Magnetic resonance imaging findings of non-mass enhancements in the breast and their association with malignancy.

Our aim is to investigate the relationship between the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) features of non-mass enhancement (NME) lesions and malignancy. MRI findings of 200 and 2 NME lesions were retrospectively evaluated. Age, family history of breast cancer, lesion pathology results, and follow-up durations of the patients were obtained from medical records. Based on follow-up findings and pathology results, the lesions were classified into 3 groups as benign, high-risk, and malignant. The association between these groups and MRI features was analyzed statistically. Segmental (48.4%) and diffu

The association between global and prime diet quality scores and the risk of breast cancer: a case control study.

BACKGROUNDS: Despite established links between diet and breast cancer, the association of comprehensive diet quality indices specifically Global Diet Quality Score (GDQS) and Prime Diet Quality Score (PDQS) with BC risk remains underexplored. This case-control study evaluated the association between global and prime diet quality scores and the risk of breast cancer. METHODS: Dietary intake of 125 newly diagnosed, histopathologically confirmed breast cancer cases and 250 age-frequency-matched controls (women ≥30 years) at Shaqra General Hospital was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative

AI-based BRAIx risk score for the intermediate-term prediction of breast cancer: a population cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithms are being implemented in breast screening to detect breast cancers on mammographic images. We aimed to apply an epidemiological approach to demonstrate how a cancer detection algorithm can be leveraged as an intermediate-term predictor of breast cancer (current and 4-year risk) to deliver greater risk-based personalisation in screening mammography. METHODS: In this population cohort study, we used detection scores from an AI cancer detection algorithm (BRAIx AI Reader), which was calibrated using a training dataset of 397 648 women age

Breast Cancer Screening in Tunisia: A Cross-Sectional Study on Women's Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices.

INTRODUCTION: In Tunisia, the incidence and mortality rates of breast cancer are relatively high and are projected to remain a significant health burden by 2030. We aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Tunisian women regarding breast cancer screening and to determine the factors associated with good practice using multivariable regression. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study among adult female Tunisian population for 10 days period (from 6 till 16 October 2022), using an online self-administered survey. We assessed knowledge related to breast canc

Familial papillary thyroid cancer; A male case with breast and thyroid cancer and his three sisters with thyroid cancer: A case series and review of the literature.

Thyroid cancer is the most widespread endocrine malignancy. Of all the cases of thyroid cancer, approximately 95% arise from follicular cells. Familial non-medullary thyroid cancers constitute 3-9% of all the reported cases of thyroid cancer and are diagnosed by the presence of two or more first-degree relatives with cancer. Most familial cases of non-medullary thyroid cancer are caused by papillary thyroid cancer and its histological variants. Although some genes predisposing to familial papillary thyroid cancer have been identified, their functionality is unclear, and routine examination is

Germline BRCA testing in routine clinical practice: a single-center experience.

The identification of gBRCA1/2 mutations in breast cancer patients is crucial. Successful identification of the mutations has the potential to alter disease treatment and healthcare management of patients whose relatives harbor pathogenic/likely pathogenic (P/LP) variants. In this retrospective analysis, patient- and disease-specific medical data were analyzed in a cohort of breast cancer patients with a known gBRCA1/2 status who were treated between 2019-2021. The prevalence and type of gBRCA1/2 P/LP variants, and their relation to the histopathological data of the cancers, were studied. The

General practitioners' responses to dense breast notifications resulting from a screening mammography program.

Breast density reporting is recommended; however, guidance for general practitioners (GPs) is limited. This study investigates GPs' beliefs, attitudes, and practices within the only state-run Breast Screen program in Australia that has been notifying women if they have dense breasts for over a decade. A mixed-methods study was undertaken from four multi-GP practices. Qualitative interviews from GPs and de-identified data from a randomized sample of 692 women who attended screening mammography (2019-2022) were collated. Descriptive statistics, binomial regression for quantitative data, and both

Impact of Ethnicity on the Uptake of Risk Reducing Mastectomy in Unaffected BRCA1/2 and PALB2 Carriers in Canada.

BACKGROUND: While several studies have reported on factors influencing the uptake of risk-reducing mastectomy (RRM) in patients with germline pathogenic variants (gPV) in BRCA1/2, there remains a paucity of data regarding variations in uptake by ethnicity. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of unaffected female patients with a confirmed gPV in BRCA1/2 or PALB2 between March 2000 to March 2023 at two academic institutions in Montreal, Canada. Ethnicity was self-reported as: White/European, Black/African/Caribbean, Asian/Southeast Asian, Hispanic/South/Central American, Middle E

Breaking barriers to completing genetic testing for inherited breast cancer among at-risk Black women using a community-based participatory research approach.

National guidelines from the US Preventive Services Task Force and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network recommend the use of family-health-history (FHH)-based risk assessment tools to guide genetic testing (GT) among women with an increased risk of inherited cancer and inform personalized cancer risk management. Prior research has focused on attitudes toward and decisions about initial uptake of GT in Black patients but little is known about the factors that impact the subsequent completion of GT after they have already provided consent. Using a community-based participatory research (CBP

Reclassification of a BRCA2 variant, c.8487G > A (p.Gln2829Gln) located at 3' end of exon 19, from uncertain significance to likely pathogenic based on splicing alteration: a case report.

A BRCA2 germline variant, NM_000059.4: c.8487G > A (p.Gln2829Gln), was identified in a Japanese female with multifocal breast cancer and a notable family history of BRCA2-related cancers. While this synonymous variant was reported as a variant of uncertain significance, we suspected its pathogenicity considering its location at the 3' end of exon 19. This variant is absent in gnomAD and extremely rare in ToMMo jMorp 61KJPN database, with an allelic frequency of 0.000008. All three in silico tools predicted a splicing defect. The genetic landscape of breast cancer in young women from Morocco: implications for diagnosis and treatment.

Mortality rates from breast cancer in young women have fallen considerably in high-income countries but continue to rise in low-income countries such as Morocco. Young women with breast cancer face unique challenges due to the aggressive nature of the disease, the presence of aggressive subtypes (e.g., triple-negative, HER2-positive, and luminal B), and limited access to timely diagnosis and treatment. In addition, genetic factors play crucial roles in patient prognosis and response to treatment. The molecular landscape of breast cancer in young women has important implications for personalize

Association of high and moderate penetrance monogenic variants, polygenic risk, and family history with breast cancer in an ancestrally diverse population.

Limited data are available on genomic risk factors for breast cancer in diverse populations. We evaluated breast cancer risk conferred by high and moderate penetrance genes, polygenic risk scores (PRS), and family history (FH) in an ancestrally diverse biobank. We identified expected pathogenic variants (EPVs) in 14 genes among 30,223 sequenced individuals, including 15,919 unrelated women. Using electronic health records (EHRs), we evaluated associations of EPVs and PRS with breast cancer, stratified by FH and relative to individuals without EPVs and without FH. EPVs in high penetrance genes

Re-evaluating hereditary breast and ovarian cancer risk: clinical impact of updated multigene panel sequencing and genetic counseling.

An increased lifetime risk of ovarian cancer is observed among women with a family history of ovarian cancer, with or without breast cancer, as well as among carriers of pathogenic germline variants in ovarian cancer (OC) predisposition genes. Over the past two decades, additional OC–associated genes beyond BRCA1/2 have been identified, highlighting the need for updated genetic evaluation in women previously classified as high-risk without a known PV to ensure correct diagnosis and prevent overtreatment. This retrospective, quality assurance cohort study aimed to evaluate whether updated multi

Psychologically informed reminder messages for promoting BRCA1/2 carrier screening: evidence from a large-scale population-based study.

Psychologically Informed Reminder Messages (PIRMs) may promote health-behavior change, but their impact on preventive genetic screening is unclear. Due to low adherence to a screening program, Clalit Health Services initiated an intervention to encourage BRCA1/2 carrier screening in July 2022. This observational study assesses the effectiveness of the intervention in encouraging screening and its spillover effect on related healthcare utilization, focusing on Ashkenazi Jewish females aged 25-50 with no relevant cancer history. Patients were randomly assigned to receive one of five PIRMs. Four

Quality-of-life after risk-reducing mastectomy in women with increased risk of breast cancer: A longitudinal study.

Risk-reducing mastectomy substantially reduces breast cancer risk in women at increased genetic or familial risk; however, it may have an impact on quality-of-life. The aim of this longitudinal study was to analyze differences in quality-of-life over time in women at increased risk of breast cancer who underwent risk-reducing mastectomy. A total of 55 cisgender women at increased risk of breast cancer, due to BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants or a significant family history, participated in the study. Some of them had a prior diagnosis of breast cancer. Quality-of-life was assessed using EORTC Quali

Fear of diagnosis as a barrier to the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer diagnosis primarily occurs through mammography and biopsy. Treatment options span from surgery to chemotherapy, contingent on the cancer stage. While preventative measures such as lifestyle adjustments like weight management and reduced alcohol intake can reduce cases of breast cancer, challenges persist in accessing timely screening and treatment, especially in low- and middle-income areas of the country. METHODS: This survey engaged 59 US mothers 16 years and older with breast cancer. Administered to ensure distinct responses, it included questions covering family
