Astragaloside IV attenuates ferroptosis-related testicular injury in rats with experimental varicocele.

Varicocele is an important correctable cause of male infertility. Oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation contribute to the associated testicular injury, but the role of ferroptosis remains controversial. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV), a quality-control metabolite of Astragali radix, has antioxidant activity and can modulate ferroptosis-related processes, yet its effect in varicocele is unclear. This study evaluated whether AS-IV attenuates testicular injury in experimental varicocele and examined ferroptosis-related mechanisms. A Sprague-Dawley rat model was established by partial ligation of the

A Typology of Moderator Practices and Community Guidelines in Online Mental Health Communities to Establish a Framework for Digital Safety: Systematized Review.

BACKGROUND: The rise of online mental health communities has reshaped the ways individuals seek and receive mental health support. Although online mental health communities (OMHCs) offer a valuable space for peer support, including through experience-sharing, they also present challenges, including moderation practices to cultivate supportive interactions and secure member safety. No comprehensive framework of moderation practices has been established. Developing such an understanding is important, as moderators play a central role in facilitating a sense of community and determining whether O

Quantifying dexterity and grip strength associations between age, cognitive function (MoCA), and cerebellar gray matter volume in healthy adults across the adult lifespan.

Cerebellar Crus I/II gray matter volume (GMV) is a structural marker of cognitive aging, and motor performance predicts age-related cognitive decline. Whether grip strength and manual dexterity dissociate in their cerebellar and cognitive correlates is unknown. We computed Pearson partial correlations (age, sex, and race covaried) between grip strength, Nine-Hole Peg Test (9HPT) dexterity, cerebellar Crus I/II GMV, and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) subscores in 304 healthy adults aged 20-79 from the University of South Carolina Aging Brain Cohort. GMV was derived from T1-weighted MRI us

Bridging gaps in breast cancer clinical trial enrollment: insights from a community-based research registry initiative.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer research registries are critical for ensuring representative participation in clinical trials. However, registries based primarily in hospitals may under-enroll women and other populations who experience structural, logistical, cultural, and informational barriers to care and research participation. Community-based organizations (CBOs) may help address this gap by developing registries that engage diverse populations of women at increased risk for and surviving with breast cancer more directly. The purpose of this study was to examine demographic, clinical, and organizational

Tumor volume may be a better indicator than diameter for occult lymph node metastasis in patients with clinical stage-1 lung cancer.

Occult lymph node metastasis (OLM) remains a major clinical challenge in patients with lung cancer despite comprehensive preoperative staging efforts. Although several predictors of OLM, including tumor diameter, metabolic activity, molecular characteristics, and radiomics, have been extensively investigated, the predictive role of tumor volume remains poorly defined. This study aimed to evaluate whether tumor volume, quantified semi-automatically using artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted Synapse 3D software, could predict OLM in patients with clinically early-stage lung cancer. Patients who

Study on the promoting effect of microplastic exposure on prostate cancer migration and invasion based on network toxicology and single-cell sequencing technology.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a major malignant tumor threatening men's global health. The plasticizer acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC), widely used as a substitute for phthalates, is increasingly detected in human tissues; however, its role in PCa cell migration and invasion and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. METHODS: This study integrated network toxicology, scRNA-seq, transcriptomic analysis, Mendelian randomization (MR), and machine learning. In vitro, LNCaP cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were evaluated after ATBC treatment. ATBC toxicity targets were

Deciphering the clinical significance of Beclin-1 and Bcl-2 in urothelial carcinoma of bladder.

BACKGROUND: Considering an important interplay of Beclin-1 and Bcl-2 in autophagy, where Bcl-2 inhibits autophagy by binding and inhibiting Beclin-1, evaluation of their expressions may provide insights into the tumor biology of the clinically distinct non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Beclin-1 and Bcl-2 expressions were examined by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, Western hybridization, and immunohistochemical staining (IHC) in 47 NMIBC and 37 MIBC patients. Their expressions were evaluated in relatio

The relationship between symptoms of adenomyosis and current ultrasonographic diagnostic criteria.

INTRODUCTION: Adenomyosis is a uterine disorder defined by presence of endometrial glands and stroma within the myometrium with surrounding myometrial hyperplasia. Research has shown that ultrasound (US) can play a key role in early adenomyosis diagnosis and treatment. The Morphological Uterus Sonographic Assessment (MUSA) recently published standardized criteria for ultrasonographic diagnosis of adenomyosis, but the relationship between these criteria and clinical symptoms, has yet to be clinically validated. OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of MUSA ultrasound criteria of adenomyosis and

Case Report: Beyond the stomach: the role of preoperative imaging in assessing regurgitation risk in patients with esophageal dilatation: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative regurgitation of gastric or esophageal contents remains a severe complication during anesthesia. While standard fasting protocols and rapid sequence induction (RSI) are routinely employed, esophageal dilatation creates a hidden reservoir for retained food and secretions that conventional methods often fail to mitigate. Furthermore, standard gastric ultrasound lacks the field of view to detect mid-to-proximal esophageal pooling. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two parallel cases emphasizing this critical challenge. Case 1 involves a 68-year-old male with esophageal carc

Glycosides of Cistanche improve cognitive dysfunction in sleep-deprived model rats by activating the SIRT1/PGC-1α/Nrf2 signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep deprivation suppresses the SIRT1/PGC-1α/Nrf2 signaling pathway, leading to oxidative stress, synaptic damage, and cognitive dysfunction. Glycosides of Cistanche (GCs) possess well-documented antioxidant and neuroprotective properties and have been reported to improve cognition in sleep-deprived animals, but the molecular mechanism remains unclear. We hypothesized that GCs alleviate sleep deprivation-induced cognitive dysfunction by activating the SIRT1/PGC-1α/Nrf2 signaling pathway. METHODS: Sixty male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to six groups (n = 10): Control

Microglia disulfidptosis contributes to worsening of diabetic retinopathy induced by acute hypoglycemia.

The early worsening of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is associated with rapid declines in blood glucose levels during diabetes treatment, yet its pathogenesis remains poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the role of acute hypoglycemia (AH) in microglial disulfidptosis and the underlying mechanisms during DR progression. Using single-cell sequencing, we identified SLC7A11high microglia. Glucose deprivation further upregulated SLC7A11 expression in microglia, leading to excessive cystine uptake, NADPH depletion, and disulfide stress, which also activated Rac1-WRC signaling, driving F-ac

Mechanistic insight into conflicting valence fluctuation of Cu(I) photocorrosion pathways: The role of charge behaviors.

Photocorrosion remains a major challenge that hinders the development of photoelectrochemical (PEC) solar fuel production. Although Cu2O is a promising photocathode material due to its suitable band structure and visible light absorption, both oxidative and reductive photocorrosion pathways have been reported, with no consensus established in the research community in the PEC system. In this work, we fabricate three Cu2O photocathodes with distinct charge transport properties to investigate the correlation between charge accumulation and photocorrosion behavior. Both oxidative and reductive ph

Surface Effect and Termination-Dependent Charge Order Instability in Kagome Superconductor CsV3Sb5.

Kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit intertwined symmetry-breaking orders, including charge density wave (CDW), superconductivity, and time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), yet their relationship, nature, and experimental detections remain under intense debate. At the heart of these controversies lies a critical yet often overlooked factor: the surface effect, which may engineer distinct technique-dependent observations. By combining density functional theory calculations and ARPES measurements, we unveil the important role of surface effect on the CDW instability and electr
