INTRODUCTION: Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is thought to occur frequently in asthma. However, there are no available data about the occurrence of ABPA in patients with simultaneous asthma and COPD.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter cohort study using medical records from 3382 subjects. The asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) was defined as post-bronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 s divided by a forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) of <0.7. In addition, patients had either a history of asthma or significant bronchodilator reversibility. The subjects were categorized into nonsmok

BACKGROUND: Simple pulmonary aspergilloma (SPA) in chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) is characterized by a ball-like lesion within a pre-existing lung cavity. The detection rate of Aspergillus in cultures is low. There are no established clinical diagnostic methods specifically focused on SPA indicated for surgery. This study aimed to develop a simple and reliable diagnostic approach by integrating imaging and serological findings.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 15 patients with ball-like lesions in lung cavities who underwent lung resection. Four imaging characteristics

In this case report we present a 70-year-old patient with metastatic melanoma who was treated with combined ipilimumab-nivolumab. After two cycles, the patient developed concurrent immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-related hypophysitis and colitis that required hospitalization. Despite discontinuation of immunotherapy and initiation of corticosteroids, the patient experienced steroid-refractory colitis, which required readmission. During the following weeks, the patient developed ICI-related polyneuropathy, which was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). After these irAEs, three comp

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute, immune-mediated neuropathy characterized by rapidly progressive, symmetrical weakness, areflexia, and variable sensory loss. It is often triggered by preceding respiratory or gastrointestinal infection through a mechanism of molecular mimicry, leading to demyelination or axonal injury. Diagnosis is supported by cerebrospinal fluid albumin-cytologic dissociation and nerve conduction studies. Early initiation of intravenous immunoglobulin or plasma exchange, alongside vigilant supportive care, reduces morbidity and prevents complications such as respira

Neuropathic pain is a common but often under-recognized and undertreated complication of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), with the potential to significantly hinder rehabilitation. We describe the case of a young man with GBS who developed severe upper limb pain, allodynia, and hyperalgesia that were refractory to intravenous immunoglobulin and pharmacologic treatment. The pain caused significant distress and limited therapy participation. A structured trial of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) was introduced as part of a multimodal rehabilitation program, alongside pharmacologi

A 62-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with severe pain in all extremities and difficulty in moving. Neurological findings included sensory disturbances with severe pain, weakness, and areflexia in all extremities, with positive Spurling and Lasègue signs. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed protein-cell dissociation. A nerve conduction study revealed the appearance of A-waves and loss of F-waves. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging revealed gadolinium enhancement in the cauda equina. Therefore, the patient was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) with severe radicular pain.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute autoimmune polyradiculoneuropathy characterized by progressive flaccid paralysis. The standard treatments include intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) and plasma exchange (PE), with limited accessibility to these treatments. Efgartigimod is an FcRn antagonist that reduces IgG levels, similar to PE, serving as a potential alternative. This study aims to compare the efficacy of Efgartigimod with standard IVIg in GBS.
METHODS: This was a multicenter observational study in China. Eligible participants were aged ≥ 16 years, meeting the di

COVID-19 vaccination has played a pivotal role in mitigating the global health crisis and reducing morbidity and mortality associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. While its public health benefits are unequivocal, the unprecedented scale of vaccination-reaching billions worldwide-has also enabled the detection of rare autoimmune events, including systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Although such events occur in only a small subset of individuals, often influenced by genetic, environmental, or dosage-related factors, they underscore the

OBJECTIVES: Salivary Immunoglobulin A (IgA) plays a crucial role in mucosal immunity. However, the mechanisms that regulate its production are unclear. Spermidine (SPD), a polyamine involved in various cellular functions, has been implicated in immune modulation. In this study, we investigated the presence of SPD in rat salivary glands and its potential role in enhancing production of IgA.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats were fed a low-polyamine diet for eight weeks. Submandibular and parotid glands were harvested and metabolomic analysis was used to determine the SPD concentration, reverse transcr

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV), a member of the Deltaretrovirus genus, causes enzootic bovine leukosis, leading to clinical outcomes that range from asymptomatic infection to malignant lymphoma. Host genetic factors significantly influence BLV susceptibility, proviral load (PVL), immune response, and disease progression. This mini-review synthesizes evidence on genetic polymorphisms in immune-related genes such as BoLA-DRB3, Tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and immunoglobulin loci, and examines novel findings from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Beyond classical immune genes, recent GWAS have

Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) infection has been implicated in a broad spectrum of clinical conditions, encompassing both neoplastic and inflammatory-degenerative disorders, associated with relevant immunological dysfunctions. Given the distinct epidemiological profiles and clinical manifestations associated with HTLV-1 and HTLV-2 infections, establishing an accurate differential diagnosis is of critical importance. The serological/molecular approaches currently available for differential diagnosis are expensive, time-consuming, and require multiple complementary assays, and still lead to

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rapidly progressing immune-mediated neuropathy that remains the leading cause of acute flaccid paralysis worldwide. A substantial proportion of GBS cases are precipitated by infectious agents, most notably Campylobacter jejuni and Haemophilus influenzae, which initiate pathogenic autoimmunity via molecular mimicry. This narrative review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the microbial triggers of GBS and elucidate the immune mechanisms linking infection to neuropathic damage. We discuss the evolving landscape of GBS pathogenesis, emphasizing the roles of

BACKGROUND: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) including umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) is considered to be a potentially curative treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). However, post-transplantation complications continue to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in transplant recipients, presenting significant ongoing challenges in the field. Herein, we reported a rare case who successfully recovered from concurrent nephrotic syndrome (NS) and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) following UCBT in AML. CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old female was

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has revolutionized the treatment of hematologic malignancies but is increasingly associated with unique neurotoxic complications. While cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS) are well-characterized, Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) remains a rare and underrecognized adverse event. This PRISMA-guided systematic review, supplemented by a novel case report, outlines the clinical, radiographic, and diagnostic characteristics of GBS following CAR T-cell therapy. A total of 10 cases were evaluated
