated factors of cervical spondylosis is rare, especially in Chinese population. Whether prevention is needed and how to prevent it is not clear. This study aims to explore its prevalence and related lifestyle factors and provide evidence on prevention of cervical spondylosis. METHODS: A community-based multistage cross-sectional survey of six communities from the Chinese population was conducted. A face-to-face interview was conducted to obtain i

Long Term Oncological Results of Transoral Laser Microsurgery for Early and Moderately Advanced Glottic Carcinoma in Primary and Salvage Settings.

A 99-year-old woman was admitted to Shizuoka Shimizu Municipal Hospital because of fever and anasarca. Imaging and laboratory tests showed pneumonia, urinary tract infection, and cardiac failure. The patient died 20 days after admission. An autopsy revealed marked diffuse dilations of the biliary tree ranging from the lower common bile duct to intrahepatic bile ducts. Intrahepatic calcium bilirubinate stones and biliary sludges were recognized within the dilated bile ducts. A unilocular cyst (2 cm in diameter) was present in the pancreatic head adjacent to the lower common bile duct, and it ap

Effects of vibration on occupant driving performance under simulated driving conditions.

Although much research has been devoted to the characterization of the effects of whole-body vibration on seated occupants' comfort, drowsiness induced by vibration has received less attention to date. There are also little validated measurement methods available to quantify whole body vibration-induced drowsiness. Here, the effects of vibration on drowsiness were investigated. Twenty male volunteers were recruited for this experiment. Drowsiness was measured in a driving simulator, before and after 30-min exposure to vibration. Gaussian random vibration, with 1-15 Hz frequency bandwidth was u

Congenital hyperinsulinism (HI) is characterized by profound hypoglycemia caused by inappropriate insulin secretion. HI is a heterogeneous disorder with at least two histologic lesions and several implicated genes. If HI is caused by a focal lesion, elective surgery is the treatment of choice because it leads to complete recovery without diabetes. On the contrary, near-total pancreatectomy though recommended for diffuse HI, long-term risks of endocrine and exocrine deficiencies are present. Between the years 2006-2011, three patients of HI were referred to and operated by a single surgeon. The

Acute exposure to vibration is an apoptosis-inducing stimulus in the vocal fold epithelium.

Clinical voice disorders pose significant communication-related challenges to patients. The purpose of this study was to quantify the rate of apoptosis and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) signaling in vocal fold epithelial cells in response to increasing time-doses and cycle-doses of vibration. 20 New Zealand white breeder rabbits were randomized to three groups of time-doses of vibration exposure (30, 60, 120min) or a control group (120min of vocal fold adduction and abduction). Estimated cycle-doses of vocal fold vibration were extrapolated based on mean fundamental frequency. Laryngeal
