BACKGROUND: Symphysis fundal height (SFH) measurement is commonly practiced primarily to detect fetal intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Undiagnosed IUGR may lead to fetal death as well as increase perinatal mortality and morbidity.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to compare SFH measurement with serial ultrasound measurement of fetal parameters or clinical palpation to detect abnormal fetal growth (IUGR and large-for-gestational age), and improving perinatal outcome.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (14 July 2015) and

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth characteristics are used to identify influences of several maternal characteristics and to identify individuals at increased risk of adverse outcomes. The extent to which fetal growth characteristics track in different trimesters is not known.
METHODS: In a population-based prospective cohort study among 8636 pregnant women, we examined the extent to which fetal growth characteristics track, are influenced by maternal socio-demographic and lifestyle related determinants and are associated with birth outcomes. Fetal growth was assessed in each trimester and at birth.

BACKGROUND: The presence of a single umbilical artery (SUA) is a fetal soft marker of congenital abnormalities. Among the most common related malformations, there are cardiological, nephrourological and digestive anomalies, most of which are considered to have a vascular etiology. There is an association between increased incidence of intrauterine growth retardation and adverse perinatal indicators, but whether this association is due to related anomalies or isolated SUA (iSUA) is controvisal.
METHODS: We reviewed 96 cases of iSUA and non-isolated SUA (niSUA), diagnosed in a period of two yea

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to measure early fetal growth velocity and to correlate this with the birth weight, gestational age at delivery, and with the incidence of adverse pregnancy outcomes specifically preeclampsia and perinatal mortality.
METHODS: A data based prospective observational study, wherein sonographic biometry data and specific pregnancy outcome related data were collected from pregnant women's records, starting soon after their first antenatal visit. Early fetal growth velocity was measured using BPD growth between 11 and 14 weeks scan and anomaly scan and standardizing this by Z s

BACKGROUND: Augmentation index (AI) is calculated from the central arterial pressure or pulse waveform and known as a parameter to evaluate arterial vascular function in adults. Patients with deterioration of peripheral circulation will demonstrate increased AI values as well as those with cardiovascular risks. It is because increased AI is caused by the early timing of the reflection wave from the periphery. On the other hand, in fetuses, although arterial pressure waveforms are not available, pulse waveforms of fetal descending aorta are recordable by using an echo-tracking system. Therefore

AIM: To investigate whether absent or reversed end-diastolic flow in the umbilical artery (AREDF) is associated with neonatal mortality, morbidity or long-term neurocognitive outcome in extremely preterm infants exposed to preeclampsia or intrauterine growth restriction.
METHODS: Prenatal Doppler data were retrospectively collected for liveborn infants with gestational age (GA) <28 weeks or birth weight (BW) <1000 g, born small for gestational age (SGA- BW <5th percentile for GA) or of mothers with preeclampsia at the four largest university hospitals in Norway during 1999-2000. PURPOSE: To evaluate whether patients with isolated elevation of umbilical artery (UA) systolic/diastolic (S/D) ratio are at increased risk for adverse perinatal outcome.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of 330 patients who underwent routine evaluation at our maternal fetal medicine center. We regularly perform UA S/D ratio analysis with every third trimester sonogram. All identified patients were included and divided into four groups based on estimated fetal weight (EFW) and UA S/D ratio. Perinatal outcome was compared between the groups.
RESULTS: Regardless of the EFW, fetuses

Fetal growth restriction is one of the greatest risk factors for stillbirth. This pilot cohort study examined whether rapid placental volume (PlaV) calculation at 11 to 13 + 6 weeks can predict the small for gestational age (cSGA) baby. Women with singleton pregnancies were recruited (N = 145), a static three-dimensional (3-D) volume was captured, and the placental volume was computed using a semi-automated technique. Regression analysis explored the relationships between customized birth weight, placental quotient (PQ), standardized placental volume (sPlaV), and other predictors of SGA (inclu

OBJECTIVE: To identify the most accurate formula to estimate fetal weight (EFW) from ultrasound parameters in severe preterm preeclampsia.
METHODS: In a prospective study, serial ultrasound assessments were performed in 123 women with severe preterm preeclampsia. The EFW, calculated for 111 live born, normal, singleton fetuses within 7 days of delivery using 38 published formulae, was compared to the actual birth weight (ABW). Accuracy was assessed by correlations, mean (absolute and signed) (%) errors, % correct predictions within 5-20% of ABW and limits of agreement.
RESULTS: Accuracy was

OBJECTIVE: In small-for-gestational-age neonates, parental and fetal characteristics can be used to distinguish between constitutionally small size and growth restriction, which is associated with a higher risk of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to quantify relationships of parental and fetal characteristics with fetal ultrasound measurements.
METHODS: The EDEN mother-child cohort included 2002 pregnant women with singleton pregnancies attending one of two university hospitals. Data from two routine ultrasound examinations for fetal biometry were recorded, at 20-25 and 30-3

BACKGROUND: During a period of 12 months 7 newborns with a partially severe fetopathy caused most probably by maternal sartan-intake in pregnancy were treated in 5 German teaching hospitals. Sartans antagonize the effect of angiotensin II at the AT1-receptor and are used to treat arterial hypertension.
METHOD: We presented 2 cases at the yearly GNPI meeting 2010 and we were informed about similar cases in other German teaching hospitals which we brought together in this publication.
RESULTS: In the presented cases, maternal sartan intake was noticed at different times in pregnancy and was in

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the likelihood of identifying small for gestational age (SGA) neonates prenatally (below the 10th percentile for gestational age).
METHODS: On admission for delivery, the charts of singletons with reliable gestational age (GA) were reviewed to determine whether intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) was suspected, clinically or sonographically. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used with the accurate identification of SGA as the dependent variable and 13 independent variables.
RESULTS: Over 10 months, 1502 pregnant women met the inclusion criteria and 16% of n

An important advance in obstetric medicine will be the improved ability to identify pathologic states of fetal growth, determine their consequences, and implement appropriate interventions. In response to utero-placental insufficiency and under nutrition, the fetus makes physiologic, metabolic, and hormonal adaptations which influence growth, including reducing metabolic dependence on glucose and increasing oxygenation of other nutritional substrates including amino acids and lactate. These endocrine changes combined with reduced nutrient supply divert amino acids from protein synthesis and ti

Accurate gestational dating is one of the most important assessments obstetrical providers make in pregnancy, given that all of the various management strategies are dependent on knowing where the patient is in gestation. In addition to traditional biometry, ancillary biometric and nonbiometric measurements can help narrow the biologic variability between fetuses. Moreover, one can employ these nontraditional measurements both in late gestation to assist in determining appropriate gestational age and fetal lung maturity, and in other specific clinical situations-such as oligohydramnios, in whi
