We report the first confirmed case of a human being bitten by the parasitic forest fly Hippobosca equina (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) Linnaeus, in Slovakia. The incident involved atypically aggressive behaviour of the fly toward the human host and suggests a potentially underestimated health risk for humans. A single specimen of H. equina responsible for the bite was identified and subjected to molecular analyses to assess the presence of zoonotic pathogens. DNA of Bartonella schoenbuchensis (Hyphomicrobiales: Bartonellaceae) Dehio et al. was detected in the collected specimen. This case demonstra

Tail biting compromises the welfare and performance of pigs. Understanding the dynamics of this behavior is essential for developing management strategies to minimize outbreaks. We used social network analysis (SNA) to evaluate the effect of group size on tail-biting interactions among pigs and to examine differences in tail-biting network position between barrows and gilts and biters and non-biters. Pigs (n = 315, initial weight = 22.1 ± 3.76 kg) with intact tails of mixed sexes were housed in small (9 pigs/pen) or large (18 pigs/pen) pens on slatted floors for 14 wk until market weight (120.

Triatomine bugs are blood feeding insects that transmit the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease. The bugs are found primarily in the Americas with a few species in Asia and Africa. Here we report the first case of a live triatomine bug in Europe, found in a Lisbon hotel room. In August, 2025, the hotel room occupants discovered a triatomine bug perched on the headboard of their bed. Upon capture, bright red blood emerged from the bug; the occupants suspected that it had bitten them during the night. The bug was identified morphologically as triatomine species Hospesne

Due to the rarity of bites and reported literature, the clinical manifestations of envenoming by species of Micrurus are poorly represented compared to envenomings by viperid species. A biologist was bitten on the hand by a specimen of Micrurus annellatus while removing a hammock from a drawstring bag in the Amazon rainforest of Peru. The subsequent evacuation, symptom progression, and recovery were recorded in detail by the victim and those involved in the evacuation. We report the details of this case, expand on the known symptoms resulting from a bite by M. annellatus, and review the associ

BACKGROUND: The rise in tick anaphylaxis (TA) in Australia and worldwide underscores the need for effective tick bite prevention and management strategies.
OBJECTIVES: This retrospective survey of a clinical TA cohort aimed to determine prevention and management strategies employed by patients who had received education following diagnosis of TA and identify areas for improvement in patient education.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with TA by a consultant immunologist between 2005 and 2021 in NSW, Australia, completed a survey in 2021 assessing tick bite recurrence, life stage identification, r

BACKGROUND: Sand flies are vectors of various pathogens, primarily Leishmania and phleboviruses. The effectiveness of disease control strategies can be assessed using serological tests that measures antibodies against sand fly saliva as a marker of host exposure and a proxy biomarker of sand fly-borne pathogens transmission. Recently, we proposed novel recombinant salivary proteins to evaluate exposure of dogs to Phlebotomus tobbi and P. papatasi. The aim of this study was to test vector and host specificity of these recombinant proteins.
METHODS: Recombinant salivary proteins of P. papatasi

Predation and its risk influence the ecology and evolution of both predator and prey species. Despite this, predatory attempts of large apex sharks on cetaceans often remain unobserved, constraining empirical assessments of their frequency and ecological significance. Shark bite scars can be used as an indirect measure to quantify predation risk on dolphins and may reveal species-specific and spatial patterns of predator-prey interactions. Here, we analysed photographs of coastal dolphins in southeast Queensland, Australia to compare predation risk between multiple dolphin species across diffe

Snakebite envenomation remains a significant yet often overlooked health challenge in Nepal, particularly in its rural and hilly regions. While venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC) is commonly observed with viper bites, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) is an extremely rare complication, especially with green pit vipers (Trimeresurus spp.). MAHA is often underdiagnosed in low-resource settings due to the absence of definitive laboratory diagnostics. We report a case of a 47-year-old woman from rural Nepal who was bitten by a presumed green pit viper (Trimeresurus spp.). She dev

Parasite exposure without infection can lead to risk-induced trait responses with potential costs to host fitness or non-consumptive effects (NCEs). The various ways in which NCEs can manifest has gained considerable research attention, but the NCEs of parasite exposure on host mating behaviour remain unknown. Using a host-parasite system involving cactophilic flies (Drosophila nigrospiracula) and ectoparasitic mites (Macrocheles subbadius), we investigated the effects of current and prior parasite exposure (sans infection) on host mating behaviour. Current exposure did not influence host mati

BACKGROUND: Ticks are one of the most important vectors of infectious disease pathogens in Europe, posing threats to human health. However, human exposure to tick bites and associated factors remains poorly documented, despite its importance to better mitigate the risk of tick-borne diseases. Current participatory datasets report information from individuals being bitten by ticks, while information on exposed but non-bitten individuals is scarce. Here, by collecting data on exposed individuals from a nationwide participatory surveillance cohort in France, we assessed the risk of self-reporting

BackgroundChildren are at a high risk for dog bite injuries with approximately 100 000 pediatric victims annually. Anatomical factors, including proportionally larger heads and compliant tissues, make children vulnerable to severe head and torso injuries.MethodsA single center retrospective cohort study was performed including all patients with a mechanism of "dog bite" from 2016-2024. Demographics, injury patterns, surgical interventions, canine characteristics, and mortality were obtained. Patients were stratified into pediatric (<18 years old) and adult (≥18 years old) groups and a bivariat

Animals have evolved escape behaviors to survive. Freshwater planarians have many predators, including conspecifics in cannibalistic species such as Dugesia japonica. When agitated, planarians escape via a locomotory behavior called "scrunching", whereby the planarian periodically elongates and contracts its whole body. Current understanding is that planarians move forward when they scrunch. However, when transversely cutting D. japonica, we observed that while head pieces scrunched forward, tail pieces scrunched backward instead. Previous work has shown that forward scrunching is a conserved

In order to enable accurate and efficient rice quality evaluation through full-surface defect detection of brown rice, a detection system based on convolutional neural network (CNN) was developed. A dataset of images of five categories-unhulled, normal, broken, cracked, and insect-bitten brown rice-was collected. Three CNN models, YOLOv5s, YOLOv7, and Faster R-CNN, were evaluated and compared with traditional algorithms including support vector machine (SVM) and back propagation (BP) neural networks. Experimental results showed that CNN-based methods in the present database significantly outpe

Tail biting affects the health and welfare of pigs, the quality of pig carcasses, and the profitability of production in both weaner and finishing pig production. There are specific quality criteria for weaned pigs, and tail damage can lead to a reductions in the purchase price of weaner pigs as well as to carcass rejections at the slaughterhouse. Although this issue is important, research has paid little attention to tail biting in weaner pig production. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of various motivational factors and economic incentives on the management of tail biting o

The development of the taipan antivenom in Australia is a unique story, centred in Far North Queensland. It is infused with idealism and heroism. The taipan is one of the world's deadliest snakes. A live specimen of the coastal taipan was not captured until 1950, and the antivenom only became available in 1955. Until then a bite from the coastal taipan was universally fatal. Kevin Budden a snake enthusiast was bitten in the process of capturing the specimen. Budden extracted a promise from those around him that the snake would not be killed but be sent to the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in

We compared proprioceptive judgements made within a single frame of reference (e.g., grasp → grasp; i.e., low-level) and those made between frames of reference (e.g., grasp → vision; i.e., high-level) at the hand and jaw in 30 healthy participants. Participants judged the size of grasped or bitten objects of different sizes. Compared to high-level judgements, low-level judgements were more accurate (hand: mean difference in mean absolute error: 0.20 mm [95% CI 0.12 to 0.27]; jaw: (0.15 mm [0.09 to 0.20]) and precise (hand: mean difference in RMSE: 3.94 [2.73 to 5.15]; jaw: 1.67 [1.19 to 2.14])

AIM: The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with dog-related injuries by analysing data collected from 5908 patients seeking treatment at healthcare facilities in Skaraborg district, Sweden, over the years 2001-2016.
METHODS: To describe factors associated with dog-related injuries, we analysed variables from four categories: people, that is, characteristics (gender and ages) of the patients who were injured; the circumstances in which the injuries occurred; the causes and types of injuries caused by dogs (injury mechanisms); and whether the injuries resulted in hospitalisat
