Effects of childhood maltreatment on emotional intelligence and psychosocial functioning in adult euthymic bipolar disorder patients compared with healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) has been linked to poor emotional intelligence (EI) and psychosocial functioning (PSF) in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). However, no study has investigated whether EI mediates the relationship between CM and PSF in patients with BD. Here, we aimed to assess the association of CM with EI and PSF in euthymic patients with BD compared with healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: We assessed 124 euthymic participants with a BD diagnosis and 124 HCs by means of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test, the Functioning Assessment Short Test and the

Treatment interventions for co-occurring opioid use disorder, and sleep disturbances: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is part of the broader spectrum of substance use disorders often complicated by psychiatric symptoms such as depression, anxiety, PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), and sleep disturbances, with insomnia being particularly frequent. These psychiatric symptoms may act as precipitating factors and consequences of OUD, reinforcing a complex bidirectional relationship that complicates treatment and recovery. Despite the clinical importance of dual disorders, sleep impairments are particularly relevant yet understudied therapeutic targets and literature addr

Exploring sense of belonging in medical students: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Sense of belonging is increasingly discussed in health professions education and predominantly recognised as a necessary state for students' success. This study aims to synthesise the evidence and consider what it means to belong as a medical student, what impact it has on students and what influences its development. METHODS: A scoping review using the Arskey and O'Malley's five-step framework was conducted. MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, GlobalHealth, LILACS and Sabinet were searched for research articles relating to sense of belonging in medical students until 12 December 2025. R

Multidimensional Grocery-Store Preferences of Low-Income Caregivers of Toddlers.

BACKGROUND: Many United States toddlers do not meet recommended fruit and vegetable intakes, and intakes are lower in low-income households. Where caregivers shop shapes what they buy, yet studies of store choice have generally examined price and proximity alone, leaving other features of the retail environment largely unexamined. OBJECTIVES: We examined how household characteristics influence grocery-store preferences among caregivers of toddlers from low-income households in Texas. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in which caregivers of toddlers aged 12 to 47 mo from low-inco

Association of annual household income and insomnia symptoms based on work-life balance among Japanese female workers in older adult care services: A cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Socioeconomic status has been associated with sleep disturbance; however, the link between annual household income and insomnia symptoms, considering the additive association with work-life balance, has yet to be examined. Therefore, we investigated this association among Japanese female care workers. METHODS: Between 2015 and 2016, 451 women aged 18-60 years who worked in older adult care services were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Insomnia symptoms were measured using the Athens Insomnia Scale. Categorized annual household income was divided into two categories (high/midd

Representation in conservation publishing.

There is a persistent underrepresentation of marginalized voices in academic literature, including that for ecology and conservation. Such exclusion hampers career progression, perpetuating disadvantages for historically marginalized groups in the field, with implications for the direction of conservation research. Diverse perspectives foster novel thinking, strengthen innovation, and ensure research reflects the full spectrum of challenges faced by communities. To assess this underrepresentation, we analyzed self-reported demographic data for authors of scientific articles to explore demograp

Potential Use of AI Chatbots by Patients With Bowel Tumors: Opportunities and Implications for Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Bowel tumors and colorectal cancer (CRC), in particular, have become a major concern to the global health community and have led to high morbidity and mortality levels, especially in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This narrative review examines the potential roles of patient-facing AI chatbots and large language model (LLM)-based conversational tools across bowel tumor care, with particular attention to their potential applicability, limitations, and implementation requirements in LMICs. The available evidence spans small prospective and feasibility studies of patient-facing sympt

Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice Versus Conventional Simulation for Neonatal Resuscitation Training: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Effective neonatal resuscitation at birth is crucial for survival and has the potential to reduce neurodevelopmental morbidities. While traditional simulation-based training in neonatal resuscitation shows greater skill attrition over time, the Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice (RCDP) approach, a method involving repeated in-simulation practice with immediate feedback, may enhance skill acquisition and retention. However, evidence favoring RCDP in neonatal resuscitation is lacking, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries. METHODS: In this randomized trial, pediatric

Increasing fruit and vegetable access for young children and families: the critical impact of WIC policy.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) has ensured access to healthy foods for participating low-income pregnant and postpartum women and children under age 5 for over 50 years. Serving ∼6.8 million individuals monthly, WIC-eligible foods align with dietary science and only include foods rich in nutrients known to be deficient in US diets. Fruits and vegetables (FV) were introduced to the WIC food package in 2009; the $8-$10/month for FV were associated with small increases in consumption. In 2021, WIC FV benefits increased to provide 50% of the recomm

Beyond medical care: public health insurance, caloric intake, and labor productivity in rural China.

BACKGROUND: Research on public health insurance (PHI) and human capital has focused on direct pathways through which increased medical utilization improves human health capital. However, a possible indirect pathway may also exist: PHI may expand the budget for nonmedical expenditures, some of which are important human capital inputs. This study uses the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme (NRCMS) to examine whether two empirical associations are consistent with a potential indirect pathway: NRCMS participation is associated with higher individual caloric intake, and caloric intake is associat

The impact and cost of reaching the UNAIDS global HIV targets.

HIV funding has been declining in the past decade creating a large gap in required funding. In 2024, UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS) convened a Global Task Team in 2024 to recommend new targets and approaches for 2030 for key HIV interventions. This paper describes the approach to estimate the impact and cost of achieving those targets. We calibrated an HIV simulation model, Goals, to the historical HIV epidemic in 134 countries and used the model to project the impact of achieving the UNAIDS targets by 2030. Resource needs were estimated for 118 low-, lower-middle and uppe

Closing the implementation gap: prioritised, proactive, and accountable primary health care for the next decade.

Most preventable deaths in low-income and middle-income countries occur not because effective interventions are unknown or unaffordable but because health systems fail to deliver these interventions reliably. Primary health care is essential for public health: prevention, early detection, and treatment can reach entire populations. Nearly 50 years after the Alma-Ata Declaration, few primary health-care systems effectively prevent, detect, and treat the leading killers. Two forces make now the moment to act: the abrupt 2025 decrease in development assistance and new technologies that might impr

Health Care Costs and Immigration Status Among US Adults.

IMPORTANCE: The Affordable Care Act (ACA) expanded insurance coverage, while the 2018 Public Charge Rule Proposal (PCRP) raised concerns about immigration-related barriers to health care access. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in insurance coverage, health care use, and medical expenditures among immigrant and US-born adults across ACA expansion and post-PCRP eras, stratified by poverty status. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used nationally representative Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (2010-2023) data for US adults aged 19 to 64 years with available data on n

The intention to use Kangaroo Mother Care among first-time mothers 15-24 years in Kinshasa, DRC: An application of the integrated behavioral model.

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a low-cost, safe, and simple method that has proven efficacious at improving neonatal health outcomes, including mortality, in low-income countries. While beneficial for all newborns, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends KMC specifically for low birthweight (LBW) and premature infants. This study examined the applicability of a modified Integrated Behavioral Model (IBM) framework for predicting KMC intentions among first-time mothers (FTMs) 15-24 years old in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This study used secondary cross-sectional data

"Carrying the burden silently": A mixed-methods analysis of common mental health disorders among women caregivers living with HIV in Enugu, Nigeria.

Women caregivers living with HIV (WCLHIV) face a dual burden of managing their own health while caring for their families, increasing their vulnerability to mental health disorders. This study aimed to ascertain the prevalence and factors associated with common mental health disorders among WCLHIV in Enugu, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study employing a mixed method approach was conducted among 1,011 WCLHIV accessing anti-retroviral therapy in four tertiary health facilities in Enugu State, Nigeria. Quantitative data were obtained face-to-face using pre-tested, validated tools to assess the prev

Feasibility and acceptability of a shelter-based health empowerment program for pregnant and parenting youth experiencing homelessness.

Parenthood is common among youth experiencing homelessness (YEH), with multi-generational implications for health. Research on how to improve health among this historically marginalized population is limited. Our community-university partnership assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a shelter-based health empowerment program, which aimed to improve health among YEH and their children and prevent unplanned pregnancies. Drawing on frameworks from implementation science, we conducted semi-structured interviews with program participants (n = 11). We then conducted thematic analysis, using
