Novel perspective of 'poor sleep' in public health: a narrative review.

A high percentage of people worldwide complain of sleep disturbances; however, the vast majority do not meet the diagnostic criteria for insomnia or other classic sleep disorders. Therefore, the 'classical' concept of poor sleep remains undetected, and patients stay ignored and unidentified. Also, poor sleep has been strongly associated with increased daytime function impairment, morbidity and mortality and is considered a risk factor for developing mental disorders. Poor sleep is the individual experience of insufficient restorative sleep and/or sleep satisfaction in adults who do not fulfil

Co-exposure of petrochemical workers to noise and mixture of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene: Impact on mild renal impairment and interaction.

Epidemiological evidence concerning effects of simultaneous exposure to noise and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene (BTEXS) on renal function remains uncertain. In 2020, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 1160 petrochemical workers in southern China to investigate effects of their co-exposure on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and mild renal impairment (MRI). Noise levels were assessed using cumulative noise exposure (CNE). Urinary biomarkers for BTEXS were quantified. We found the majority of workers had exposure levels to noise and BTEXS below China's o

Effects of noise exposure on stress hormone changes during task performance in young Korean men: quasi-experimental study.

Numerous studies have suggested that noise exposure might be associated with changes in stress hormone levels. However, quantitative evidence for these effects in humans is rare and remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of exposure to noise and its different levels on stress hormone changes in task performance. Quasi-experimental noise exposure environment was established for 90 male university student volunteers in their twenties, and each was exposed to different noise levels during task performance. The stress hormones tested included cortisol, adrenocorti

Investigating the effects of co-exposure to noise and benzene on serum oxidative stress in rat.

Occupational exposures are generally complex, workers are exposed with more than one hazardous agent in work environment. Combined exposure to noise and benzene is common in occupational environments. Sub-acute exposure to benzene vapors can induce oxidative stress in serum. Additionally, noise exposure leads to non-auditory effects, such as oxidative stress. However, In the authors' research scope, a study aimed at investigating the effect of co-exposure to noise and benzene on the oxidative stress of rat serum has not been found. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of co-e

Transcriptional response to mild therapeutic hypothermia in noise-induced cochlear injury.

INTRODUCTION: Prevention or treatment for acoustic injury has been met with many translational challenges, resulting in the absence of FDA-approved interventions. Localized hypothermia following noise exposure mitigates acute cochlear injury and may serve as a potential avenue for therapeutic approaches. However, the mechanisms by which hypothermia results in therapeutic improvements are poorly understood. METHODS: This study performs the transcriptomic analysis of cochleae from juvenile rats that experienced noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) followed by hypothermia or control normothermia tr

From hidden hearing loss to supranormal auditory processing by neurotrophin 3-mediated modulation of inner hair cell synapse density.

Loss of synapses between spiral ganglion neurons and inner hair cells (IHC synaptopathy) leads to an auditory neuropathy called hidden hearing loss (HHL) characterized by normal auditory thresholds but reduced amplitude of sound-evoked auditory potentials. It has been proposed that synaptopathy and HHL result in poor performance in challenging hearing tasks despite a normal audiogram. However, this has only been tested in animals after exposure to noise or ototoxic drugs, which can cause deficits beyond synaptopathy. Furthermore, the impact of supernumerary synapses on auditory processing has

Noise and silver nanoparticles induce hepatotoxicity via CYP450/NF-Kappa B 2 and p53 signaling pathways in a rat model.

Co-exposure to noise and nanomaterials, such as silver nanoparticles (Silver-NPs), is a common occurrence in today's industries. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure to noise and the administration of silver-NPs on the liver tissue of rats. Thirty-six adult male albino Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups: a control group (administered saline intraperitoneally), two groups administered different doses of Silver-NPs (50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg, 5 days a week for 28 days), two groups exposed to noise in addition to Silver-NPs (at the same doses as mentioned before), a

A novel model of sensorineural hearing loss induced by repeated exposure to moderate noise in mice: the preventive effect of resveratrol.

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) induced by noise has increased in recent years due to personal headphone use and noisy urban environments. The study shows a novel model of gradually progressive SNHL induced by repeated exposure to moderate noise (8-kHz octave band noise, 90-dB sound pressure level) for 1 hr exposure per day in BALB/cCr mice. The results showed that the repeated exposure led to gradually progressive SNHL, which was dependent on the number of exposures, and resulted in permanent hearing loss after 5 exposures. Repeated exposure to noise causes a loss of synapses between the in

Amitriptyline protects afferent synapses in the cochlea against excitotoxic trauma in vitro.

Afferent synapses between inner hair cells (IHCs) and the type I spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) in the cochlea provide over 95% of sensory signals for auditory perception in the brain. However, these afferent synapses are particularly vulnerable to damage, for example from excitotoxicity, and exposure to noise in the environment which often leads to noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy (NICS). In this study, we simulated excitotoxic trauma by incubating kainic acid, a non-desensitizing agonist for AMPA type glutamate receptors on cultured cochleae. The possible protective effects of amitriptyli

Neural and behavioral binaural hearing impairment and its recovery following moderate noise exposure.

Noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy has been studied for over 25 years with no known diagnosis for this disorder in humans. This type of "hidden hearing loss" induces a loss of synapses in the inner ear but no change in audiometric thresholds. Recent studies have shown that by two months post synaptopathy-inducing noise exposure, synapses in some animal species can regenerate. Animal studies to date have focused primarily on peripheral hearing measures to diagnose ribbon synapse loss, while suggesting binaural listening deficits such as speech-reception-in-noise result from this disorder, but

Hearing protection field attenuation estimation systems and associated training for reducing workers' exposure to noise.

BACKGROUND: Global Burden of Disease studies identify hearing loss as the third leading cause of years lived with a disability. Their estimates point to large societal and individual costs from unaddressed hearing difficulties. Workplace noise is an important modifiable risk factor; if addressed, it could significantly reduce the global burden of disease. In practice, providing hearing protection devices (HPDs) is the most common intervention to reduce noise exposure at work. However, lack of fit of HPDs, especially earplugs, can greatly limit their effectiveness. This may be the case for 40%
