The therapeutic evaluation of novel small-molecule candidates requires a comprehensive understanding of their pharmacokinetic (PK) profiles under both baseline physiological conditions and pathophysiological stress states, such as radiation exposure. This study evaluates YK-4-250, a long acting Tempol-conjugated angiotensin receptor blocker (TCARB) being developed to treat gastrointestinal acute radiation syndrome (GI-ARS). Specifically, the study characterizes YK-4-250's non-compartmental PK profile following oral administration of 20 and 40 mg/kg doses to male and female, non-irradiated and

INTRODUCTION: Children are highly susceptible to radiation's carcinogenic effects. Lifestyle, in particular, diet-induced obesity (DIO) is closely linked to cancer risk factors. Most prior studies, however, have concentrated on the impact of long-term lifestyle factors.
OBJECTIVE: We assessed the impact of a short-term, high-fat diet (HFD) during young or adult on lifespan shortening and tumor development after infant radiation exposure.
METHODOLOGY: B6C3F1 male mice were irradiated at 1 week of age with 4 Gy of gamma rays or did not undergo irradiation (0 Gy). After weaning, they were assig

In the Schatzker classification, approximately 60.5% of tibial fractures can potentially involve depression fractures of the plateau, on average in types II, III, and IV, and are particularly prevalent among the elderly population. A significant challenge in managing these fractures is achieving optimal visualization of the depressed fracture segments during surgical intervention. Traditional management techniques include intraoperative fluoroscopy, submeniscal arthrotomy, and arthroscopic-guided reduction. However, each of these methods presents specific drawbacks: exposure to radiation, the

PURPOSE: Patient perceptions of radiation treatment may influence acceptance of this therapy, yet the impact of treatment terminology on these perceptions has not been experimentally tested. We aimed to determine whether labeling the treatment as "radiotherapy" versus "radiation therapy" affects treatment choice and psychological perceptions.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We conducted a preregistered, parallel-group randomized survey experiment on a demographically representative sample of United States adults. Participants were randomly assigned to a standardized clinical vignette describing early

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to present a technique for estimating the effect of ambient air pollution mix on health outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We created a technique of indexing air pollution mix as a cause of the increased odds of health problems. As an illustrative example, we analyzed the impact of pollution on the frequency of emergency department (ED) visits due to colitis among young patients (age < 15 years, N = 11 110). Our technique involves 2 steps. First, we considered 6 ambient air pollutants (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone, and 2 me

INTRODUCTION: Household energy transitions have the potential to reduce the burden of several health outcomes but have narrowly focused on those mediated by reduced exposure to air pollution, despite concerns about the burden of injury outcomes. Here, we aimed to describe the country-level incidence of severe cooking-related burns in Ghana and identify household-level risk factors for adults and children.
METHODS: We conducted a national household energy use survey including 7389 households across 370 enumeration areas in Ghana in 2020. In each household, a pretested version of the Clean Cook

Scientific understanding of the relationship between environmental hazards and cognitive health at older ages in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is poor. Using data from the Longitudinal Aging Study of India and the World Health Organization's Survey on Global AGEing and adult health for 4 LMICs, we examine the association of direct and local exposure to polluting cooking fuels with cognitive health at older ages. We document the negative influence of both: Cognitive health is poorer among members of households that use polluting fuels and among residents of neighborhoods where the us

BACKGROUND: Childhood exposure to air pollution has long-term effects on adult bronchitic symptoms, but the age windows of susceptibility are understudied.
METHODS: We included 1444 participants from the Southern California Children's Health Study, who were recruited at ages ∼9-10 years in 1992-1993 or 1995-1996 or ages ∼5-7 years in 2002-2003, followed until high-school graduation, and re-contacted again in adulthood (mean age = 33 years) to collect self-reported bronchitic symptoms. Yearly average nitrogen dioxide (NO2), 8-h maximum ground-level ozone (O3), and particulate matter of ≤10 µm

This systematic review and meta-analysis examine the association between environmental air pollution and the risk of depression and anxiety. We systematically searched studies published up to March 2025 and included 81 eligible studies focusing on particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and black carbon (BC). Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to calculate pooled relative risks for short-term (<30 days) and long-term (≥30 days) exposures. We assessed study heterogeneity, publication bias, risk of bias, and evidence quality. Findings reveal consistent associations bet

Early life gut microbiota function as biological sensors for maternal prenatal exposure and play a crucial role in infant neurodevelopment. During pregnancy, air pollution and psychological distress are regarded as general and specific external exposures, respectively; however, the joint influence of these two domains on shaping early life gut microbiota remains unexplored. In this study, 309 mother-infant pairs were recruited from the obstetrics departments of two tertiary hospitals. We collected data on maternal prenatal air pollution exposure and psychological distress, obtained meconium sa

OBJECTIVE: Long-term exposure to air pollution and the presence of depressive symptoms have been associated with an increased prevalence of cardio-metabolic multimorbidity (CMM). However, their associations with CMM among middle-aged and older adults in China remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine the associations of air pollution exposure and depressive symptoms with CMM, and test for potential interactions between these factors, providing evidence to inform public health strategies.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzes health data from 8,192 residents aged 45 and older fr

Exposure to air pollution has been associated with anemia in children, but little effort has been made in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in which the prevalence of anemia is persistently high. This study aimed to assess the effects of air pollution and household environmental indicators on anemia among children aged 6-59 months using machine learning algorithms. The Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) datasets from 45 LMICs were linked with the satellite-derived estimates of annual average particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) based on children's area of residence. BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to air pollution has been linked to adverse health outcomes in older adults; however, its association with frailty, particularly the potential protective role of environmental factors such as greenness, remains insufficiently investigated.
METHODS: Data from the Healthy Aging Longitudinal Study in Taiwan, which included 5336 community-dwelling individuals aged 55 years and older, were analyzed. Frailty was assessed using modified criteria from the Cardiovascular Health Study. Exposure to air pollutants was estimated using land use regression model with machine l

This study investigates the social patterning of environmental exposures, examining how three socioeconomic position dimensions influence exposure to air pollution, road traffic noise, and availability of green spaces, in both urban and rural areas in England, Scotland, and Wales. Using data from the UK Biobank cohort study, we assessed associations between three individual markers of socioeconomic position: educational attainment, household income, and employment status, and three environmental exposure domains: residential airborne pollutants, residential road traffic noise, and residential

Black carbon (BC), a key toxic constituent of ambient PM2.5, and psychosocial stress, heightened by socioeconomic instability, both impair cardiovascular health. While epidemiological studies suggest that psychosocial stress could amplify the cardiovascular risks associated with air pollution, experimental evidence on the acute effects and mechanisms of joint exposure to BC and psychosocial stress is still lacking. In this study, a psychosocial stress model of male Sprague Dawley rats was exposed to different doses of BC by intratracheal instillation, followed by measurement of the hippocampal

To address the unavailability of air pollution measurements for individuals, epidemiological studies have estimated air pollution at people's residences or workplaces using exposure prediction models consisting of numerous geographic characteristics. However, these characteristics that represent potential pollution sources are typically fixed in time, ignoring temporal changes. Such ignorance may affect the accuracy of exposure prediction and the validity in health analyses. This study compared the predictive performance of time-aligned models (TAM) including temporally-varying geographic char

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a significant modifiable risk factor that exacerbates asthma and compromises overall pulmonary health. American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations may experience inequitable exposure to air pollution due to centuries of discrimination and forced relocation.
AIMS: This review summarizes studies examining air pollution and its effects on pulmonary health in AI/AN children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrative review was undertaken by searching the largest medical literature databases. The search yielded ~100 articles, of which 12 are included in the review.

Urban trucking poses significant health and environmental risks, particularly diesel-fueled trucks. Off-peak delivery (OPD), which refers to the delivery of goods during evening and overnight hours, provides an opportunity to mitigate traffic congestion and improve delivery efficiency. However, the impacts of this delivery schedule on population exposure to air pollution are not clear. This study investigates the spatial distribution of traffic-related air pollutants under two OPD scenarios and assesses their environmental justice implications, in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
