IMPORTANCE: Adults born very preterm and/or with very low birth weight (VP or VLBW; <32 weeks' gestation and/or <1500 g birth weight) are at increased risk of experiencing wealth and social relationship difficulties, yet many achieve positive outcomes in these domains. Following the bioecological framework, early factors relating to person, process, and context may shape long-term positive functioning, but few studies capture this heterogeneity in VP or VLBW individuals, and little is known about the childhood factors promoting positive functioning in adulthood.
OBJECTIVE: To identify distinc

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the association between positive life orientation (PLO) and blood pressure (BP) in two Finnish cohorts of older adults born 20 years apart.
METHODS: Seventy-year-old residents of Turku, Finland, were surveyed in 1990 (1920-born Turku Older Adults Study [TUVA] cohort) and in 2010 (1940-born New Turku Older Adults Study [UTUVA] cohort). PLO was derived from questionnaire items capturing life satisfaction, feeling needed, future plans, zest for life and frequency of depressive feelings and loneliness. Associations between PLO and BP were examined using analysi

PURPOSE: Schizophrenia is a psychiatric condition characterized by different physical liabilities, including reduced height, increased medical comorbidity, and reduced life expectancy. Schizophrenia stems from gene-environment interactions, with winter birth being a widely replicated environmental risk factor associated with more severe outcomes. We aim to investigate the association between winter birth and height in individuals with schizophrenia.
METHODS: 15181 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and with recorded height and date of birth, comprising 7414 males and 7767 females from t

INTRODUCTION: . The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in French Guiana (11.6%) is marked by a significant proportion of type 2 diabetes (T2D). The high level of poverty and ethnic diversity of the French Guiana population may limit access to care, delay diabetes management and increase the risk of complications. Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) teams have been implemented since 2017 to improve diabetes care in the region. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of DSME on glycemic control in patients living with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in French Guiana.
METHODS: . - This cross-sectional

BACKGROUND: The global rate of cesarean section (CS) births is increasing. Growing evidence suggests that CS birth may alter the gut microbiota (i.e., dysbiosis) and increase the risk of immune and metabolic disorders, although confounding factors make causality difficult to establish. The studies presented here aimed to investigate the causal relationship between CS-induced gut dysbiosis and obesity in a diet-induced obese mouse model and explore potential microbiota-targeted therapies.
RESULTS: In the first study, male C57BL/6 mice were delivered via CS or vaginally (VD) and fed a high- or

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a perinatal social determinant of health (SDoH) risk score for predicting neurodevelopmental outcomes in infants born preterm.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study of 395 infants born at ≤32 weeks' gestation recruited from 5 level III/IV NICUs in Greater Cincinnati (2016-2019); 328 (83%) with complete data were analyzed. Five prenatal social risk factors-maternal age, education, household income, employment, and family structure-were combined into composite SDoH scores using supervised and unsupervised machine learning. Outcomes were Bayley-III cognitive,

This narrative review aims to explore why ethnic inequalities in preterm birth and maternal mortality are present, specifically among Black and South Asian women within the United Kingdom. We are particularly focusing on Leicester and Leicestershire. This review aims to address the underlying reasons as to why these inequalities are present. Leicester has a high proportion of ethnic minorities compared with the rest of the United Kingdom, making it an important context for exploring disparities in maternity outcomes. A structured search in Medline (OVID) was conducted using keywords and MeSH

Anti-Müllerian hormone is a promising fertoprotective agent, demonstrating particularly strong efficacy against doxorubicin-induced ovarian toxicity. However, the impact of chemotherapy on the uterus, and the potential benefits of anti-Müllerian hormone in this context, remain poorly understood. In this study, we characterized doxorubicin-induced uterine damage and assessed the fertoprotective effect of anti-Müllerian hormone co-treatment in mice. Acutely, doxorubicin treatment caused the accumulation of DNA damage in multiple uterine cell-types, including the myometrium, as evidenced by both

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organisation, antenatal care should ensure continuity, respect and evidence-based education. Fear of childbirth (FOC), affecting 20-40% of women globally, contributes to prolonged labour, higher caesarean rates and negative birth experiences. In Türkiye, where midwifery-led support remains limited, this study examined how pregnant women's health literacy influences empowerment and FOC within antenatal care and evaluated the effectiveness of the midwifery-led continuity-of-care (MLCC) model.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental study with a comparative group

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth remains the leading risk factor for perinatal mortality and morbidity. Infants born preterm miss critical periods of development, placing them at increased risk for a range of neurodevelopmental, motor, and sensory complications. These complex health outcomes are further compounded by biological, behavioral, and social factors, with socioeconomically disadvantaged populations disproportionally affected. As rates of preterm birth rise, and survival improves at increasingly earlier gestational ages, the demand for comprehensive and accessible care for this high-risk pop

BACKGROUND: Evidence on how poverty and social determinants influence adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in the UK is limited. While ethnicity and area-level deprivation are well described, fewer studies examine the cumulative impact of poverty-related factors such as low income, employment insecurity, housing, and access to social support.
METHODS: We analysed 67,308 pregnancies from the eLIXIR cohort using linked NHS records. Social determinants were defined using the WHO framework as structural (ethnicity, migration status, area deprivation) and intermediary (housing, employment, fina

BACKGROUND: International evidence suggests that reducing user costs increases maternity care utilization but not necessarily care quality, underscoring the need for transparent, comparable measurement. In Japan, evidence-based maternity care for low-risk childbirth has not been systematically evaluated, and limited claims-data capture hinders assessment, benchmarking, and sustained quality improvement. We aimed to explore how determinants (facilitators and barriers) of implementing a multifaceted quality improvement intervention for low-risk childbirth emerge and evolve over time.

BACKGROUND: Isodicentric Y chromosomes [idic(Y)] are frequently detected in patients with disorders of sex development (DSDs). However, prenatal cases are rarely reported. We performed comprehensive prenatal diagnostic evaluations in three fetuses with mosaic idic(Y) and followed up on pregnancy outcomes to explore the genotype-phenotype correlation.
METHODS: Amniotic fluid cells from three fetuses were subjected to karyotyping and chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), with confirmation by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). Subsequently, parental

BACKGROUND: Indigenous communities in Canada (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples) have distinct traditional knowledge and practices for pregnancy and birth, and these have sustained healthy and thriving Indigenous communities for millennia. Indigenous midwives historically held a leading role as primary providers of sexual and reproductive healthcare. However, colonial practices severely disrupted the role of Indigenous midwives and the transfer of their knowledge from generation to generation. The obstetric evacuation policy in Canada requires people who live in rural and remote location

Objectives: Preterm infants confront multiple coexistent health risks and may not receive human milk (HM), which contains human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), among other biologically active, beneficial components. 2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL) is the most abundant HMO in most HM. Interventional studies of formula with added HMOs have demonstrated multiple beneficial outcomes in healthy, term infants. Methods: This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study (NCT03306316) evaluated the effect of a 2'-FL supplement on growth, tolerance, and neurobehavior, as assessed by the Neonatal Int

Hereditary Multiple Osteochondromas (HMO) is a rare, pediatric skeletal disorder characterized by osteochondromas that form along the growth plates. These benign tumors can cause skeletal deformities, joint dysfunction, chronic pain and other health problems. Most HMO patients are born with a heterozygous mutation in EXT1 or EXT2 that encode Golgi enzymes responsible for heparan sulfate synthesis. However, prior studies have established that these mutations alone are insufficient to trigger osteochondroma formation, but additional genetic changes are needed. Loss-of-heterozygosity (LOH) has be
