Fatal poisoning of Old Polish ducks with Amanita muscaria.

BACKGROUND: Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) is a poisonous mushroom containing ibotenic acid (IBA) and muscimol (MUS), two neuroactive alkaloids capable of causing severe or fatal intoxication. While human poisoning is well documented, information on fatal intoxication in birds is limited. This report presents the first documented case of fatal poisoning of Old Polish ducks following ingestion of A. muscaria, confirmed by anatomopathological and toxicological analyses. METHODS: Post-mortem specimens, including blood, heart, brain, kidney, liver, lung, pectoral and femoral muscles, and gastrointe

Poly-Infections in a Patient Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a medical emergency typically seen in immunocompromised patients with neutrophil counts below 500 cells/µL. It is often associated with chemotherapy, hematologic malignancy, and advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Severe neutropenia in a low-level viremia and preserved CD4 T-helper cell (CD4) is uncommon and warrants evaluation for alternative etiologies. A 68-year-old man with HIV presented with fever and an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of zero, without recent chemotherapy or other known myelosuppressive medications. Gram-negative bacteremia w

Construction of a depression risk prediction model for hepatitis B patients based on machine learning strategy.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B (HBV) is a chronic viral infection that can lead to cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer, and has a profound impact on the patient's mental health. However, current depression screening mainly relies on self-filled scales and clinical experience, lacking objective and efficient prediction tools. This study aims to construct a risk prediction model for depression in hepatitis B patients based on machine learning, and explore the key features that affect the occurrence of depression, so as to optimize mental health management strategies. METHODS: This study used th

Association between coronary artery disease and viral hepatitis: Perspectives based on the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and Mendelian randomization analyses.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the leading forms of cardiovascular disease in Europe and the primary cause of death in the region, while millions of individuals in Europe remain chronically infected with viral hepatitis, resulting in a persistent disease burden. A European study has previously indicated that the prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection among hospitalized patients with ischemic heart disease is significantly higher than the prevalence observed in the general population screened locally. Given this, further clarification of the association between CAD and viral hepatit

Prevalence of liver fibrosis and steatotic liver disease in community-dwelling adults in China (the CHESS-LiverHealth project): cross-sectional baseline data from a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic liver disease is rapidly increasing worldwide, largely driven by the growing epidemics of overweight and obesity, diabetes, and harmful alcohol consumption. China has the world's largest population with these conditions, but has scarce prospective, community-based data to estimate the true burden of chronic liver disease. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of liver fibrosis and steatotic liver disease and identify their associated factors in community-dwelling adults in China. METHODS: The CHESS-LiverHealth project was an investigator-initiated, prospective, community-bas

Association Between the GGT/HDL-C Ratio and Ultrasonography-Defined NAFLD in Vietnamese Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and aims. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a prevalent chronic liver disease associated with cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and increased risks of liver-related and cardiovascular mortality. Many patients, however, remain asymptomatic until advanced stages. The gamma-glutamyl transferase to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (GGT/HDL-C) ratio is a simple, noninvasive marker reflecting hepatic dysfunction and cardiometabolic imbalance. This study assessed its association with NAFLD and determined an optimal cutoff for identifying NAFLD. Methods. We conducted a cros

Unveiling the impact of dengue fever on hearing health: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral illness, has varied systemic manifestations, but its auditory effects remain underexplored. The objective of this study was to assess the association between dengue infection and hearing loss. METHODS: A prospective case-control study was conducted on 79 patients-40 dengue-positive (NS1 antigen confirmed) and 39 with other febrile illnesses. All participants underwent otological examination and pure tone audiometry. RESULTS: Hearing loss was observed in 15.2 per cent of dengue patients, with none in controls (p < 0.001). The odds ratio for hea

Blood pressure variability: a still underestimated topic.

The importance of blood pressure variability has grown exponentially over the past two to three years. In this review, we aim to discuss the reasons underlying this increasing interest. First, we describe the different methods used to assess blood pressure variability, including very short-term (beat-to-beat), short-term (24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring), mid-term (home self-measurements), and long-term (visit-to-visit measurements), as well as the mathematical indices used to quantify it. We then address the clinical relevance of blood pressure variability. First, increased variabil

A Study on Prevalence of Malarial Retinopathy among Malaria Cases and to Determine Its Presence as a Marker of Severe Malaria: Observations from Eastern India.

BACKGROUND: Malarial retinopathy refers to a constellation of changes seen in severe or complicated malaria cases. These include: retinal whitening, vessel changes-whitening, tramlining, retinal hemorrhages, and papilledema. There are very few Indian studies on this entity. Since retina can be easily visualized by direct ophthalmoscopy, this study was done to determine prevalence of malarial retinopathy among malaria cases and to determine relationship between malarial retinopathy and severity of the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was done at Indoor and Outdoor Departments of Tropi

Harnessing double-stranded RNA therapy targeting coat protein (CP), helper component-protease (HC-Pro) and viral protein genome-linked (VPg) for controlling chilli veinal mottle virus in Capsicum chinense cv. Umorok.

Pictures certainly are worth a thousand words in the case of the structure of the connective tissue skeleton of normal and diseased myocardium. This report reviews the connective tissue matrix of the normal human myocardial tissue and the pathological myocardial fibrosis in left ventricular hypertrophy due to chronic arterial hypertension in humans and in human chronic chagasic myocarditis. The myocardial connective tissue matrix was studied employing a cell-maceration method that removes the myocardial tissue non-fibrous elements, and leaves behind a non-collapsed matrix, thus allowing a bett

Missed opportunities for anal cancer (AC) screening in women living with HIV: results from a survey across the European region.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of anal cancer (AC) is higher in women with HIV than in women without HIV due to immunosuppression and persistence of human papilloma virus (HPV). Since 2024, the International Anal Neoplasia Society's and European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) guidelines recommend annual AC screening of cisgender women (CW) of ≥45 years old, transgender women (TW) of ≥35 years old and women with previous vulvar high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL)/cancer regardless of age. This study describes current clinical practices and protocols for AC screening in women with HIV with

Cell cycle gene expression and microbial profiles associated with HPV related cervical neoplasia and cervical microbiome shifts.

Background and objectives The improper regulation of the cell cycle is a significant risk factor for cervical cancer (CC), which is a serious health concern for women worldwide. The interaction between viral pathogens and microbiota with host cells could be vital in this dysregulation. The research aimed to explore changes in the transcription levels of CDK2 and CCNE1, and how these changes relate to the HPV genotypes in women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) compared with non-infected healthy women. Additionally, microbiome and gene expression analyses were conducted in a subgrou

Impact of a Clinic- and Mail-Based Cervical Cancer Human Papillomavirus Self-Collect Screening Program.

Virtually all cervical cancers are caused by high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs), which can be accurately detected using deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing from cervical or vaginal samples. Patient vaginal HPV self-collection (HPV self-collect) presents new opportunities to expand access to cervical cancer screening, improve uptake, and reach underrepresented populations. An integrated health system in Washington State implemented a mail- and clinic-based HPV self-collect program. Researchers partnered with health system leaders and clinicians to evaluate program implementation. This repo
