Rothia similimucilaginosa sp. nov., isolated from the human nasal cavity.

Four strains of a Gram-stain-positive, coccoid, catalase-positive, non-motile bacterium were recovered from nasal lavage samples collected from children in Wisconsin during the Spring of 2008. These strains, designated RSM42T, RSM292, RSM386 and RSM407, were subjected to a comprehensive biochemical and polyphasic taxonomic investigation. Despite the novel bacterium sharing 99.6% 16S rRNA gene sequence identity with Rothia mucilaginosa 5762/67T, BLAST+ average nucleotide identity, MUMmer3 average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values of 91.3%, 91.9% and 43.1%, respectivel

Molecular Gardening for Neuroinflammation via Nose-to-Brain Delivery: A Ca2+ Responsive DNA Nanocage-Hydrogel System With Neuron Targeting and STING Inhibiting.

Intranasal administration offers a rapid and non-invasive route to deliver therapeutics directly from the nasal cavity into the brain for treating central nervous system (CNS) disorders. However, its efficacy is hampered by limited CNS targeting efficiency and rapid clearance in the nasal microenvironment. Here, a Ca2+ responsive alginate hydrogel drug delivery system (namely SA@TSCC) encapsulating a STING inhibitor within a neuronal targeting aptamer-modified DNA nanocage for intranasal administration is developed. SA@TSCC demonstrates enhanced nasal retention, sustained release, and efficien

Impact of arc therapy in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) on dose uniformity and motion robustness.

Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to evaluate the dose distribution characteristics and motion robustness of fixed-angle versus arc irradiation techniques in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), using a head phantom. For fixed-angle irradiation, an anterior-posterior (AP) beam was oriented towards the facial plane. In contrast, the arc technique involved a continuous 180° rotation, from the left to the right, around the central axis traversing the face. The target was located in the nasal cavity region. Results demonstrated the dosimetric superiority of the arc technique, which increased

Correlation of Promontory Vibration and Sound Emission Recorded from the Skin Surface in Bone Conduction Stimulation.

PURPOSE: Sound pressure recordings at different positions at the head such as ear canal, nasal cavity, or on the skin are effective tools to verify, fit, or follow up the output of bone conduction devices (BCDs) intra- and post-operatively. Here, we investigated the possibility of using a surface microphone (SM) as a non-invasive alternative to laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) measuring cochlear promontory (CP) vibrations in human heads. METHODS: A percutaneous BCD (Ponto system) was implanted at the standard position in five human (four males/one female) cadaver heads (ten ears). CP vibration

Minimally invasive surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion: are pterygomaxillary disjunction and nasal septum disinsertion necessary?

This retrospective multicentre study investigated the effects of pterygomaxillary disjunction (PD) and nasal septum disinsertion (NSD) by comparing two minimally invasive bone-anchored surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion techniques in adult patients. The analysis focused on their impact on the nasal septum and the extent of palatal expansion. Forty patients were allocated to two groups: G1 (without PD and NSD) and G2 (with PD and NSD). The transverse opening pattern in the anterior and posterior regions, as well as changes in the position of the nasal septum, were evaluated using cone

Exploring the chicken respiratory microbiome: a comprehensive meta-analysis of factors shaping chicken respiratory microbiota.

Poultry is the main source of meat production worldwide. The respiratory microbiota of chickens plays a critical role in avian health and disease prevention. To better understand its composition and dynamics, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis focusing on factors such as age, breed, SPF status, and respiratory organs. We collected 16S rRNA data from 13 different studies available on NCBI’s PubMed and Scopus, including data on the nasal cavity, trachea, and lungs from healthy chickens. All the data were processed using QIIME2 and then analysed together. Metadata from each study was comp

Exploring the impact of oral health and vaccination on pneumonia-causing bacteria: insights from predictive modeling.

Nursing home acquired pneumonia (NHAP) is a leading cause of mortality in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), primarily resulting from the macro-aspiration of opportunistic pathogens colonizing the upper respiratory tract. While multiple bacterial species can cause NHAP, Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common, and pneumococcal vaccination remains the primary preventative measure. Oral hygiene interventions are also increasingly explored as a complementary strategy to reduce pathogen colonization, although their reported effectiveness has been mixed, likely due to differences in how individ

Targeting the brain through the nose: Advances in polymeric nanoparticle delivery for schizophrenia.

Intranasal delivery of polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) offers a promising approach for improving drug delivery to the central nervous system (CNS), particularly for treating schizophrenia. This delivery method enables direct nose-to-brain transport via olfactory and trigeminal pathways, bypassing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and increasing therapeutic agent bioavailability in brain tissue while reducing systemic exposure and adverse effects. PNPs fabricated from natural polymers (chitosan, alginate, gelatin) and synthetic polymers (PLGA, polycaprolactone) provide controlled and sustained drug

Endonasal endoscopic surgery for residual or recurrent craniopharyngiomas: A propensity score-matched cohort study.

Craniopharyngiomas (CPs) frequently recur even after gross total resection (GTR), posing substantial challenges to long-term disease control. Endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) has become a widely adopted approach for CPs, yet its efficacy for recurrent or residual lesions remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of repeat EES for recurrent or residual CPs by comparing surgical, functional, and long-term outcomes with those of primary EES. We retrospectively reviewed CP patients who underwent EES at our center between June 2012 and December 2024. Patients wer

Transnasal implants in the nasal cavity and sphenoid sinus for minimally invasive deep brain stimulation: measurement of electric field in cadavers.

OBJECTIVE: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is increasingly used in treating motor disorders, neurodegenerative conditions, and mental health conditions. However, treatments are limited to the most severe cases due to the invasiveness of the surgical procedure. We propose stimulating ventral brain areas using electrodes inserted through the nose and placed in contact with the inferior skull base bones, under the olfactory cleft and in the sphenoid sinus. METHODS: We designed a compact, low-power stimulation implant that fits in the sphenoid sinus and tested the implant insertion and operation in

Nasal epithelial zonation and turbinate morphology in infant common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).

The nasal cavity plays a critical role in respiration and olfaction, functions supported by its turbinate architecture and epithelial distribution. The turbinates-primarily composed of the maxilloturbinate and ethmoturbinate-expand the intranasal surface area and provide a structural foundation for epithelial types. Although the common marmoset(Callithrix jacchus) is widely used as a nonhuman primate model in translational research, postnatal nasal turbinate structure and epithelial zonation have not been fully characterized. In this study, we compared turbinate morphology and epithelial zonat

Impact of Maxillary Palatal Expansion on Airway Dimensions and Sleep-Disordered Breathing.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent disorder characterized by repeated upper airway collapse during sleep, significantly impacting quality of life. Orthodontists are increasingly recognized for their role in screening and managing anatomical factors contributing to airway obstruction. One such intervention is rapid maxillary expansion (RME), originally developed to address transverse maxillary deficiencies but now also studied for its influence on nasal and oropharyngeal airway dimensions. This literature review evaluates the effects of maxillary palatal expansion on airway volume and

Agreement Between Acoustic Rhinometry and Computed Tomography Nasal Cross-Sectional Areas Perpendicular to the Direction of the Airflow.

Background/Objectives: To thoroughly compare acoustic rhinometry (AR) with computed tomography (CT) cross-sectional areas that are approximately perpendicular to the direction of the nasal airflow (CT-CSA). Methods: We retrospectively examined subjects scheduled for functional nasal surgery, along with preoperative CT and AR. CT-CSAs were assessed in several nasal planes in the first 5 cm of the nasal airway. Area sizes and distances of the CT-CSAs from the columella served to create a CT curve analogous to the AR curve. AR curves were digitized. We examined the correlation and agreement (usin

From niche to niche: investigating microbial communities and their specialised metabolite gene clusters in human microbiomes.

Diverse microbial communities within the human microbiome perform vital functions which influence both health and disease in hosts. Specialized metabolites produced by microbes via biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) drive ecological interactions and offer possibilities for therapeutic application. The biosynthetic capabilities of microorganisms present in human microbiomes are still mostly unexplored despite metagenomics advancements. The study examines the variety of microbial communities and BGC locations through metagenomic data from 1,191 samples across eight human microbiomes taken from th

Narrow-width surface acoustic wave device-driven olfactory epithelium-targeted intranasal atomization.

Intranasal administration offers a minimally invasive route for drug delivery to the brain by bypassing the blood-brain barrier compared to conventional intravenous and intrathecal administration. However, conventional intranasal delivery devices have difficulty accessing the entire olfactory epithelium region. This is because the olfactory epithelium is located deep in the upper nasal cavity. Therefore, the development of an atomization device capable of delivering aerosols across the whole olfactory epithelium is required to achieve direct access to the brain. Here, we propose an olfactory e
