The safety of percutaneous liver biopsy with a 1.2 mm Menghini needle in infants aged one year or less was investigated. One hundred and eighty four procedures performed from 1975 to 1985 were reviewed. There were no deaths or major complications within 48 hours associated with the procedure. A retrospective cohort mortality study of workers exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in two plants manufacturing electrical capacitors was reported in 1981. The study was conducted primarily to examine the risk of cancer mortality associated with exposure to PCBs. Based on animal data, liver cancer was the disease of most interest. Spindle-cell hepatocellular carcinoma is an unusual morphologic variant of hepatocellular carcinoma with a typical sarcomatous appearance. Hepatocellular carcinomas, cholangiocellular carcinomas, and "indeterminate" forms have been studied by immunohistochemical detection of several antigens: alpha-fetoprotein and CEA, as well as type IV collagen, laminin, and keratin. Five gastric adenocarcinomas and their metastatic nodules in the liver with high serum AFP levels were examined by histologic and immunohistochemical methods. Eighteen children with refractory malignant tumors were treated with cis-DDP. They included 10 neuroblastomas, 2 rhabdomyosarcomas, and one each of hepatoblastoma, yolk sac tumor, osteosarcoma and pinealoma.
