Fetal Head Growth and Head Circumference at Birth in Children of Women with Psychotic Disorders and Population-Based Controls.

BACKGROUND: Children of parents with psychotic disorders have a ˃50% increased risk to develop mental health problems, and over 30% have developed severe mental illness by early adulthood. Aberrant brain development may underly this familial risk. We aimed to investigate differences in brain development, reflected in fetal head circumference (HC) growth trajectories and HC at birth, between children of women with psychotic disorders and population-based controls. STUDY DESIGN: We collected fetal ultrasonography assessments at 20, 30, and 36 weeks of gestational age (GA) from medical records o

Pediatric Insomnia.

Pediatric insomnia is a common condition that can significantly impact a patient's well-being. It typically involves difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. The prevalence of insomnia is notably higher among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Two commonly recognized subtypes of pediatric insomnia are behavioral insomnia and psychophysiological insomnia. Because clinical symptoms and physical examination findings are often subtle, pediatricians should be familiar with the diagnosis and management of insomnia. Pediatrician

Estimating the time course of biomarker changes in Alzheimer's disease.

Recent advancements in biomarkers have transformed Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis from being purely symptom-based to include biological criteria. With new treatments targeting the core biology of Alzheimer's disease, understanding the timeline of biological changes is crucial as the disease progresses over decades. Longitudinal data from amyloid-beta (Aβ) PET and cognitive tests [Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-cog)] from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (n = 1448) and BioFINDER (n = 2088) were used to st

Effects of traumatic stress on endothelial and cardiac autonomic functions.

Traumatic stress is a psychobiological response to an overwhelming life event that exceeds the individual's capacity to cope. Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to traumatic stress: whether or not it results in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to examine the relationship between trauma-related psychiatric symptoms and markers of endothelial and cardiac autonomic function. A list of potentially traumatic life events and the self-report PTSD Symptom Checklist-5 were administered to 132 adults. To evaluate the endotheli

Fronto-limbic emotional-processing markers signal risk of onset rather than risk of recurrence in mood disorders: Evidence from a longitudinal twin study.

AIMS: Mood disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD), are highly heritable and linked to fronto-limbic circuit dysfunction. This longitudinal fMRI study examined whether baseline responses of the amygdala, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC) evoked by facial emotional expressions predicted first-onset or recurrence of mood episodes over 7 years in monozygotic twins. METHODS: The sample comprised 68 unaffected twins (UT) without a history of mood disorders but varying familial risk, and 62 affected twins (AT) in remi

Neural effects of cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation over left supramarginal gyrus on cognitive empathy for pain.

Pain empathy refers to the ability to share and understand pain of others by observing others experiencing pain. Impaired pain empathy has been reported in mental disorders and chronic pain. The neural substrates underlying pain empathy remain poorly understood. We investigated brain activation associated with pain empathy by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) following single cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left supramarginal gyrus (SMG) in healthy adults. Twenty-six healthy adults received cathodal or sham tDCS over the left SMG. Task-based fM

Aperiodic EEG signatures: unveiling the interplay between APOE ε4 and mild cognitive impairment subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a cognitive decline syndrome in the elderly, often a precursor to dementia. It is a heterogeneous condition that can signal degenerative disorders like Alzheimer's or non-degenerative conditions such as vascular issues, depression, or poorly managed diabetes. Early detection of MCI is crucial for timely intervention, and differentiating its phenotypes helps in understanding its causes, progression, and treatment. EEG, which records brain electrical activity, consists of rhythmic and arrhythmic components. Examining these inherently overlapping EEG

Elevated Serum SIRT2 Is Associated With Rapid Progression and Cognitive Impairment in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) lacks reliable biomarkers to predict disease trajectories or guide therapeutic strategies. Sirtuin 2 (SIRT2), a NAD+-dependent deacetylase implicated in cytoskeletal destabilization and neuroinflammatory pathways in preclinical ALS models, represents a promising yet unvalidated biomarker candidate. We aimed to translate preclinical findings by validating SIRT2's role in ALS. METHODS: A cross-sectional cohort study was conducted, comparing serum SIRT2 levels, measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), between 182 ALS patients

High-intensity training vs. low-intensity training for patients with anxiety: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: This protocol was developed to describe the design of a randomised controlled trial that will examine the clinical efficacy of a 4-week comparison of high-intensity vs. low-intensity physical training for people suffering from anxiety. The hypothesis is that the high-intensity group will have greater benefit in terms of reduced anxiety symptoms, improved physical health (blood pressure) and better adherence. METHODS: Thirty adults aged 18 to 70 years diagnosed with an anxiety disorder will be recruited for this study. Participants will be randomised into an intervention group (hig

Using Plasma Amyloid Beta Oligomer to Screen in Alzheimer's Disease: A Pilot Study.

Previous studies have shown that plasma amyloid-beta oligomers (AβOs), the toxic form of amyloid-beta (Aβ), are a critical issue in the development or worsening of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and can be regarded as a blood marker for screening in dementia. We examined plasma AβOs with their related biomarkers in a case-control study to clarify these issues. A total of 16 patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia (AD) and 16 cognitively normal controls (NCs) were recruited to compare their plasma biomarkers, AβO, Aβ1-40, and Aβ1-42, also referring to other parameters like APOE ε4 status, Clinic
