Frequency, Plausibility and Internal Consistency of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Coding Related to Cystic Echinococcosis Within the Jordanian Ministry of Health Database: A Quality-Assurance Study.

Background/Objectives: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) remains endemic in many regions worldwide, including Jordan. It is one of the three zoonotic infections caused by the tapeworm of the genus Echinococcus. The epidemiology of CE in Jordan remains poorly defined, with systematic national investigations being absent for the past three decades. International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is a universal coding system for disease archiving within healthcare facilities. This coding system is utilized by the Hakeem program, a health informatics system that includes all Ministry of Health (MOH) hospi

Hypertransaminasemia in hospitalized children: Insights from a national multicenter study by the Italian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.

OBJECTIVES: Hypertransaminasemia is a frequent finding in hospitalized children with common pediatric illnesses, often considered a transitory phenomenon associated with systemic inflammation/injury. This study aims to assess the prevalence and causes of incidentally detected hypertransaminasemia in children admitted to general pediatric units for non-chronic liver-related illnesses. METHODS: This is a prospective, multicenter observational study. Children with transaminase measurement at hospital admission were enrolled from June 2021 to July 2023. Inclusion criteria were: Age >30 days to 17

Somatostatin Receptor Expression on [68Ga]Ga-DOTATATE PET Among Patients with Poorly Differentiated Extrapulmonary Neuroendocrine Carcinomas: A Prospective Study.

Limited data are available regarding somatostatin receptor (SSTR) expression in poorly differentiated extrapulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC). Some retrospective series have reported strong SSTR expression in up to 40% of patients with NEC. However, these figures may be influenced by selection bias, such as imaging of patients with lower Ki-67 index or uncertainty about pathologic tumor differentiation. Methods: In this prospective study, [68Ga]Ga-DOTATATE PET was compared with [18F]FDG PET in patients with metastatic extrapulmonary NEC and at least 1 measurable site of metastasis. The p

Hepatic dysfunction and long-term risk of neurodegenerative diseases: A UK Biobank-based analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are incurable disorders with diverse etiologies; emerging evidence links liver health to NDDs' risk, yet no clinical systematic investigation exists. METHODS: We examined liver health (assessed via 6 blood biochemistry, 21 hepatokines, 2 imaging markers, 8 liver diseases) and its link to NDDs. The NDDs encompassed Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), unspecified dementia, vascular dementia (VaD), all-cause dementia (ACD), Parkinson's disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), all-cause par

Masked divergence in cancer mortality following COVID-19 disruption.

BACKGROUND: While overall cancer mortality in the United States has declined steadily for decades, systemic healthcare disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic-including delays in screening, diagnosis, and treatment-may have created heterogeneous impacts across different malignancy types that are not visible in aggregate data. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether site-specific cancer mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023) deviated from expected trajectories based on established pre-pandemic trends. METHODS: This population-based analysis utilized U.S. National Vital Statistics System

Residential radon in Peru: challenges for health surveillance and lung cancer prevention.

The Journal of Genetics, started by William Bateson in 1910, played a distinguished role in the early years of genetics. However, it stopped publishing in 1978. The Indian Academy of Sciences revived it in 1985, and has published it regularly since then. To commemorate this landmark, I highlight one of the 17 articles published that year. 'The isolation and genetic analysis of a Caenorhabditis elegans… X-chromosome balancer' by András Fodor and Péter Deak, of the Institute of Genetics, Biological Research Centre, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Szeged, Hungary. Amebic liver abscess hospitalizations in the United States: A nationwide analysis of trends and severe morbidity, 2002-2023.

AIMS: US population-based data on amebic liver abscess (ALA) are limited and predate the ICD-10-CM era. We quantified national trends, inpatient outcomes, and factors associated with severe in-hospital morbidity among adult ALA hospitalizations. METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of the 2002-2023 National Inpatient Sample, excluding 2015. ALA was identified by ICD-9-CM 006.3 or ICD-10-CM A06.4 in any diagnosis position. The primary morbidity outcome was a composite of severe sepsis, acute kidney injury, liver-related decompensation, gram-negative septic

The role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in the evaluation of focal splenic lesions.

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in the characterization of non-traumatic focal splenic lesions. Focal splenic lesions are less common than in other abdominal organs like the liver. Conventional ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound have a limited role in the characterization of splenic lesions, resulting in many of them unspecified. Contrast ultrasound is an accessible, cheap, and safe technique which can help in the immediate characterization of lesions incidentally detected in the ultrasound examination, being a good alternative to others imagi

Current concepts on pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of hepatic sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory multisystemic granulomatosis of unknown cause, with a wide range of clinical features, characterized by the presence of non-caseating granulomas. Liver is the third involved organ after lungs and lymph nodes, with a reported prevalence of hepatic involvement in 5 to 25% of systemic symptomatic sarcoidosis. The immunopathogenesis of sarcoidosis is still unknown but it seems to involve the innate and adaptive immune actors in response to a putative antigen in genetically predisposed individuals. Because of its paucisymptomatic presentation, hepatic sarcoidosis may

Gastrointestinal Burden in Patients With Pancreatic Insufficient Cystic Fibrosis Before and After Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor Use.

BACKGROUND: The advent of highly effective modulator therapies (HEMT), namely elexacaftor, tezacaftor, and ivacaftor (ETI), has resulted in substantial improvements in lung function, growth, and quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF). However, the understanding of the impact of ETI on gastrointestinal (GI) disease burden is evolving. This study aims to describe and compare the prevalence of GI manifestations, prescribed GI medications, and GI procedures between 2 time periods, pre-ETI and post-ETI approval, in children with CF (CwCF) and adolescents with CF. METHODS: This is a

Invasive Fungal Disease in Solid Organ and Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Recipients, United States.

BACKGROUND: Updated benchmark data on invasive fungal disease (IFD) in solid organ transplantation (SOT) and hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) recipients are necessary to increase clinical recognition and inform treatment and prevention strategies. We estimated IFD incidence and potential risk factors in transplant recipients in a large US commercial health insurance database. METHODS: We observed patients who received SOT or HCT during 2018-2022 until IFD development, disenrollment, or database end date (July 31, 2023). We calculated incidence (per 1000 person-years) and time to IFD d

Patterns and prognostic implications of distant metastasis in breast Cancer based on SEER population data.

Distant metastasis remains the leading cause of mortality in breast cancer, yet comprehensive population-based evaluations of metastatic site combinations and their survival implications are limited. This study aimed to explore the clinicopathological determinants and prognostic outcomes of site-specific and multi-organ metastases in breast cancer using SEER data. A total of 200,558 female breast cancer patients diagnosed between 2014 and 2023 were extracted from the SEER database. Logistic regression was used to assess associations between clinicopathological features and metastatic patterns.

Emerging Use of BPC-157 in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine: A Systematic Review.

Background: Body protection compound-157 (BPC-157) is a naturally occurring gastric peptide that promotes mucosal integrity and homeostasis. Preclinical studies show its potential for promoting healing in musculoskeletal injuries such as fractures, tendon ruptures, ligament tears, and muscle injuries. Despite lacking US Food and Drug Administration approval and its use being banned in professional sports, it is increasingly used by clinicians and athletes. Purpose: We sought to (1) provide a comprehensive synthesis of the BPC-157 literature from an orthopedic sports medicine perspective and (2
