Tumor-Induced Parkinsonism Due to a Large Meningioma Diagnosed by 99m Tc-TRODAT-1 SPECT/CT.

A 67-year-old woman complained of rest and postural tremors in her left upper extremity, associated with bradykinesia and gait disorder since 2 years ago, with no significant response to antiparkinsonism drugs. Dopamine transporter SPECT/CT revealed a remarkable area of 99m Tc-TRODAT-1 uptake in a huge tumoral lesion in the right frontotemporal region, compressing and dislocating the right striatum with evidence of significant midline shift. The patient underwent surgical resection with a diagnosis of meningioma on preoperative MRI and postoperative histology report, experiencing a marked reco

1-[2-(4-Benzyloxyphenoxy)Ethyl]Imidazole inhibits monoamine oxidase B and protects against neuronal loss and behavioral impairment in rodent models of Parkinson's disease.

Monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) is well known as a therapeutic target for Parkinson's disease (PD). MAO-B inhibitors retain antiparkinsonism abilities to improve motor function and prevent neuronal loss by decreasing dopamine metabolism and oxidative stress in the brain. From the study to find novel antiparkinsonism drugs that can inhibit MAO-B activity, neuronal loss, and behavioral deficits in the mouse model of PD, we identified that 1-[2-(4-benzyloxyphenoxy)ethyl]imidazole (BPEI) or safinamide strongly and selectively inhibited MAO-B activities in a dose-dependent manner (IC50 of BPEI and safi

A rare case of Parkinson's disease with severe neck pain owing to crowned dens syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Pain is regarded as one of the most common nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). In particular, musculoskeletal pain has been reported as the most common type of PD-associated pain. Crowned dens syndrome (CDS), related to microcrystalline deposition in the periodontoid process, is the main cause of acute or chronic cervical pain. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes the case of an 87-year-old woman who had severe bradykinesia, muscle rigidity, gait disturbance and neck pain. Laboratory examination revealed marked elevations of white blood cells (10,100/µl) and C-react

Findings and lessons learned from a multi-partner collaboration to increase cervical cancer prevention efforts in Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: The PCI-CURE (Percutaneous Coronary Intervention-Clopidogrel in Unstable Angina to Prevent Recurrent Events) and CREDO (Clopidogrel for the Reduction of Events During Observation) studies have demonstrated that, in addition to aspirin, pre-treatment with clopidogrel followed by long-term (i.e. 9-12 months) therapy significantly reduces the risk of atherothrombotic events in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). OBJECTIVE: To examine the economic implications, from the Dutch healthcare perspective, of the use of clopidogrel in patients undergoing PCI (electi

Parkinson's disease with and without REM sleep behaviour disorder: are there any clinical differences?

Rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) may serve as a useful indicator to approach Parkinson's disease (PD); however, PD patients do not always exhibit RBD. We wondered whether the presence of RBD would be reflected in the expansion of PD lesions and represent the same PD entity. We examined the clinical differences between PD with and without RBD and studied the frequency of RBD-like symptoms (RBD-s) and clinical differences in 150 PD patients, including 81 patients (54.0%) who satisfied the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, Revised, minimum clinical criteria for RBD

Power-law temporal autocorrelation of activity reflects severity of parkinsonism.

We aimed to obtain a reliable, objective scale representing disease severity for appropriate management of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Nineteen patients with PD at the Department of Neurology, Tokyo University Hospital, were classified into mild (n = 10) or severe groups (n = 9) depending on their Hoehn-Yahr scores, and wore accelerometers on their wrists for more than 6 consecutive days. During this time we monitored their subjective assessments of symptom severity and analyzed the power-law exponents (alpha) for local maxima and minima of fluctuations in the activity time series.

Autosomal recessive early-onset parkinsonism with diurnal fluctuation: clinicopathologic characteristics and molecular genetic identification.

Autosomal recessive early-onset parkinsonism with diurnal fluctuation (AR-EPDF, syn. autosomal recessive juvenile parkinsonism, PARK2) is one of the hereditary parkinsonian syndromes. We examined subjects consisting of 43 patients from 22 families with AR-EPDF. The clinical features were relatively homogeneous, including the average age at onset of 26.1 years, beginning with dystonic gait disturbance, diurnal fluctuation of the symptoms (sleep benefit) unrelated to medication, dystonia (mainly foot dystonia), hyperactive tendon reflex, remarkable effect of levodopa and other antiparkinsonism d

[Parkinsonism after methyl alcohol poisoning].

Two cases of parkinsonism due to methyl alcohol poisoning are reported. In the first patient, parkinsonism features were mild and stable, while in the second they progressively developed in the weeks following the poisoning. None of the two patients had significant visual abnormalities during the clinical evolution. Both patients had symmetrical putaminal lesions in CT, and one in NMR imaging. The response to antiparkinsonism drugs was absent in one case and it could not be evaluated in the other because of patient's death. On the basis of theses two cases the clinical and therapeutic features

Flunarizine-induced parkinsonism in the elderly.

Twenty-seven patients (19 women and 8 men, ages 63 to 88 years; mean, 74 years) displayed mild to moderate parkinsonism and altered ballistic motor performances during long-term flunarizine treatment. One month after, flunarizine withdrawal, 20 patients showed clear-cut improvements in both clinical features and ballistic motor performances; a complete recovery within 6 months was observed in all these patients but one, who still showed very mild slowness of movement. On the other hand, seven patients showed little clinical improvement and still maintained markedly altered ballistic motor perf

Antiviral activity of Norakin (triperiden) and related anticholinergic antiparkinsonism drugs.

In view of the coincidence of antiviral and antiparkinsonism activities of amantadine four antiparkinsonism drugs, NorakinR (triperiden), ParkopanR (trihexyphenidyl), AntiparkinR (diethylbenzhydramine) and AkinetonR (biperiden) were tested for antiviral activity in various virus-cell systems. Norakin inhibited the replication of influenza A viruses in chick embryo fibroblast, MDCK and Ehrlich ascites tumour cells. It also inhibited the replication of measles virus in Vero cells, 50% inhibitory concentrations being 2-6 micrograms/ml. The drugs were also active against influenza B virus. Several

The interactions of 1-alkyl-4,4-diphenylpiperidines with opiate receptors.

1-Alkyl-4,4-diphenylpiperidines inhibit the binding of mu- and delta-opiate receptor agonists to crude synaptosomal membranes of rat brain. Opiate receptor affinity is dependent on the nature of the 1-alkyl substitution. In displacing [3H]etorphine, [3H]dihydromorphine and [3H][D-Ala2,D-Leu5] enkephalin, the 1-methyl-derivative was most effective (IC50 [3H]etorphine = 9 microM, IC50 [3H]dihydromorphine = 0.71 microM, IC50 [3H][D-Ala2,D-Leu5]enkephalin = 2.1 microM). 1-t-Butyl-4,4-diphenylpiperidine and its 1-isopropyl analogue, used as antiparkinsonism drugs, exhibit distinctly lower inhibitin

Pharmacological characteristics of abnormal behavior induced by harmine with special reference to tremor in mice.

Harmine, a hallucinogen with potent monoamine oxidase inhibitory properties, induced abnormal behavior, including tremor, scratching, head twitch and cage biting, in the mouse. A dose-dependent tremor was produced by all routes of administration of harmine. Although oxotremorine tremor was markedly suppressed by atropine, harmine tremor was unaffected by cholinergic drugs, remarkably inhibited by dopaminergic drugs, antidepressants and diazepam, mildly diminished by p-chlorophenylalanine, markedly augmented by 5-hydroxytryptophan and mildly increased by alpha-methyl-p-tyrosine. These findings
