Beyond What Is Said: Generic Language in Parent-Child Conversations and Children's Racial Bias.

Growing up in the United States means developing within a context shaped by structural racism. There is, however, substantial variation in how families talk (or do not talk) about it. The present study examined naturalistic parent-child conversations about social inequality and race. Conversations were collected remotely from 124 children (ages 4-8; 16% Asian, 20% Black, 13% multiracial, 14% Latine, 35% white, 2% unspecified; 57% female, 42% male, 1% other) and their parents from across the United States. When explicitly prompted to discuss race, families from different racial backgrounds addr

Reasoning Beyond Explicit Rules: Adults' and Children's Use of Closure Principles in Novel Cases.

Learners often encounter situations where explicit rules fail to account for novel cases, leading to an underdetermination problem. One way to explore how learners navigate this uncertainty is to see if their inferences align with closure principles, through which a learner assumes that anything not explicitly prohibited is permitted, and anything not explicitly permitted is prohibited. Beyond permission and prohibition, normative inferences must also be made from and about a learner's obligations-not only what they can do, but what they must do. Contrary to adult learners, young children may

Population genomics reveals gene flow and positive selection patterns in the wine-related yeast Hanseniaspora uvarum.

Hanseniaspora uvarum is a representative non-Saccharomyces species that plays a significant role in fermentation processes such as winemaking. In recent years, this species has gained attention in food engineering and evolutionary biology. However, the population genomic signatures in this species remain poorly understood. In this study, a population genomics analysis was conducted on 151 H. uvarum strains (45 from Ningxia, China; 21 from other regions of China; 67 from Australia; and 18 from other regions or of unspecified origin), and a pangenome analysis was performed on 159 strains, incorp

The Influence of Considering Others' Emotions on Children's Resource Distribution.

Understanding how one's actions affect others' emotions is an important aspect of prosocial development. Extending prior findings with adults, this study investigated whether predicting future emotional messages from the recipient could enhance preschoolers' altruistic sharing. In Experiment 1, 4- to 6-year-old Korean children played a dictator game in which they allocated stickers between themselves and a monkey puppet. The children in the experimental condition were informed that the monkey would draw a picture of how he felt about the number of stickers received, while those in the control

Self-Pay Prices and Financial Assistance Programs for Urology Appointments.

IMPORTANCE: For uninsured or out-of-network patients, uncertainty regarding the expected prices for urology appointments presents a meaningful barrier to timely evaluation. Although price variation for hospital-based services is well documented, self-pay price information in the ambulatory urology setting remains uncharacterized. OBJECTIVE: To quantify self-pay appointment prices and characterize the availability and structure of financial assistance programs (discounts and payment plans) in urology clinics nationwide. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This national, cross-sectional, audit

Contribution of Unspecified Brain Malignancies to Overall Brain Cancer Mortality Trends in the United States: A 26 years CDC WONDER Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Brain cancer mortality trends in the United States may be affected by deaths recorded as unspecified brain malignancies, affecting epidemiological interpretation. We aimed to evaluate the impact of unspecified brain malignancies on overall brain cancer mortality trends patterns over time. METHOD: Mortality data were extracted in June 2026 from the CDC WONDER as multiple causes of deaths with ICD- 10 codes (C71.9 and C71), respectively, from 1999 to 2024. The age-adjusted mortality rate (AAMR) per 100,000 persons, by sex, race, census, 2013 urbanization, state, and place of death,

Cardiac Cancer: An Evidence-Based Study of Occurrence.

INTRODUCTION: From 1931 to 2025, spanning 94 years, cardiac cancer has remained a rare and sporadic tumor that poses both an investigative dilemma and a therapeutic challenge. Autopsy findings indicate that the incidence of primary cardiac malignancies is approximately 0.02 percent. Surgical resection is considered a viable and often successful treatment option. AIMS: The present study aims to provide an overall assessment of cardiac cancer in Isfahan Province, Iran. OBJECTIVES: To provide detailed information on specific aspects, such as frequency and demographic characteristics of cardiac

Accuracy of New Hypertensive Crisis Diagnoses Using International Classification of Disease (ICD)-10: A Validation Study in a National Medicare Sample.

The incidence of hypertensive (HTN) crises in older adults has more than doubled over the past two decades. ICD-10 introduced codes for HTN urgency and emergency, but their validity has not been evaluated. We analyzed a 20% national sample of fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries aged ≥66 years (2016-2019). Medical records were reviewed for 220 randomly sampled emergency department visits or hospitalizations with a primary ICD-10 HTN crisis code (100 HTN urgency [I16.0], 100 HTN emergency [I16.1] and 20 unspecified [I16.9]). Physicians abstracted and adjudicated cases. Two gold standards (GS)

State Policy Variation and Telehealth Use by Oncology Specialists Treating Medicaid Patients.

Telehealth may improve access to specialized oncology care for Medicaid beneficiaries with hematological malignancies who face geographic and financial barriers. During the COVID-19 public health emergency, telehealth use expanded rapidly, yet state policies governing telehealth coverage/payment parity varied. Evidence is limited on how these policy differences influenced oncology telehealth use for Medicaid patients. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 2020-2021 multistate Medicaid claims. Adult and pediatric oncology specialists were identified based on board certification data. Teleh

Postpandemic Trends in Pediatric Respiratory Virus Hospitalizations: A Multicenter Study, 2019-2025.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly altered the circulation of respiratory viruses in children, changing the epidemiology of acute lower respiratory tract infections. In the postpandemic period, respiratory pathogens showed marked temporal variability. The 2024-2025 season was the first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season in Italy during which RSV immunoprophylaxis with nirsevimab was implemented, allowing evaluation of recent trends in pediatric hospitalizations. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study across 16 pediatric hospitals in Italy. Hospitalizations of

A Cross-Cultural Examination of Intrasexual Competition: The Links Between Mating Competition, Aggression, Appearance Enhancement, and Sexuality.

In the context of mating, individuals of the same sex often act as rivals in the pursuit, attraction, and retention of desirable partners. This study explored the relationships between intrasexual competition and various aspects of human mating psychology across three countries: Canada, Hungary, and Indonesia. A total of 661 adults (including women, men, non-binary, and gender-unspecified individuals) completed an online questionnaire assessing sensation seeking, aggression, beauty-enhancing behavior, openness to cosmetic surgery, sexual motivation, and sociosexuality. Hypotheses were tested v

Dementia subtype specification and cognitive evidence visibility in Turkish Court of Cassation decisions: a document analysis of 1,031 decisions (2005-2025).

BACKGROUND: Dementia is frequently invoked in medico-legal contexts where questions of legal capacity, guardianship, testamentary validity, transactional validity, and criminal responsibility arise. Although subtype differentiation and cognitive assessment are central to clinical dementia evaluation, it remains unclear to what extent such clinically meaningful detail is visible in appellate judicial reasoning. This study examined the visibility of dementia subtype specification and cognitive evidence in decisions of the Turkish Court of Cassation (2005-2025), and examined the ethical implicati

Pre-procedural disclosure of potential diagnostic errors in radiology: public perspectives in the Netherlands.

OBJECTIVE: To assess public attitudes toward prospective disclosure of diagnostic error risk in radiologic imaging (i.e., informing patients in advance about the possibility a radiologic examination may yield an incorrect finding, rather than disclosure of an error after it has occurred) and to identify factors influencing these preferences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A population-based survey was conducted in the Netherlands. Participants aged ≥ 18 years (n = 1524) responded to CT-scan vignettes describing pre-procedural potential diagnostic errors, varying by patient age (9, 26, 46, or 71 years
