Infraorbital Ethmoid Cells (Haller Cells) and Their Role in Chronic Rhinosinusitis: An Evidence-Based Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Haller cells (HCs), infraorbital pneumatization of the anterior ethmoidal air cells, are anatomical variants frequently located adjacent to the maxillary sinus ostium. Their presence has been hypothesized to interfere with mucociliary drainage and contribute to the pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Despite numerous imaging-based investigations, the etiological role of Haller cells in CRS remains uncertain. The aim of this meta-analysis is to highlight the association between HC and CRS using data derived from Computed Tomography (CT) and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Microbial Diversity in Odontogenic Sinusitis: Next-Generation Sequencing Versus Culture.

BackgroundOdontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is a common cause of unilateral infectious maxillary sinusitis but is frequently underdiagnosed due to nonspecific symptoms, subtle dental findings on imaging, and limitations of traditional bacterial cultures-particularly for anaerobic organisms. Next-generation DNA sequencing (NGS) may enhance detection of odontogenic bacteria.ObjectiveThis study compared bacterial detection between standard cultures versus NGS in patients with confirmed ODS.MethodsTwenty consecutive adults with confirmed ODS were enrolled. Maxillary sinus purulence was collected endosco

Clinical Feasibility of Autogenous Lateral Sinus Wall Bone Plate for Ridge Augmentation: A Surgical Innovation.

This technical innovation describes a surgical approach that reuses autogenous bone plates harvested from the lateral maxillary sinus wall during lateral sinus floor elevation for simultaneous ridge augmentation. The technique integrates sinus augmentation and bone harvesting within a single operative field, eliminating the need for a secondary donor site. The harvested bone plate is polished and fixed to form a rigid cortical shell, following the principles of the bone shell technique. Clinical application in a preliminary case series demonstrated predictable bone regeneration, with horizonta

A Huge Intraosseous Hemangioma in the Maxillary Sinus Misdiagnosed as Osteosarcoma: A Case Report.

Intraosseous hemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumors that account for less than 1% of all bone tumors and are exceptionally uncommon in the sinonasal region. Their aggressive-appearing radiological features may mimic those of malignant bone tumors, creating diagnostic challenges. An 18-year-old man presented with right-sided nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Imaging revealed a large destructive mass in the right maxillary sinus that was suspicious for malignancy, including osteosarcoma. Endoscopic biopsy showed nonspecific benign osseous features that were discordant with the radiological f

Giant Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Lacrimal Sac Initially Suspected to Represent a Sinonasal Malignancy 16 Years After Dacryocystorhinostomy.

Background and Clinical Significance: Tumors of the lacrimal drainage system are rare but clinically important diagnostic pitfalls because they may mimic benign lacrimal drainage obstruction, chronic dacryocystitis, or sinonasal disease. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) in this region is exceptionally rare, and delayed recognition may allow progressive extension into adjacent structures. Case Presentation: A 51-year-old woman presented with left nasal obstruction 16 years after external dacryocystorhinostomy for presumed lacrimal drainage obstruction. Examination showed a firm left lacrimal sac mass,

Incidental finding of segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia during orthodontic treatment: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Segmental odontomaxillary dysplasia (SOD) is a rare developmental disorder, with fewer than 70 cases reported in the literature. It typically presents in childhood as unilateral maxillary enlargement associated with dental anomalies and, in approximately half of cases, ipsilateral cutaneous features. Owing to its rarity and overlap with other maxillary pathologies, diagnosis remains challenging. This article aimed to report a new case of this rare disorder and highlight key management considerations through a review of the literature. OBSERVATION: A 14-year-old boy was referred

Effect of allogenic demineralized dentin matrix vs. xenograft in maxillary sinus floor augmentation: A randomized split-mouth study.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA) is commonly required in posterior maxillary atrophy. This study compared allogenic demineralized dentin matrix (ADDM) with a xenograft in MSFA. METHODS: In this randomized split-mouth trial, nine patients underwent bilateral MSFA with ADDM on one side and a xenograft on the other. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used to assess bone height and density at baseline and at six months. Core biopsies were obtained for histologic analysis. RESULTS: Both groups showed significant increases in bone height and density (P<0.001). Mean bon

The Hydraulic Sinus Lift Technique: Opportunities and Limitations.

The sinus lift procedure, first introduced in the 1970s to address insufficient bone height in the posterior maxilla for dental implants, has greatly evolved over the years. Traditional invasive techniques, such as the lateral window approach, posed a high risk of complications, including membrane perforation. Recent developments have led to the creation of the hydraulic sinus lift, introduced in 2005, which uses hydraulic pressure to gently lift the sinus membrane, lowering risks and increasing precision. Studies have shown its high success rates, minimal postoperative discomfort, and improve

Oral Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma and Its Management: A Rare Enigmatic Pediatric Case Report with Immunohistochemistry.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Malignant tumors are rarely seen in children, of which lymphomas and sarcomas like rhabdomyosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma prevail. Histopathologically, these lesions show numerous round cells, which make it difficult to differentiate between one another. Molecular analysis such as immunohistochemistry has proved to be beneficial and cost-effective. The current report aims to highlight an enigmatic case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS), emphasizing the role of immunohistochemistry. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old female patient presented to the dental outpatient department w

CT analysis of the prelacrimal recess: an access route to the maxillary sinus.

PURPOSE: Accessing the anterolateral maxillary sinus is challenging. The endoscopic pre-lacrimal recess approach (PLRA) involves removing the medial wall of the pre-lacrimal recess (PLR) between the piriform aperture (PA) and the nasolacrimal duct (NLD) while preserving the inferior turbinate and NLD. We studied the radiologic dimensions of the medial wall of the PLR to assess the feasibility of this approach across different maxillary sinus pathologies. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 104 triplanar CT scans (208 sides) was conducted in patients with maxillary sinus pathologies. Anteropo

Inferolateral Displacement of a Maxillary Third Molar Along the Buccal Fat Pad: A Case Report and Anatomical Note.

Iatrogenic displacement of maxillary third molars is an uncommon complication, usually reported in the maxillary sinus or deep posterior spaces. Buccal displacement along the buccal fat pad is rare and may be overlooked. We report the case of a 13-year-old female patient referred after attempted extraction of a maxillary right third molar germ under local anesthesia, resulting in inferolateral displacement. Cone-beam computed tomography localized the tooth in a superficial buccal position, outside the maxillary sinus, infratemporal fossa, pterygopalatine fossa, and parapharyngeal space. Clinic
