Medial Olivocochlear Reflex Strength Predicts Musical Perception and Speech-in-Noise Performance in Nonmusicians.

OBJECTIVE: The medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the cochlea and is implicated in auditory scene analysis. Although musicians often exhibit robust MOC function, it remains unclear whether related auditory advantages stem from innate predisposition or training-induced plasticity. This study investigated the relationship between individual variations in MOC reflex function, musical perception, and speech-in-noise (SIN) performance in nonmusicians. METHODS: Fifty-eight normal-hearing nonmusicians were divided into two groups on the basis of the magnitu

Lower bioelectrical phase angle is associated with audiometric hearing loss in middle-aged and older adults.

Bioelectrical phase angle is an integrated marker of cellular integrity, fluid distribution, nutritional status, and physiological reserve, but its relationship with objective sensory function in later life remains unclear. This population-based cross-sectional study analyzed adults aged 40 years or older from the 2022-2023 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Whole-body phase angle at 50 kHz was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis, and pure-tone audiometry was used to determine better-ear speech-frequency pure-tone average (PTA) and high-frequency hearing thresh

Speech-in-Noise Ability and Longitudinal Cortical Thinning in Speech-Processing Networks.

IMPORTANCE: Age-related hearing loss is a major modifiable risk factor for dementia, yet the neural mechanisms linking auditory dysfunction to brain aging and cognitive decline remain unclear. In particular, it is unknown whether peripheral hearing loss, central auditory processing deficits, or hearing aid use best predict neurodegenerative change in older adults. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hearing thresholds, speech-in-noise ability, and hearing aid use are associated with longitudinal cortical atrophy and cognitive trajectories in cognitively normal older adults. Autonomic responses to trigger sounds persist despite attentional redirection in misophonia.

Misophonia is a disorder characterized by exaggerated emotional responses and heightened autonomic arousal triggered by specific sounds. Despite evidence that higher-level cognitive processes contribute to misophonia, it remains uncertain whether they can be used to modulate misophonic responses to trigger sounds. Based on the observation that individuals with misophonia often report listening to music as a coping mechanism, we investigated how directing attention to music could modulate physiological responses of individuals with misophonia in the presence of trigger sounds. Participants with
