"Being seen, heard, witnessed and acknowledged": a reflexive thematic analysis of peer support following termination for medical reasons among women in Great Britain.

BACKGROUND: Termination for medical reasons (TFMR) is associated with profound distress, grief and emotional trauma, as well as stigma and isolation. While peer support has been reported to reduce isolation and validate emotions in broader contexts, the distinct ethical and emotional complexities surrounding TFMR mean these findings cannot be assumed to transfer directly. TFMR‑specific evidence is therefore needed. AIM: To explore women's perspectives on peer support following termination for medical reasons (TFMR) in order to make policy and practice recommendations to improve support. METH

Lipid Composition in the Breast of Premenopausal BRCA1/2 Genetic Mutation Carriers Using MRI.

Deregulation of lipid composition in the breast has been suggested as an indicator of the risk of developing breast cancer, and chemical shift-encoded imaging (CSEI) in MRI allows rapid lipid composition mapping of the whole breast. We set out to examine if breast lipid composition in BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene carriers differed from women with breast cancer and controls. Eighty-two premenopausal female participants, 30 BRCA1/2 carriers, 37 women with breast cancer, and 15 controls, participated in this study. Monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and saturated fatty acids (MUFAs, PUFAs, SFAs) in the br

Involving Independent Mental Capacity Advocates (IMCAs) in Dental Care Decision-Making: A Qualitative Exploration of Dentists' Experiences in England and Wales.

INTRODUCTION: Delivering dental care to individuals who lack decision-making capacity involves complex ethical, legal, and clinical considerations. In England and Wales, Independent Mental Capacity Advocates (IMCAs) are required to support decisions about 'serious medical treatment', a concept given only broad definition in law. While Special Care Dentistry frequently involves patients with cognitive impairments, little is known about how dentists engage with advocates in treatment decision-making. OBJECTIVE: To explore dentists' experiences of appointing and working with advocates in dental

Relievvr: A Device for Postoperative Breast Comfort.

In 2024, more than 300,000 women in the United States were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Despite significant advances in chemotherapy and radiation, surgery continues to be a central tenet of these patients' care, with most patients requiring surgery for definitive treatment. Postoperative pain control and anxiety surrounding options for pain relief consistently rank as a major concern of patients before surgery. In a nation recovering from an opioid epidemic with more than 100,000 overdose deaths a year, patients and providers alike are looking for nonnarcotic and nonpharmaceutical a

Knowledge, attitude, and contraceptive use among married women attending a maternity hospital in Kabul, Afghanistan: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Family planning is a foundational component of reproductive health that empowers individuals to make informed decisions about childbearing. In Afghanistan, where maternal mortality remains critically high and contraceptive prevalence is low, understanding family planning dynamics is essential for improving reproductive outcomes. This study assessed knowledge, attitudes, and contraceptive use among married women attending a major maternity hospital in Kabul. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 356 married women attending Rabia Balkhi Maternity Hospital i

Who Gets by with Help from Friends? Multilevel Associations Between Loneliness, Friend Support, and Emotion Regulation in Adolescents with and Without Self-Injury.

Adolescence is a life period marked by increased emotionality, and, for some, volatile friendships and emotion dysregulation. Yet little research has examined peer processes in relation to adolescent emotion dysregulation from a dynamic perspective. This 3-wave longitudinal study examined two peer-related processes - loneliness and friend support - in association with emotion dysregulation with data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, we examined if these associations differed in those who had histories of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), a behavior known to be associated with emo

Prevalence and determinants of tobacco use among university students in Lebanon: Implications for smoke-free campus policies.

BACKGROUND: The tobacco epidemic is a global public health threat, with addiction often starting in the early adulthood stage of life. The Middle East Region is slow in adopting smoke-free campus policies, and few studies have examined smoking attitudes and behaviors among university students and their perspective on such policies. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the perceptions, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward smoking (used to denote using any tobacco products) and smoke-free campus policies among university students aged between 17 and 30 years old at a la

Exploring barriers and facilitators to HIV care among heterosexual men in western Kenya's fishing- and non-fishing-involved communities: insights through a masculinity lens.

Heterosexual men living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa have high rates of disengagement from HIV care. Despite advancements, barriers to care engagement exist, shaped by masculinities that valorize stoicism, strength and provider roles. This qualitative study was conducted in Kenya's Lake Victoria region. We enrolled 111 heterosexual men living with HIV (60 in care, 51 out of care) from six communities (both fishing-involved and non-fishing-involved). Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the social-ecological model. Results identified structural barriers - food

Exposure to Opportunities for Use Moderates the Associations of Descriptive Norms and Perceived Risk with Alcohol and Cannabis Use and Simultaneous Use.

We investigated whether exposures to opportunities for alcohol and cannabis use and simultaneous use moderate associations of descriptive norms and perceived risk with these behaviors such that substance use is lower for adolescents and young adults who report fewer opportunities regardless of their predispositions to engage in them. Method: Data were obtained using online surveys administered in 2023-24 to 1,014 adolescents and young adults (ages 15- to 20 years) in 40 California, USA, cities. They were asked how often they had an opportunity to engage in alcohol, cannabis, and simultaneous u

Engineering a Bioelectronic Hybrid Heart with Integrated Sensing and Electrical Modulation.

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, motivating the development of advanced therapeutic strategies, including engineered cardiac substitutes. Here, we report a bioelectronic hybrid heart that integrates engineered cardiac tissue with embedded electrophysiological sensing and stimulation capabilities. A decellularized cardiac scaffold was cellularized by injection of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and assembled with a cell-laden, three-dimensional-printed extracellular matrix coating containing a custom-designed electronic mesh. After 14

Relative distribution of reported illness presentations among ill international travellers: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Travel-related illness challenges clinical care and public health surveillance. Gastrointestinal, febrile/systemic, and respiratory presentations contribute substantially to morbidity, but their subgroup-specific distribution, which may help align clinical and public-health priorities with traveller profiles, has not been quantitatively synthesised. We aimed to describe the relative distribution of reported illness presentations across major syndrome/system categories among ill international travellers. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies publish

In Nietzsche's Sickroom: Kafka, the Will to Power, and a Tragic Ontology of Nursing.

Nursing philosophy has drawn on Friedrich Nietzsche before, but almost always to theorise the nurse's professional identity or the profession's political position: his Übermensch as a figure of self-overcoming against managerial instrumentalisation, his genealogy of morals as a lens that unmasks caring itself as a resentful inversion of medicine's authority, his transvaluation of values as a resource against neoliberal capture. Each reading stops at the threshold of the ward's politics. This paper turns instead to the ontological relation between the nurse and a body that cannot be cured, brin

Clinical Nursing in Times of War and a Pandemic.

Nurses who served in the Vietnam War and those who cared for patients during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic surge may be separated by decades, but they share the experience of caring for large numbers of critically injured, ill, or dying patients while risking their own lives. This article reviews the findings of two studies, one conducted in 1986 based on interviews with Vietnam War nurses, and one conducted in 2020 based on interviews with nurses during COVID-19, and explores the idea that professional nurses from different generations have similar thoughts when their lives are in danger and pat

Linking LGBTQ Identity Disclosure Reactions and Suicidal Ideation Among Youth: The Mechanism of Interpersonal-Psychological Factors.

OBJECTIVE: How parents and peers react to LGBTQ youth's identity disclosure plays a critical role in the youth's mental health. Building on the minority stress model and the interpersonal-psychological theory of suicide, this longitudinal study examined the associations between disclosure reactions from parents and peers and suicidal ideation through perceived burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness. METHOD: Two waves of survey data were used, with an analytic sample of 1,019 LGBTQ youth (Wave 1: Mage = 18.83, SD = 1.84). Approximately half of the participants identified as lesbian or gay,

Building creative momentum: Social and psychological factors associated with flow in Chinese artists.

Flow is a deeply immersive psychological state characterized by intense concentration, intrinsic motivation, and a perceived balance between challenge and skill. Although prior research has examined flow in contexts such as sports, education, and workplace performance, limited attention has been paid to how social, cognitive, and motivational factors are associated with flow experiences among practicing artists. This study examined the relationships among perceived social support, the positive mindset dimension, creative process, expected self/life, and flow among practicing artists in China.

Young adults' understanding of, and reaction to, those with uncertain genetic results.

BACKGROUND: Genetic advances increase the likelihood that children may receive uncertain diagnoses such as cystic fibrosis screen positive inconclusive diagnosis (CFSPID) from newborn screening. Research suggests a profound impact on parents. Research is needed to understand the impact on the child, especially at key developmental points such as young adulthood, when identity forms. As young adults (YA) are influenced by peer reactions, this novel study explored YAs' sensemaking of CFSPID, and their hypothetical reactions to peers or romantic partners with CFSPID. METHODS: Four focus groups w
