PURPOSE: Immune response to tumors defines patient outcomes and our goal was to identify where tumors lie on the self/nonself axis and if they exploit selfness to subvert immune destruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A new measure for quantifying selfness was developed using transcriptomes based on a selfness model stemming from thymic education. The thymus-likeness score (TLS) was validated on data from the Human Protein Atlas and then used to interrogate tumor recognizability across 32 solid tumor cohorts from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). A robust statistical pipeline was devised to identif

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is a common malignant skin tumor with invasive potential and risk of recurrence. This study investigated the anti-cSCC effects of luteolin in vitro and in vivo and explored the associated molecular mechanisms. The effects of luteolin on A431 cell viability were assessed by CCK-8 assay, and apoptosis was analyzed by Annexin V-FITC/propidium iodide (PI) double staining. qRT-PCR and Western blot analyses were performed to evaluate apoptosis-related factors and the EGFR/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Molecular docking was further conducted to explore the poten

INTRODUCTION: Lung (LCs) and thymic carcinoids (ThCs) belong to thoracic well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), whose therapeutic options for advanced stages are limited. In the era of precision medicine, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) remain a key focus of clinical investigation. This review evaluates the evolving role of TKIs in this setting.
AREAS COVERED: This critical review analyzes the clinical evidence from pivotal trials regarding FDA/EMA-approved TKIs and those in advanced phases of clinical investigation for thoracic NETs, including combination strategies and tumor mi

A 63-year-old woman presented with progressive facial edema. 18 F-FDG PET/CT showed a large soft tissue mass with heterogeneous hypermetabolism in the right atrium and superior vena cava, without distant metastases. The patient underwent surgical resection, and postoperative pathology confirmed a primary type B1 thymoma originating from the right atrium. To our knowledge, this case report details the 18 F-FDG PET/CT imaging features of primary intracardiac thymoma, which has rarely been described in the literature. It demonstrates the unique advantages of PET/CT in evaluating tumor malignant p

BACKGROUND: Although video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) thymectomy has been widely adopted for thymoma resection, its comparative effectiveness versus open approaches (thoracotomy and sternotomy) remains controversial. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate perioperative and long-term outcomes among these surgical modalities.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 317 consecutive patients with pathologically confirmed thymoma underwent surgical resection at Beijing Chest Hospital (2005-2024). Patients were stratified by approach: VATS (n = 178), unilateral thoracotomy (n = 73)

BACKGROUND: Locally advanced thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) may extend into the adjacent brachiocephalic vein (BCV), creating major technical challenges for resection. While BCV reconstruction is traditionally considered after tumor removal, its true clinical value compared with simple transection remains unclear.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients with TETs involving the BCV who underwent surgical resection at Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital between January 2013 and March 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Perioperative details, 30-day morbidity, and long-term outcomes were systematica

OBJECTIVE: When an invasive thymoma involves major vessels such as the superior vena cava (SVC), conventional management requires median sternotomy with en bloc resection and vascular reconstruction, which carries substantial surgical trauma and delayed recovery. This report presents a case of invasive thymoma invading the SVC and left innominate vein treated using a hybrid approach combining video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) with a limited sternal incision, in which the technical highlight was a Y-shaped reconstruction of the SVC and left innominate vein.
METHODS: A 39-year-old wom

Parallel to and after publication of the WHO 2024 classification of head and neck tumors, several developments concerning known existing salivary gland tumor entities, but also proposing new evolving tumor entities have been published. This review article describes the most important new developments in salivary gland pathology published through 2022-2025, that were not included in the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumours 2024. This review summarizes these recent developments in both the benign and the malignant tumor categories. Among the recently proposed entities a

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the thymus is extremely rare. Although thymic ACC is generally slow growing, complete surgical resection is essential due to its tendency for local invasion. Here, we report a case of primary thymic ACC successfully treated by complete resection using a single-port subxiphoid thoracoscopic approach. A 63-year-old asymptomatic male patient was referred after an anterior mediastinal mass was incidentally detected during a routine health screening. Imaging revealed a small, well-circumscribed tumor without evidence of invasion. At 2.2 cm, the lesion was a

The TNM classification applies to three types of thoracic tumors: lung cancer, thymic epithelial tumors (thymomas, neuroendocrine neoplasms, carcinomas), and pleural mesotheliomas. This 9th edition introduces two changes for the lung: category N2 (mediastinal lymph node metastases) is divided into N2a and N2b, when one N2 station or several N2 stations are affected, respectively, regardless of the number of lymph nodes; category M1c (multiple extrathoracic metastases) is divided into M1c1 and M1c2 when multiple extrathoracic metastases are present in one or more organs, respectively. There are

We present the case of a woman in her 40s who presented with progressive shortness of breath, facial flushing, tachycardia that worsened when supine and bilateral leg swelling. Initial evaluation included a chest X-ray, which revealed widened mediastinum and a transthoracic echocardiogram with evidence of cardiac tamponade. A pericardiocentesis was performed, draining 900 mL of haemorrhagic fluid. Subsequent CT imaging identified a large anterior mediastinal mass invading into the superior vena cava (SVC) and extending towards the right atrium. A needle biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of thymic

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune condition characterized by muscle weakness caused by antibodies targeting the postsynaptic neuromuscular junction. The majority of patients test positive for antibodies against the acetylcholine receptor (AChR) or muscle-specific kinase (MuSK). A minority of patients test negative for these antibodies and are referred to as double-seronegative MG (dSNMG), a condition that remains inadequately studied and incompletely characterized. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO registration: CRD420223

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder of the neuromuscular junction characterized by fluctuating skeletal muscle weakness. We report a 61-year-old woman presenting with progressive dysphagia as the sole initial symptom for 15 months, leading to diagnostic delay. Esophageal manometry suggested ineffective motility, and electroneuromyography was normal, reinforcing a non-neurological hypothesis. During hospitalization for worsening dysphagia, cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) incidentally revealed an anterior mediastinal nodule consistent with thymoma. Pulse corticosteroid the
