Differential methylation in inflammation and type 2 diabetes genes in siblings born before and after maternal bariatric surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Siblings born before (BMS) and after (AMS) maternal biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) show differences in the methylome. The objective was to use a sibling-pair design to examine the effects from interpregnancy weight loss as a consequence of maternal bariatric surgery, other than BPD, on the methylome comparing BMS and AMS. METHODS: Women with at least one child born before and one after bariatric surgery were identified in Swedish national registers. Whole blood samples from BMS (N = 31) and AMS (N = 31) siblings were collected for epigenetic methylation analysis while maternal inf

Genetic and environmental determinants of violence risk in psychotic disorders: a multivariate quantitative genetic study of 1.8 million Swedish twins and siblings.

Patients diagnosed with psychotic disorders (for example, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) have elevated risks of committing violent acts, particularly if they are comorbid with substance misuse. Despite recent insights from quantitative and molecular genetic studies demonstrating considerable pleiotropy in the genetic architecture of these phenotypes, there is currently a lack of large-scale studies that have specifically examined the aetiological links between psychotic disorders and violence. Using a sample of all Swedish individuals born between 1958 and 1989 (n=3 332 101), we identifie

Do the causes of infertility play a direct role in the aetiology of preterm birth?

BACKGROUND: It is well established that singletons born of assisted reproductive technology are at higher risk of preterm birth and other adverse outcomes. What remains unclear is whether the increased risk is attributable to the effects of the treatment alone or whether the underlying causes of infertility also play a role. The aim of this study was to examine whether any of the six categories of causes of infertility were associated with a direct effect on preterm birth using causal mediation analysis. METHODS: We assembled a hospital-based cohort of births delivered at a large tertiary car

Twins' risk of childhood asthma mediated by gestational age and birthweight.

BACKGROUND: Children born with low gestational age (GA) or low birthweight (BW) are at increased risk of asthma. Twins as compared to singletons are on average more likely to be born with lower GA and BW and have been hypothesized to comprise a high-risk population for asthma. Many previous studies have not accounted for potential confounders or mediators. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between twinship and childhood asthma or early life wheeze and identify potential mediators, such as GA/BW. METHODS: The study population consisted of two cohorts including all children born in Swe

Perinatal outcome of singleton versus twin late preterm infants: do twins mature faster than singletons?

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether as a result of an assumed advanced maturation late preterm twin infants have a more favorable perinatal outcome than singleton late preterm infants. METHODS: Over a 36-month period (from September 2011 to September 2014), 277 late preterm infants (153 from singleton and 124 from twin pregnancies) were hospitalised in NICU, University Hospital Center "Sisters of Mercy" Zagreb, Croatia, and were retrospectively studied by review of maternal and neonatal charts for gestational age, sex, birth weight, mode of delivery, 5-min Apgar score and for several outcome vari

[Factors affecting live birth sex ratio in assisted reproductive technology procedures].

OBJECTIVE: To study the factors that affect the sex ratio of live births in procedures of assisted reproductive technology (ART). METHODS: The clinical data were collected from 4348 IVF-ET/freeze-thawed embryo transfer cycles that led to the birth of 5606 babies of known gender between 2008 and 2014. We assessed the impact of maternal age, paternal age, insemination method, the type of embryo transferred, stage of embryo transferred, single and twin births, previous abortion following ART, and cause of infertility on the sex ratio of the live births. RESULTS: The total cohort included 3019 m

Higher Prevalence of Left-Handedness in Twins? Not After Controlling Birth Time Confounders.

Pregnancy- and birth-related factors may have an effect on handedness. Compared with singletons, twins have a lower birth weight, shorter gestational age, and are at higher risk for birth complications. We tested whether the prevalence of left-handedness is higher among twins than singletons, and if so, whether that difference is fully explained by pregnancy and birth-related differences between twins and singletons. We analyzed Finnish population-based datasets; included were 8,786 twins and 5,892 singletons with information on birth weight (n = 12,381), Apgar scores (n = 11,129), and gestati

Cancer risks in twins and singletons from twin and non-twin families.

The unique intrauterine environment has been proposed to put twins at increased risk of certain cancers compared to singletons, still large population comparisons have generally indicated lower risks in twins. To improve the understanding of potential twin influence on cancer we compared twins to their singletons siblings, to target a unique twinning influence. Singletons from twin families were contrasted to singletons from non-twin families to further capture potential twin family influence on risk of cancer. Family relations were identified using the Swedish Multi-Generation Register. Among

Risk of Preterm Birth According to Maternal and Paternal Country of Birth: A Population-Based Study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the co-contribution of maternal and paternal country of origin to preterm birth, and the differences in PTB rates between immigrants giving birth in Canada and those giving birth in their country of origin. METHODS: Using a population-based study for all of Ontario, we included 1 200 864 singleton and twin livebirths from 2002 to 2011. The risk of PTB in infants of immigrant parents from the same country was compared to those whose parents were both Canadian-born. Logistic regression analysis adjusted for maternal and paternal age, parity, marital status, income, infant

Trends in perinatal health after assisted reproduction: a Nordic study from the CoNARTaS group.

STUDY QUESTIONS: Has the perinatal outcome of children conceived after assisted reproductive technology (ART) improved over time? SUMMARY ANSWER: The perinatal outcomes in children born after ART have improved over the last 20 years, mainly due to the reduction of multiple births. WHAT IS KNOWN AND WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: A Swedish study has shown a reduction in unwanted outcomes over time in children conceived after ART. Our analyses based on data from more than 92 000 ART children born in four Nordic countries confirm these findings. STUDY DESIGN: Nordic population-based matched cohort stud

Australian national birthweight percentiles by sex and gestational age for twins, 2001-2010.

BACKGROUND: Birthweight remains one of the strongest predictors of perinatal mortality and disability. Birthweight percentiles form a reference that allows the detection of neonates at higher risk of neonatal and postneonatal morbidity. The aim of the study is to present updated national birthweight percentiles by gestational age for male and female twins born in Australia. METHODS: Population data were extracted from the Australian National Perinatal Data Collection for twins born in Australia between 2001 and 2010. A total of 43,833 women gave birth to 87,666 twins in Australia which were i

Co-occurrence of IBS and symptoms of anxiety or depression, among Norwegian twins, is influenced by both heredity and intrauterine growth.

BACKGROUND: Environmental and genetic factors contribute to variation in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), anxiety and depression. Comorbidity between these disorders is high. A previous investigation of our population-based twin cohort revealed that low birth weight increased the risk for development of IBS, with environmental influences in utero as the most relevant contributing factor. We hypothesise that both intrauterine and genetic factors influence the co-occurrence of IBS and symptoms of anxiety and depression. METHODS: A postal questionnaire sent to 12700 Norwegian twins born between 1

Functional brain maturation of prematurely born, growth discordant monochorionic twins assessed by aEEG.

The amplitude-integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) is a simple and convenient tool for brain function monitoring. It is being more widely used in monitoring high risk neonates in neonatal intensive care units. Normal values and patterns for aEEG activity in preterm infants are still being developing. Here we report the functional brain maturation of preterm twin siblings with aEEG who were severely affected by fetal growth discordance. The aEEG records of growth retarded twin was compared with her appropriate for gestational age sibling in order to see if there is also a developmental discor

New ATP-binding cassette A3 mutation causing surfactant metabolism dysfunction pulmonary type 3.

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) may occur in term and near-term infants because of mutations in surfactant-related genes. ATP-binding cassette A3 (ABCA3), a phospholipid carrier specifically expressed in the alveolar epithelium, is the most frequently involved protein. We report the case of a couple of late-preterm fraternal twin infants of opposite sex carrying the same compound heterozygous ABCA3 mutations, one of which has never been previously reported, with different disease severity, suggesting variable penetrance or sex-related differences. ABCA3 deficiency should be considered in t
