Neural Responses to Caregivers After Early Life Threat Experiences.

Evidence from rodent studies highlights the mother as a safety cue that regulates fear and biology. However, when infant rats are exposed to rough maternal care (i.e., threat), their brains show atypical patterns of activity in response to maternal cues. In humans, childhood adversity (i.e., international adoption, involvement with Child Protective Services) is also associated with differential neural responses to caregiver cues. However, to date, no studies have tested the hypothesis that childhood adversity characterized by threat (e.g., physical abuse, domestic violence) influences neural r

Development of a conceptual model of BKV impacts on health-related quality of life in kidney transplant recipients: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: BK virus (BKV) is a common latent virus that can reactivate in kidney transplant recipients due to immunosuppressive therapy, potentially leading to graft dysfunction or loss. While clinical management of BKV is well studied, little is known about its broader impact on patients’ daily lives and well-being. No conceptual model currently exists to describe the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impacts of BKV from the patient perspective. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured concept elicitation interviews with 12 adult kidney transplant recipients who h

Psychometric properties and network analysis of the brief Adverse Childhood Experiences Abuse Short Form (ACE-ASF) in homosexual and heterosexual.

BACKGROUND: The Adverse Childhood Experiences Abuse describes the physical, emotional, and sexual abuse undergone in childhood, which is associated with negative effects on mental, emotional, and relational health later in adulthood. OBJECTIVE: To assess the psychometric properties of the ACE-ASF (Adverse Childhood Experiences Abuse Short Form) in homosexual, and heterosexual in Ecuador, with a special focus on reliability, validity, measurement invariance, and network analysis of self-perceived abuse (fear, trapped and abused). METHODS: Instrumental study with 520 participants (nHomosexual

Children's narratives of violence: Qualitative findings from a violence study with young children in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Research on violence against children in Africa often relies on adult's qualitative accounts or on quantitative surveys that focus mainly on sexual abuse or on adverse childhood exposures. We seldom hear how young children describe their experiences and their perceptions of violence. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe children's personal experiences and perceptions of violence. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study was conducted from 2022 to 2023 in peri-urban and rural Mpumalanga, South Africa with 23 children aged between 6 and 12 years who, together with their primary careg

Childhood maltreatment as a predictor of fear of crime and the mediating role of fear dimensions.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is a major public health concern with lifelong mental health consequences. Fear of crime (FOC) relates to victimization and mental health, yet the specific CM-FOC association remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine how experiences of maltreatment shape affective fear responses later in life. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTINGS: A representative German sample of 2530 participants (54% female; age 16-92, M = 49.42) was surveyed on experiences of CM using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Affective, cognitive, and behavioral FOC were measured using items ada

Shared and specific associations of amygdala nuclei volumes with PTSD symptom domains and childhood trauma: An ENIGMA-PGC PTSD mega-analysis.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that may develop after trauma exposure. PTSD is characterized by considerable clinical heterogeneity. The amygdala's key role in fear conditioning makes it an important focus for investigating the neurobiology of PTSD. However, associations between amygdala volume and PTSD have been inconsistent. The amygdala consists of functionally distinct nuclei. Specific associations between amygdala nuclei volumes and PTSD may account for previous discrepancies between PTSD and whole amygdala volume. This study investigates the associations

Associations between adverse childhood experiences and oral health in Norwegian adults, and the impact of social support and adulthood revictimization. The HUNT4 Survey.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase the risk of various health issues, including oral problems. ACEs also heighten the risk of revictimization, though the impact of adulthood revictimization on oral health is less understood. Conversely, positive influences, such as a trusted adult in childhood, may buffer these effects. This study examines how different dimensions of adversity relate to oral health. This cross-sectional study included 37 559 adults from the HUNT4 Survey, a general population study in Norway. We examined distinct ACE exposures: (i) specific ACEs (i.e. sexual, physica

Fever, Frustration and Fortitude: A Qualitative Exploration of Nursing Practice in Paediatric Settings.

BACKGROUND: Fever is one of the most common symptoms in children and a leading cause of their hospitalisation. Nurses, as primary caregivers in paediatric wards, play a pivotal role in the assessment and management of children with fever. However, nurses' perceptions and experiences of fever management are influenced by cultural contexts, psychological and social factors, as well as prevailing health system policies. AIM: The aim of the study was to explore nurses' perceptions influencing their management of childhood fever, including barriers and facilitators to evidence-based practice. DES

Associative Learning and Adverse Childhood Experiences: A Multi-System Protocol.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are established transdiagnostic risk factors for adult anxiety and depression, yet the neurocognitive mechanisms linking early adversity to symptoms remain unclear within a unified framework. This protocol presents an integrated, multi-system experimental battery that captures threat discrimination, safety learning, and reward sensitivity within a single laboratory session. Thirty-eight healthy adults completed three behavioral paradigms - Pavlovian-to-operant fear conditioning with avoidance (Experiment 1), fear acquisition-extinction-reacquisition with so

Identifying Vulnerability in Adults With Congenital Heart Disease: A Mixed-Methods Examination of Psychosocial Experiences.

BACKGROUND: With increased survival into adulthood, psychosocial research in adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) has become increasingly important. However, existing studies often rely on isolated quantitative metrics or small qualitative samples, limiting insight into patients' lived experiences and potential variation across demographic subgroups. To address this gap, this mixed-methods study integrated quantitative survey data with qualitative thematic analysis to characterize psychosocial experiences among ACHD and examine differences by disease complexity, sex, and age. METHODS:

Immersive virtual reality during pediatric vaccination: a quasi-experimental study of pain, fear, and care experience.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is a common source of childhood pain and fear and may negatively affect future immunization experiences. Although virtual reality (VR) has shown promise in pediatric needle-related procedures, evidence from routine vaccination in primary care remains limited. OBJECTIVES: To assess preliminary between-group differences in children's self-reported pain and fear during pediatric vaccination, comparing immersive VR with usual care, and to describe acceptability and safety indicators. METHODS: This quasi-experimental, non-randomized controlled study included 100 child-care

Ambivalent self-concept and feared self mediates the relationship between negative early life experiences and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

The feared self, the self that a person fears they might be or become, has been increasingly shown to drive the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, there is little empirical research on how this feared self develops. Aardema and Wong's cognitive-behavioural theory of OCD proposes that negative early life experiences (e.g., childhood trauma) can disrupt healthy self-concept development, leading to an ambivalent self-concept and the feared self, and consequently OCD symptoms. We investigated these hypothesised relationships using a cross-sectional design

Experiences of self-identification, diagnosis and support for adults seeking a recognition of tic disorders in the United Kingdom.

AIMS: This study aimed to examine the experiences of self-identification, diagnosis, and support for adults with tic disorders (including Tourette Syndrome) in the United Kingdom (UK). BACKGROUND: Traditionally viewed as a neurological disorder of childhood-onset, tic disorders have been observed to remit or persist, often in a milder form, into adulthood. However, the reappearance of problematic symptoms after periods of asymptomatic latency might be more common than previously recognized. The medical exposure and standardization of clinical practice for primary adult-onset or non-typical ad

Childhood abuse, dissociation and hypnosis: Trauma-related transference.

This article presents how to apply psychodynamic theory of transference in the treatment of traumatized patients who have endured repeated early life trauma and a lack of relational safety. To make hypnosis safe, the author adapts her interventions to each patient's unique needs. Clinically relevant and experientially informed perspectives are provided, designed to support therapists in maintaining a safe hypnotic approach when patients relate to the therapist with negative transference, such as anger, hate, fear and distrust. In contrast to the popular focus on techniques, goals and treatment

Caregiving experiences, challenges and needs of mothers for their young children who are HIV exposed and uninfected from Worcester, South Africa - A qualitative exploration through the nurturing care framework.

In high HIV prevalence settings, pregnancy and early childhood can be stressful periods for mothers with HIV, due to fear of HIV transmission, breastfeeding concerns, poor health and socio-economic challenges. Not much is known about how mothers of young children who are HIV exposed and uninfected (HEU) experience caregiving before and beyond the confirmation of their HIV-negative status. Using the Nurturing Care Framework for early childhood development, this qualitative study explores the caregiving experiences, challenges, and support needs of mothers raising young children who are HEU. Associations of childhood sexual maltreatment and negative birth experiences: Mediating role of posttraumatic stress in late pregnancy.

PURPOSE: Childhood sexual maltreatment is a well-documented risk factor for adverse perinatal physical and mental health outcomes, which are worse in women of color compared to white women. Yet, the pathways through which early sexual trauma influences childbirth experiences and the role of ethnicity/race in these associations are insufficiently understood. This study examined the relationship between childhood sexual maltreatment and negative childbirth experiences, with a focus on the potential mediating roles of late-pregnancy posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and fear of childbirth. Determinants of secondary prophylaxis for childhood rheumatic heart disease in Ethiopia: A qualitative study of children and caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains a major public health challenge in Ethiopia, particularly among children. Monthly intramuscular benzathine penicillin G (BPG) is the cornerstone of secondary prophylaxis, yet adherence and delivery are suboptimal. This study explores the lived experiences of children and adolescents with RHD, capturing their direct voices and those of their caregivers to understand determinants of secondary prophylaxis uptake. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted from May to July 2022 in four Ethiopian public hospitals providing RHD care. Foc

ΔNp63α‑mediated regulation of tumor‑associated genes and pathways in hepatocellular carcinoma progression.

An understanding of the neural control of lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) relaxation is clinically relevant because transient LOS relaxations (TLOSRs) are a mechanism of acid reflux into the oesophagus. Preganglionic motor neurones innervating the LOS are localized in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV). Based on a single study in cats, it is now widely accepted that these neurones are functionally organized into two separate populations, such that stimulation of the caudal and rostral DMV evokes LOS relaxation and contraction, respectively. Our goal was to map the functional LOS res

Quality of life in families of infants and toddlers with food allergies: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Food allergies (FA) are a growing public health concern affecting family wellbeing. While previous research has focused largely on school-aged children, limited evidence exists regarding families of infants and toddlers. This study examined the quality of life (QoL) in families with children aged up to 3 years with food allergies in Cyprus and sought to identify modifiable factors that may inform strategies to improve family QoL. METHODS: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative data were collected from mothers of 100 children with FA diagnosis by eithe
