Deposition of Occupational Aerosol Particles in a Three-Dimensional Adult Nasal Cavity Model: An Experimental Study.

Background: Occupational exposure to aerosol particles can pose a substantial health risk. The study aimed to characterise the deposition of occupationally relevant aerosols in a 3D anatomical adult nasal cavity model under steady and unsteady flows. Materials: The deposition of aerosolised wheat flour, pine wood sanding dust, carbon black, and Arizona Test Dust A3 was quantified under steady flows (5, 7.5, and 20 L/min per nostril) and an unsteady breathing pattern generated by the commercial breathing simulator. Image analysis with custom software quantified the area covered by deposited par

Pyrogallol B-ring enhances catechin binding to the SARS-CoV-2 spike receptor-binding domain to inhibit interaction with ACE2.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infects host cells through binding of the spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD) to the human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor. In this study, the antiviral activity of 14 catechin derivatives was evaluated using a pseudovirus assay that emulates spike-mediated cell fusion. Of these, gallocatechin gallate, epigallocatechin gallate, epigallocatechin 3-(3″-O-methyl) gallate, and epigallocatechin exhibit strong inhibitory effects on infection. A structural comparison of the compounds revealed that catechins with a pyrogallol-type B-ring

Effect of Preoperative Superselective Embolization in the Resection of Hypervascular Tumors of the Central Nervous System, Neck, and Nasal Cavity.

Background Hypervascular head and neck tumors, such as paragangliomas, esthesioneuroblastomas, and juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas (JNA), are surgically challenging due to their rich vascular supply and proximity to critical structures. Preoperative superselective embolization may optimize surgical outcomes by reducing intraoperative bleeding and facilitating safe resections. Methods We conducted a retrospective case-control study of patients with hypervascular tumors of the central nervous system, neck, and nasal cavity treated between 2019 and 2024 at a single tertiary neurosurgical ce

The effects of certification of head and neck cancer centers on the survival of patients with a head and neck cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck cancers represent a heterogeneous group of tumor in terms of both, their entity and location. This includes cancers of the lip, oral cavitiy, pharynx (epi-, oro- and hypopharynx), larynx, nasal cavity/ sinus and salivary gland. Additionally, they are associated with functional impairments that place highly specific demands on treating practitioners. Since the introduction of the German National Cancer Plan in 2008, cancer treatment has been aligned with the latest scientific findings through evidence-based guidelines. Meanwhile, treatment courses and outcomes have b

Computational fluid dynamics analysis of the respiratory function of orthodontic patients. A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been increasingly applied to simulate airflow behavior in the upper airway, enabling the assessment of airflow-related changes following orthodontic and orthognathic treatments that modify airway dimensions and shape. Such changes may influence ventilation and, potentially, the risk of sleep-disordered breathing. Therefore, the aim of this scoping review was to map and characterize the use of CFD to assess upper airway airflow and ventilation in orthodontic patients treated with or without orthognathic surgery. METHODS: A literature search was

Influence of Hypoxia, Dehydration and Salinity on Survival of Orthohalarachne Marine Mite Larvae: Limits to Dispersion.

Orthohalarachne attenuata and O. diminuata mites are parasites of the respiratory system of Pinnipeds. During hosts' dives, mites must cope with changing conditions of oxygen availability in the nasal cavity. Adults and nymphs live inside the host, but larvae are active and responsible for colonizing new hosts. Hence, larvae are also exposed to environmental conditions with variable temperature and pressure, as well as to dehydration and changes in salinity. Although both species live within the respiratory tract of hosts, adults attach to different sections. Also, larvae have differential the

The possible effect of forceful eye closure and eye opening on nasal valve cross-sectional area during endoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Nasal endoscopy is a routine procedure in the otolaryngology clinic, yet intra-procedural discomfort is common and may deter future examinations. Preliminary observations suggest that eye closure may affect the nasal valve cross-sectional area, which, in turn, has the potential to impact discomfort during endoscopy, as it is the narrowest part of the nasal passageway. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of forceful eye opening and closure on the nasal valve’s cross-sectional area using rigid video-endoscopy and digital image analysis. METHODS: A prospective pilot case series study. N

Regional Nasal Drug Deposition in Pediatric vs. Adult Models: In vitro Insights into User Technique and Breathing Patterns Sensitivity.

PURPOSE: Although in vitro studies recommended for establishing bioequivalence of locally acting nasal suspension products provide useful information regarding product performance, currently they are not designed to fully account for variability introduced by patient-specific factors such as administration technique and breathing patterns. This limitation, combined with ethical and practical challenges in conducting pediatric clinical trials, creates a knowledge gap in understanding age-related differences in nasal drug delivery. METHODS: Anatomically realistic in vitro nasal models represent
