The Relationship Between Spousal Support and Nurse Burnout: A Parallel Dual-Mediator Model of Work-Family Conflict and Work-Family Facilitation.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether work-family conflict (WFC) and work-family facilitation (WFF) act as parallel statistical mediators in the association between spousal support (SS) and burnout among nurses. BACKGROUND: Nurse burnout represents a substantial management challenge, contributing to high staff turnover and diminished quality of patient care. SS is a potentially important protective resource for mitigating burnout. Nevertheless, the mechanisms through which SS influences nurse burnout, particularly via positive work-family spillover, remain understudied within nursing populations. ME

Conspecific social competence in domestic dogs: a theoretical framework for practitioners.

Conspecific social competence - the capacity of domestic dogs to engage in contextually appropriate interactions with other dogs - is a clinically significant yet systematically underaddressed construct in canine behavioural science. Existing approaches to reactivity and fear-based behaviour reduce problematic responses effectively, but are oriented toward managing conspecific exposure rather than developing genuine communicative and regulatory competence, and no framework currently exists for developing these capacities in adult dogs who have passed the early socialisation window. This paper

Whole person health in epilepsy: prioritizing care-partner wellbeing.

The experiences of care-partners of people with epilepsy are complex and dynamic throughout the lifespan, yet their wellbeing remains insufficiently recognized within care systems. There is a public health need to examine and address the wellbeing of epilepsy care-partners. Utilizing the National Institute of Health (NIH) Whole Person Health framework, we present a narrative synthesis of often-overlooked challenges faced by epilepsy care-partners, along with potential strategies for improving their identification, measurement, support and advocacy. These considerations are essential to advanci

The long-term and spillover effects of a radio drama on HIV knowledge, expressed stigma, willingness to disclose, and political priorities: Evidence from a cluster-randomized trial in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Entertainment-education can influence public health knowledge and attitudes, but evidence on persistence and spillovers is limited. METHODS: We conducted a placebo-controlled, cluster-randomized trial in 30 villages in rural Tanzania. Within 15 matched ward pairs, we randomly assigned villages to a community screening of a radio drama modeling HIV disclosure and obtaining treatment or to a screening of an unrelated drama. Of 1205 respondents enrolled at baseline, 87% attended the screening and 97% completed the endline survey. Participants and enumerators were blinded to assignmen

Unpacking behavioral and organizational enablers of blockchain adoption: A hybrid PLS-ANN-fsQCA investigation.

Blockchain technology has ushered as a transformative force, offering enhanced transparency, security and traceability across supply chains. Despite its potential, blockchain adoption in supply chain finance remains limited. This study integrates the Technology-Organization-Environment framework with key constructs from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology to identify behavioral drivers of blockchain adoption. It captures technological, organizational, and environmental influences alongside individual beliefs related to usefulness and ease of use, offering a multi-dimensional

In vivo Gene Writing with engineered retrotransposons.

Efficient integration of gene-length cargos in vivo remains challenging. Non-long terminal repeat (non-LTR) retrotransposons, which naturally mobilize large DNA segments through an RNA intermediate, could potentially address these limitations. Here, we developed a computational pipeline to systematically identify a diverse set of non-LTR retrotransposons. Extensive engineering generated elements capable of the efficient and stable insertion of reporter genes in human cells using RNA templates introduced in trans, which we term Gene Writers. Gene Writers successfully generated CD19 and CD20 chi

De novo design of enantioselective artificial metalloenzyme photocatalysts.

The ability to create protein scaffolds that impart enantioselectivity to simple, readily available metal catalysts could redefine the landscape of asymmetric catalysis. Artificial metalloenzymes (ArMs), hybrid catalysts that combine a synthetic metal cofactor with a protein scaffold, offer a potential means to achieve this goal, but scaffold discovery has remained constrained by trial-and-error approaches and the functional limits of extant proteins.1-5 This challenge is acute for metal polypyridine photocatalysts, which are widely used in visible-light chemistry but have not enabled highly e

The clinical laboratory as a missing stakeholder in Japan's program medical device (SaMD) framework: regulation, two-step approval, and the analytical-validation bridge.

INTRODUCTION: Japan has built one of the most explicit national pathways for Software as a Medical Device (SaMD), known domestically as program medical devices. Under the DASH for SaMD strategy, a dedicated review office, a single consultation window, two-step (conditional early) approval, real-world-data provisions, and widening reimbursement of digital therapeutics have accelerated market access. Yet the clinical laboratory is almost never named as a stakeholder. AREAS COVERED: We examine three structural dependencies of the framework on the clinical laboratory: as the provider of input dat

Peer Bullying Victimisation in Adolescence and Intimate Partner Violence Victimisation in Young Adulthood: Protective Factors Against Revictimisation Among Women in Australia.

This study examines whether adolescent bullying victimisation is a precursor to adult intimate partner violence victimisation and, if so, whether specific individual, family, and peer/school factors protect against this form of revictimisation. Nationally representative Australian data showed that women bullied during adolescence (aged 14-15) had 1.87 times higher odds of being victimised by an intimate partner (aged 18-19). Additionally, an adjusted logistical regression revealed that school belonging decreased the odds of revictimisation. Overall, this study shows that there is a relationshi

Informal Caregiver-Observed Fall Risk Indicators and Caregiver Responses to Prevent Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older People: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Informal caregivers are uniquely positioned to recognize subtle changes that precede falls because of their continuous presence in older people's everyday environments. However, caregiver-observed indicators of escalating fall risk have not been systematically synthesized. This systematic review synthesizes the evidence on informal caregiver-observed fall risk indicators and caregiver responses to prevent falls among community-dwelling older people. METHODS: A targeted synthesis of peer-reviewed literature was undertaken using six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, We

Structural Ableism in Dentistry.

OBJECTIVES: Ableism is a system of beliefs, norms and practices that privileges non-disabled bodies and minds while devaluing and disadvantaging disabled people. Disabled people experience persistent oral health inequalities, yet dentistry has largely framed disability as an individual clinical challenge rather than a structural question. In this critical commentary, we apply a structural ableism framework to dentistry and examine how dental education, research, policy and service delivery reproduce normative assumptions about bodies, communication, behaviour and eligibility for care. METHOD:

Cultural Authority and Food Choices: How Intergenerational Power Shapes Maternal Diet in Rural South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Maternal malnutrition remains a persistent public health challenge in South Africa, affecting both maternal and child health outcomes. Dietary practices during pregnancy and lactation are shaped by complex social dynamics that extend beyond individual choice. OBJECTIVES: This study explored maternal dietary practices during pregnancy, defined as the foods women reported consuming, avoiding, substituting, or concealing, and examined how cultural norms and intergenerational power relations influenced these practices within the context of routine antenatal nutrition counseling. Development of a family functioning measure for Hispanic lesbian, gay, and bisexual adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Hispanic lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adolescents experience elevated risks for HIV-related risk behaviors, drug use, and mental-health problems. These problems may be impacted by various family functioning behaviors (e.g., communication, parental involvement). However, existing family functioning measures may not adequately capture the culturally shaped, identity-specific family processes relevant to this population. Thus, we iteratively developed a user-informed measure of family functioning for Hispanic LGB adolescents. METHODS: The study was conducted across phases from

How to Institutionalize and Individualize Educational Programs to Prevent Violence.

We need to build broader, comprehensive and well-established curricula incorporating violence prevention along with other life skills, prevention practices, health information, character building and decision-making. We might be able to take advantage of the curricular revolution that is likely to arrive soon. This revolution will be from the greater deployment of artificial intelligence to personalize the learning process. Strategies are needed to overcome the obstacles to the collaborations required to create these comprehensive curricula. Evaluations are needed of these comprehensive approa

An edible invitation: Recruiting beneficial fungi through what they eat.

Orchid seeds cannot germinate without help from fungi. This commentary features a recent study showing that Cremastra appendiculata seeds release two small compounds that attract a helpful fungus and also serve as food for it. This suggests that plants may recruit fungal partners before contact by offering edible chemical cues to nearby fungi.

Microsolvation Controls Ultrafast Relaxation Pathways in Hydrated Pyridine.

Hydration critically reshapes ultrafast electronic relaxation in biorelevant molecules, yet its mechanistic role remains poorly understood. Here, we investigate intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) following medium-energy (E0 = 103 eV) electron impact ionization of hydrated pyridine, a prototypical nucleobase analogue. Combining multiparticle momentum coincidence spectroscopy with high-level electronic structure calculations, we identify water-initiated ICD and find evidence consistent with an additional pyridine-initiated ICD pathway, in which inner-valence ionization leads to ionization of t

Not just what is taught, but how it is lived: socially accountable education in health professions education.

Social accountability (SA) is a defining institutional mandate in health professions education (HPE), yet how educational approaches associated with SA are experienced in practice remains insufficiently understood. Rather than examining what these approaches aim to achieve, this study explores how they are encountered, interpreted, and made meaningful by those directly involved. We conducted an interpretive descriptive study using rich picture interviews combined with semi-structured interviews with 46 participants, including learners, clinical teachers, community organization members, patient
