Neural coordination of wing and leg movements during a terrestrial threat display.

In most flying species, legs and wings mediate earthbound vs. aerial locomotion, respectively. During terrestrial social displays such as threat or courtship, however, species-typical movements of these appendages are coordinated in a stereotyped manner. How such appendicular control is integrated is poorly understood. Threat behavior in Drosophila consists of four types of leg and wing actions, which can be performed singly or in combination. Using a large-scale functional screen, we previously identified a cluster of 4-5 AIP (CL062) neurons whose optogenetic activation can evoke all threat a

Motor abstraction training generalizes to the refinement of specific movement patterns.

The ability to abstract the invariant structure of an experience while discarding incidental details underlies generalization across virtually every domain of human cognition, from vision and language to concept learning. Yet whether the motor system generates such abstractions and whether they causally contribute to skilled performance remain open questions. Here we introduce a paradigm in which human participants learned novel movement patterns by precisely copying unfamiliar handwritten characters. To examine the role of motor abstractions in this form of learning, participants were trained

Movement regimens drive region-specific humeral adaptation: whole-bone insights from an experimental animal model.

Repetitive movements impose distinct loading regimens on long bones, potentially eliciting predictable osteogenic responses and morphological change. Cortical responses to such movements are seldom investigated along whole diaphyses as opposed to selected locations. Morphometric mapping is a technique that is well-suited for comprehensively examining whole diaphyses. To assess responses to different movement regimens, we evaluated humeri of thirty-five female C57BL/6J mice raised from weeks 4 to 20 post-birth in one of three scenarios: linear-dominated (n = 12), turning-dominated (n = 12), and

Using a smart compression sleeve to measure ergonomic risk in automotive manufacturing.

BackgroundWork-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are a significant concern in industrial settings, where repetitive and awkward movements contribute to ergonomic risk. Quantifying this risk allows for a better understanding of operator movement patterns and potential adjustments that can aid in injury risk mitigation.ObjectiveTraditional observational methods, specifically the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), provide ergonomic risk assessments but are limited by observer subjectivity and an inability to calculate movement durations. With wearable technology, precise kinematic and te

Prematurity insults remodel cerebellar development and behaviour.

Preterm survivors often develop motor and socio-cognitive impairments that implicate altered cerebellar development, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. A key challenge is that prematurity involves overlapping perinatal insults that converge on the developing brain, making their individual effects difficult to disentangle. Here, we model two major prematurity-associated insults, maternal immune activation (MIA) and neonatal hypoxia (Hx), in mice. By controlling timing and sequence, we define how these insults shape cerebellar assembly during rapid maturation. Comparative an

Investigating fatigability and cortical activation during prolonged foot tapping in multiple sclerosis.

People with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) often exhibit motor fatigability and reduced foot-tapping ability. However, the coupling between performance and cortical activity during fast, repetitive and prolonged ankle movements remains unexplored. We aimed to investigate the neural correlates of a prolonged foot-tap task (FTT) in pwMS and healthy controls (HC). Thirty-nine pwMS (EDSS 4[3.5], 55[14] years) and 18 HC (54.5[9.75) years) performed one 1-minute FTT for each foot. Wearable sensors and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) quantified motor performance and cortical activity, respec

Pancreatic hamartoma presenting with sleep-related behavioral abnormalities due to neuroglycopenia: a case report.

Pancreatic hamartoma (PH) is an exceedingly rare benign non-neoplastic lesion of the pancreas. Owing to its nonspecific clinical and radiological features, it is prone to misdiagnosis. Among its various subtypes, functionally active pancreatic hamartomas with distinct endocrine activity have only been sporadically reported in the literature as individual cases. We report the case of a 58-year-old female patient whose initial presentation was characterized by paroxysmal behavioral abnormalities during nocturnal sleep, manifesting as sudden agitation, arm-flinging, and purposeless stereotyped mo

Temporal association between adjunctive repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and seizure reduction in a pediatric patient with DNM1L-associated EMPF1: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Encephalopathy, lethal, due to defective mitochondrial and peroxisomal fission 1 (EMPF1) is a rare, severe mitochondrial disorder characterized by acute-onset refractory seizures that rapidly progress to status epilepticus and are associated with a poor prognosis. Conventional therapies, including antiepileptic drugs and the ketogenic diet, exhibit limited efficacy. Although repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown promise in other forms of drug-resistant epilepsy, its potential role in managing EMPF1 remains unexplored. Feeding Young Children in Food Insecure Environments: A Photovoice Study in Kenya's Drylands.

Child wasting remains a global public health challenge, with persistently high levels in dryland regions such as Turkana and Samburu Counties in Kenya. Food scarcity is linked to spikes in wasting prevalence in these counties, but little is known about women's lived experiences of food insecurity and how they perceive its relationship to child wasting. A total of 126 women across diverse livelihood zones in Turkana and Samburu Counties participated in a photovoice activity as part of the Nawiri mixed-methods longitudinal study. The women took photos based on four prompts related to food securi

Implications of hierarchical Markov models of behavior: on irreversibility, predictability, and dimensionality.

The maturation of quantitative tools for studying the high-level structure of animal behavior, and especially tools which represent spontaneous behavior as a sequence of stereotyped and neurally well-defined 'syllables', demands that the field revisit a fundamental theoretical question: if the coarse structure of behavior can be accurately described by Markov models, what do these models really tell us about behavior? In this work, we explore the theoretical implications of these models and discuss how they allow us to quantitatively formulate questions about the sequence-like nature and effec

Dissecting Larval Zebrafish Hunting using Deep Reinforcement Learning Trained RNN Agents.

Larval zebrafish hunting provides a tractable setting to study how ecological and energetic constraints shape adaptive behavior in both biological brains and artificial agents. Here we develop a minimal agent-based model, training recurrent policies with deep reinforcement learning in a bout-based zebrafish simulator. Despite its simplicity, the model reproduces hallmark hunting behaviors-including eye vergence-linked pursuit, speed modulation, and stereotyped approach trajectories-that closely match real larval zebrafish. Quantitative trajectory analyses show that pursuit bouts systematically

Genetic risk for dystonia reprograms host-microbiome interactions and gut-brain communication.

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary, sustained, or intermittent muscle contractions that result in twisting movements, repetitive motor patterns, or abnormal postures. While genetic mutations such as TOR1A+/∆GAG are known contributors, the environmental and peripheral factors influencing disease onset and progression remain poorly understood. Emerging evidence implicates the gut microbiome in shaping neurodevelopment and host behavioral function, yet its contribution to dystonia pathobiology is largely unexplored. Here, we longitudinally profiled the gut m
