Global, regional, and national burden of exposure to chewing tobacco, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to chewing tobacco is a known health risk factor but has received less attention than smoking in global tobacco control efforts. As the evidence base linking chewing tobacco use to poor health grows, it is essential to closely track the changing use of chewing tobacco distinct from other forms of smokeless tobacco, as well as the estimated burden associated with its use. These data are essential to inform policy makers who seek to identify and avert the health burden associated with these dangerous products. METHODS: We estimated the prevalence of chewing tobacco use and

Perioperative nicotine replacement therapy and 30-day outcomes following coronary artery bypass graft surgery: A propensity matched analysis of patients with documented tobacco use.

Smoking cessation is important after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), but perioperative nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) remains inconsistently used because of concerns regarding wound healing and cardiovascular complications. CABG-specific evidence is limited. We evaluated the association between perioperative NRT exposure and 30-day outcomes among patients with tobacco use undergoing isolated CABG. Patients undergoing isolated CABG (2018-2023) were identified in TriNetX. Perioperative NRT was defined by a medication order or administration record 14 days before though 7 days after s

Emerging non-AIDS comorbidities among adults with and without perinatally-acquired HIV.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with perinatally acquired HIV (PHIV) who age into adulthood may be at risk for the early development of specific non-AIDS associated comorbidities (NAC). It is unclear whether the early initiation of ART among PHIV may decrease risk for the development of specific NAC. METHODS: This retrospective study examined NAC outcomes among a cohort of PHIV and an age range-matched cohort of people with non-perinatally acquired HIV (NPHIV). Multivariate logistic regression models examined the association between clinical/demographic predictors and NAC and the association between

Machine Learning Identifies Community-Level Factors Associated with Lung Cancer Incidence.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Individual-level risk factors such as tobacco use are well characterized, but the community-level environmental, social, and economic contributions to geographic variation in incidence remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We conducted an ecological analysis of 542 Medical Service Study Areas (MSSAs) in California, linking age-adjusted lung cancer incidence rates (AAIR, 2015-2019) to 27 indicators of pollution, population characteristics, and adult smoking prevalence. Machine learning and SHapley Add

Heated Tobacco Product Awareness and Use Among Young Adult Texas College Students During a Period of Renewed Market Activity, 2025-2026.

Little is known about heated tobacco product (HTP; e.g., IQOS) use among young adults following IQOS reentry to the US market, initially centered in Austin, Texas. We examined HTP awareness and use among Texas college students during renewed market activity. Repeated cross-sectional surveys included 17,750 participants (18-29y) attending 19 Texas colleges in 2025 and 2026. Mixed-effects logistic regression models examined changes in HTP awareness and use by survey year, campus location (Austin vs. non-Austin), and demographic, tobacco use, and cessation correlates. Overall, 14.8% reported HTP

Understanding the Influence of Substance Use, Mental Health, and Stigma on Smoking Behavior Among People Living With HIV: Rapid Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Vietnam, an upper-middle-income country, the majority of people living with HIV smoke. Vietnam has established quitline services to support this population, but they remain underused. Text messaging is widely used in Vietnam, and studies in other countries have shown that text messaging interventions can promote smoking cessation. Our goal was to conduct a formative study to inform the development of a text messaging intervention to increase access to quitline services and promote smoking cessation among people living with HIV who smoke in Vietnam. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed t

Cultural adaptation of a digital health intervention for smoking cessation among Hispanic/Latino adults in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.

OBJECTIVE: Hispanic/Latino ("H/L") communities experience high levels of tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. Accessible, culturally appropriate interventions are needed to address barriers to smoking cessation. This qualitative study informed the linguistic and cultural adaptation of a mindfulness-based text messaging intervention for smoking cessation among H/L adults. METHODS: Individual interviews were conducted with H/L adults who currently smoke (n = 7), H/L adults who formerly smoked (n = 11), and other key informants (e.g., healthcare providers, medical translators, n = 8) in Atla

Maternal and Indoor Smoking Are Associated with Increased Risk of Acute Respiratory Infection in Under-Five Children: A Meta-Analysis of National Survey Data from Eight Asia-Pacific Countries.

Background: Early exposure to tobacco smoke can harm children's developing respiratory systems, increasing the risk of acute and long-term health consequences. This study examined the association of maternal and indoor smoking with acute respiratory infection (ARI) in under-five children living in eight Asia-Pacific countries. Methods: We analysed Demographic and Health Survey data collected between 2015 and 2022. A logistic regression model was fitted separately to each country's data to obtain the odds of ARI in children for maternal tobacco use, daily indoor smoking, and occasional indoor s

Adherence trajectories to nicotine replacement therapy among people living with HIV in Uganda: A secondary analysis of the Quit4Life+ randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is an evidence-based approach to tobacco cessation, yet little is known about adherence to NRT among people living with HIV (PLWH) in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to identify NRT adherence trajectories among PLWH in Uganda and examine both baseline predictors and the role of SMS-delivered support in shaping adherence over time. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of longitudinal data from 200 PLWH, aged ≥18 years with urine cotinine-verified tobacco use and randomized to receive NRT in the Ugandan sites (West Nile and Karamoja re

Trends in transitions in cigarette and electronic nicotine vapor product use in the Rutgers Omnibus Study, 2022-2026.

INTRODUCTION: Monitoring transitions in cigarette and electronic nicotine vapor product (ENVP) use is important for understanding how marketplace and regulatory changes have affected product use patterns, but information from national surveys is often delayed by several years. METHODS: The Rutgers Omnibus Study is a quarterly serial, rapid-response, web-based convenience survey. Using a Markov multistate transition model, we estimated transition rates and one-year transition probabilities between never, non-current, ENVP-only, cigarette-only, and dual use among 5,292 adults aged 18-45 who par

Cannabis Co-Use and Endocannabinoid System Modulation in Tobacco Use Disorder.

Tobacco use disorder (TUD) remains a leading cause of preventable mortality, and existing pharmacotherapies yield 12-month abstinence rates below 30%. As cannabis legalization expands, approximately 18-22% of people who use tobacco report concurrent cannabis use, yet the impact of co-use on cessation outcomes and the therapeutic potential of endocannabinoid system (ECS) modulation remain unclear. We conducted a translational systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searching Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, APA PsycInfo, and Web of Science through January 2026 (PROSPERO: CRD4
