Primary Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis of the Maxilla: Case Report.

A 5-year-old boy presented with a two-month history of right facial swelling that persisted after resolution of an initial febrile illness, with no response to anti-inflammatory therapy. Contrast-enhanced MRI revealed expansive bone destruction of the anterior wall of the right maxillary sinus, cortical discontinuity, and a soft-tissue mass that appeared hypointense on T1WI, hyperintense on T2WI, and exhibited ring-like enhancement. The lesion was surgically resected via a Colles approach with maxillary sinus fenestration. Histopathology confirmed Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and immunohisto

Spontaneous bone formation after sinus graft infection control: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bone formation in the maxillary sinus is a rare phenomenon, commonly attributed to multiple factors that influence the space between the sinus floor and mucosa, thereby promoting the formation of blood clots in this region. Nevertheless, these factors are not yet fully elucidated. CASE PRESENTATION: In January 2022, a 20-year-old male patient underwent bone-added osteotome sinus floor elevation with simultaneous implant placement at the maxillary left first molar. However, 10 days after surgery, the patient presented with left infraorbital pain, peri-implant suppuratio

Primary Gingival Squamous Cell Carcinoma With Secondary Extension Into the Maxillary Sinus, Orbit, and Skull Base: A Case Report.

Gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) is an uncommon oral malignancy that may mimic benign periodontal disease, often leading to delayed diagnosis and advanced stage presentation. We present a 68-year-old man with primary GSCC demonstrating extensive secondary invasion into the maxillary sinus, orbit, and skull base. He presented with progressive weakness, poor oral intake, cachexia, right facial numbness, and visual disturbances. His history was notable for a prolonged absence of medical and dental care due to financial barriers. Imaging revealed a large, destructive mass with orbital apex,

Retrospective CBCT-based analysis of anatomical and demographic factors in implant planning for the maxillary first molar region.

BACKGROUND: Implant placement in the posterior maxilla is often complicated by anatomical limitations such as reduced alveolar bone volume, sinus pneumatization, sinus septa, and variations in ridge morphology. Accurate radiographic evaluation of these structures is therefore essential for predictable implant planning in the maxillary first molar region (MFMR). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between alveolar bone height (ABH), bucco-palatal crest thickness (CT), buccal concavity, sinus septa (SS), sinus pathology (SP), and demographic factors (age and gender), as we

Multi-class anatomical landmark detection in periapical radiographs with deep learning.

This study aims to develop a deep learning model for the detection and segmentation of multiple anatomical landmarks on periapical radiographs from the maxilla and mandible. A total of 1930 paralleling-technique periapical radiographs with 21 annotated anatomical landmarks were divided into training (80%), validation (10%), and test (10%) sets. Geometry-preserving preprocessing was applied before dataset splitting, while appearance-based augmentation was performed exclusively on the training subset after the split. A YOLOv8x-seg architecture was trained for multi-class detection and instance s

Comparative biological evaluation of [18F]fluciclovine, [18F]FBPA-Fr, and [18F]FET for boron neutron capture therapy: Preclinical validation and clinical feasibility.

PURPOSE: The PET tracer 4‑borono-2-[18F]-fluoro-phenylalanine fructose ([18F]FBPA-Fr) is commonly used to estimate the biodistribution of L-4-dihydroxy-borylphenylalanine fructose (BPA-Fr). However, its limited regulatory approval has prompted the exploration of alternative imaging agents. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of [18F]fluciclovine and [18F]fluoroethyl-tyrosine ([18F]FET) PET for pre-BNCT assessment, with direct comparison to [18F]FBPA-Fr. METHODS: In vitro cellular uptake studies were performed using two different cancer cell lines. In vivo microPET/MR imaging and biodi

Classification of maxillary sinus floor contours and mucosal thickening: a CBCT-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: The maxillary sinus is a pyramid-shaped cavity located within the facial skull. Comprehensive knowledge of its anatomy and anatomical variations is essential for surgical procedures in the posterior maxilla. Accurate radiological evaluation is therefore critical. This study aims to classify maxillary sinus floor morphology and assess the prevalence of maxillary sinus mucosal thickening in a Turkish subpopulation. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images from 203 patients were analyzed. Sinus floor contours were classified as narrow, tapered, ovoid, square, or irregular

Prevalence and Morphology of the Palatal Bone Reservoir in the Posterior Maxilla as an Alternative to Maxillary Sinus Lift: A Cross-Sectional Retrospective Analysis Determined by Helical CT Scan.

Background: Maxillary sinus lift is among the most common preprosthetic procedures in the posterior maxilla due to alveolar ridge resorption and the maxillary sinus pneumatization. It often extends treatment duration, significantly increases costs, and is not without complications. Objective: To explore the prevalence and morphology of the palatal bone reservoir as a viable site for dental implant insertion, offering a conservative alternative to avoid maxillary sinus lift. Methods: DICOM data sets from helical CT of maxillofacial trauma patients aged 50 years and older were used to perform vi

The Big Nose Pattern at the Second Upper Molar-A Retrospective CBCT Study.

Background/Objectives: A marked anteroposterior gradient of nasal fossa pneumatisation over the posterior maxillary alveolar base has been documented at the second premolar level, yet whether this gradient extends to the second upper molar (M2)-the primary site for posterior implant rehabilitation-remains uncharacterised. We aimed to quantify this gradient by classifying pneumatisation patterns above the maxillary alveolar base at M2 (Type 1: pure antral; Type 2: antral with palatine recess; Type 3: Big Nose pattern with combined antral and nasal involvement), assess bilateral symmetry and sex

The volumetric relationship of mastoid cavity and paranasal sinuses in unilateral chronic otitis media.

AIMS: A number of studies link ear and paranasal sinus disorders even though correlation between the development of the paranasal sinuses and the mastoid has not been demonstrated clearly. In this study, we examined temporal bone computed tomography (CT) scans to calculate mastoid and paranasal sinus volumes using three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction in patients with unilateral nonsuppurative chronic otitis media (COM) and investigated whether there was a correlation between mastoid and paranasal sinus volumes. METHODS: Of 85 patients with unilateral nonsuppurative COM, 51 patients who under

Automatic Personal Identification Using a Single MRI Slice.

Identification of unknown individuals is challenging, and radiological imaging databases provide rich anatomical information for automated recognition. This study evaluated whether a single routine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) slice contains sufficient person-specific features to identify individuals in large databases. It analyzed 11,078 head MRI examinations from 5770 individuals (age 52 ± 18 years, 2714 men) acquired between 2002 and 2025. For identification, 112 individuals were randomly selected across eight 10-year age groups, and one slice from four anatomical regions was extracted.
