Long-term exposure to ultrafine particles and mortality from neurodegenerative diseases: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Transportation and industrial activities emit large quantities of air pollutants, including unregulated ultrafine particles (UFP, <0.1 um), which may adversely affect brain health. METHODS: We analyzed data from 2.1 million adults in the Canadian Census Health and Environment Cohorts (CanCHECs) living in Montreal and Toronto (2001-2019). Vital status and primary cause of death were obtained from the Canadian Vital Statistics- Death database. We assigned high-resolution estimates of UFP number concentrations and UFP size to participants' residential postal codes using three-year mo

Temporal Trends in Lung Cancer and Histological Subtype Incidence and Bayesian Projections to 2030 in China: Population-Based Quantitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death globally, with a significant burden in China, which accounts for more than one-third of the world's new cases and 40% of related mortalities. Despite evidence that low-dose computed tomography screening can reduce mortality, its limited uptake in China means that most patients are diagnosed at an advanced stage, contributing to a low 5-year survival rate compared to high-income countries. Although overall incidence trends have been well documented, there is a scarcity of population-based data on the temporal trends of differe

A sound approach: scoping review of adult lower urinary tract foreign body recognition and management.

INTRODUCTION: Insertion of foreign bodies into the lower urinary tract by adults is an uncommon but clinically important presentation encountered by urologists and emergency providers across a range of motivations. Retained or migrated objects can lead to serious complications including infection, calculus formation, and urethral trauma, often necessitating careful and complex management. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews. Because only published, de-identified case material was used, institutional review board approval was not required.

Pembrolizumab Plus Lenvatinib in Participants with Docetaxel-pretreated Metastatic Castration-resistant Prostate Cancer: Results from KEYNOTE-365 Cohort E.

Pembrolizumab has shown manageable safety and modest antitumor activity when used as a single agent in participants with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). Preclinical evidence suggests that lenvatinib, a vascular endothelial growth factor-targeted agent, inhibits angiogenesis and cell migration in prostate cancer. Safety and efficacy of pembrolizumab plus lenvatinib in participants with docetaxel-pretreated mCRPC were evaluated in cohort E of the phase 1b/2 KEYNOTE-365 study. Eligible adults with confirmed mCRPC, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECO

Validity of ICD-10 diagnosis codes for childhood sensorineural hearing loss in the Danish National Patient Registry.

PURPOSE: To validate eight commonly used International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) diagnosis codes for childhood sensorineural hearing loss registered in the Danish National Patient Registry. METHODS: We conducted a registry-based validation study in the Central Denmark Region. A random sample of 500 children younger than 18 years with at least one predefined ICD-10 hearing loss code registered between February 2019 and December 2021 was selected for medical record review. Codes were validated against documentation from ear-nose-throat and audiology services, including

Selective (dis)honesty: Choosing overly positive feedback only when the truth hurts.

In two studies (N = 886), we examined how individuals judge and select feedback providers for those who either handle criticism well or poorly after performing a low-quality task. Prosocial liars who provided overly positive feedback, were judged as more moral than honest feedback providers. However, despite this, honest feedback providers were preferred for both oneself and others. Interestingly, when choosing a feedback provider for a vulnerable recipient versus a generic other, participants preferred a prosocial liar in the former case. Similarly, a 'sensitive' feedback provider, defined as

Patient-Reported Outcomes Across Treatment Strategies in Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: A Meta-Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Given the favorable prognosis of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC), treatment decisions increasingly rely on patient-reported outcomes (PROs), such as health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Comparative HRQOL data between active surveillance, thermal ablation, and surgery remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare HRQOL among adults with PTMC undergoing active surveillance, thermal ablation, or surgery to inform shared decision-making. DATA SOURCES: Embase, MEDLINE via Ovid, Web of Science Core Collection, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the top 100 reference

Federated Learning for Histopathology Image Classification: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objective: The integration of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) has significantly enhanced medical image classification, especially in histopathology, by improving diagnostic accuracy and aiding clinical decision making. However, data privacy concerns and restrictions on sharing patient data limit the development of effective DL models. Federated learning (FL) offers a promising solution by enabling collaborative model training across institutions without exposing sensitive data. This systematic review aims to comprehensively evaluate the current state of FL applications

Malignant Craniopharyngioma With Features Resembling Ghost Cell Odontogenic Carcinoma: A Case Report and Histopathology Literature Review.

Malignant transformation of craniopharyngioma is an exceptionally rare and poorly characterized phenomenon. We report a case of a 15-year-old girl who developed symptom recurrence 9 years after undergoing surgery and radiotherapy for adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma. Histology revealed malignant areas comprising highly proliferative basaloid cells with abrupt transitions into ghost cells, resembling ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma. We conducted a literature review and pooled case analysis of 45 cases, which showed a median benign-to-malignant latency of 10 years and a median overall surviva

Disability Diagnoses Identified by the American Community Survey 6-Question Sequence.

IMPORTANCE: Federal survey data collection identifies people with disabilities predominantly by using a 6-question sequence asking about different functional impairments known as the American Community Survey-6 (ACS-6). However, little is known about the specific diagnoses identified by the ACS-6 or whether they vary across demographic subgroups. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the disability diagnoses identified by the ACS-6 and assess to what extent they identify a consistent population across demographic subgroups. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study among people with

Psychological well-being and resilience experiences of educators teaching in juvenile correctional facilities: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Education is widely acknowledged as a cornerstone of rehabilitation for incarcerated youth. However, less attention has been paid to the specific realities faced by the educators who deliver it. These educators often operate under intense stress, experiencing burnout and emotional exhaustion while managing the complex and multifaceted needs of their students. This scoping review seeks to examine and synthesize psychological well-being and resilience experiences of educators working within juvenile correctional facilities. METHODS: Our methodology was informed by the Joanna Brigg

Public (un)willingness to trade-off benefits and harms in decisions about cancer screening: A discrete choice experiment.

ObjectivesTo quantify the harms participants are willing to accept for varying benefits from cancer screening following provision of information.MethodsWe conducted an online discrete choice experiment with two samples of the UK public. Attributes were number of cancer diagnoses and deaths prevented (benefits) and overdiagnoses, false positives and false negatives (harms) for a population who are/are not screened for an unspecified cancer over their lifetimes. After selecting the best-fitting conditional logistic regression model for each sample, we used latent class analysis to investigate pr

Against Moral Panic and Citation Fiction: A Critique of "Panem, Corticoids and Circenses" and a Proposal for Editorial Gatekeeping on Reference Integrity.

The proposed Enhanced Games have become a convenient stage for bioethical sermonising about risk, authenticity, and the "spirit of sport". This is epitomized by a recent article arguing that institutionalizing pharmacological enhancement under the "pretence of medical supervision and personal autonomy" would redefine human excellence in "purely biochemical terms", erode ethical norms, normalize doping, and burden public health systems. The present paper offers a two-level response. First, I criticise the argument on its merits. Its central claims rely on rhetorical inflation, false dichotomies

Evaluation of randomized controlled trial literature in traditional Chinese medicine: a literature quality assessment system.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have evaluated traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinical randomized controlled trial (RCT) literature broadly, but they have provided limited depth in evaluating the specific aspects of trial quality. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop a specialized literature quality assessment system for TCM RCTs. METHODS: We integrated international standards with TCM characteristics to create a checklist for evaluating basic method information and intervention operations. A rating system was established to classify content into four categories based on completeness and a

Preschool Hand Function Assessment Instruments: A Scoping Review With Targeted Analysis of Performance-Based Instruments.

Hand function is a critical determinant of preschool children's participation in everyday occupations. Accurate hand function assessment is vital for guiding interventions, yet assessment practices are highly variable. Despite the abundance of instruments, only a few standardised performance-based tools assess all hand function components. No comprehensive mapping exists of key preschool instrument specifications to guide clinicians and researchers, particularly those working in diverse contexts. The study mapped all published hand function-relevant instruments used with children aged 3-5 year
