Renal Solitary Fibrous Tumor With Local Recurrence Following Complete Surgical Resection: A Case Report.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that most commonly arises in the pleura. Renal SFT is extremely uncommon, and local recurrence after complete surgical resection is rarely reported. In our case, an 81-year-old woman underwent laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for an incidentally detected left renal mass. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis confirmed a malignant SFT, with STAT6 and CD34 positivity, and classified it as intermediate risk according to the modified Demicco model. Despite negative imaging at six months, local recurrence was detected one year

Cadaveric and Ultrasound-Guided Evaluation of Two Needling Approaches Targeting the Pectoralis Minor Muscle: A Pilot Feasibility Study.

Background: The pectoralis minor muscle can be a source of musculoskeletal-related chest pain by contributing to thoracic outlet syndrome. Needling interventions applied to chest wall muscles have an inherent risk of puncturing sensitive structures, e.g., the pleura. Objective: The objective of this study was to preliminarily investigate the safety and accuracy of two needling approaches targeting the pectoralis minor muscle. Methods: A pincer- and flat-needle approach targeting the pectoralis minor muscle was conducted in five Thiel-embalmed cadavers and 10 healthy volunteers by an experience

Giant Malignant Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Pleura With Hypoglycemia: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence of giant malignant solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura with severe hypoglycemia as the initial symptom is exceedingly rare. This type of tumor requires extensive surgical resection, and the postoperative mortality rate is high. This article documents the nursing experience in such a case. CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 68-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of recurrent episodes of severe hypoglycemia. Examination revealed a giant malignant solitary fibrous tumor measuring 16.5 × 12.6 × 18.1 cm in the thoracic cavity. It was suspected that the patient's hypog

[Clinical Application of the International System for Serous Fluid Cytopathology
in the Stratified Diagnosis of Lung Cancer-associated Serous Effusions].

BACKGROUND: Serous effusion is a common complication in patients with advanced lung cancer, which often indicates that the tumor has metastasized to the pleura or other serosal membranes. It is essential to achieve an accurate diagnosis and pathological classification of tumor cells in effusion to guide clinical treatment. However, there are limitations to relying solely on morphological diagnosis, especially in atypical cases where diagnostic uncertainty is common. The International System for Serous Fluid Cytopathology (TIS) proposes a standardized hierarchical diagnostic framework that inte

Solitary Fibrous Tumors of the Breast: Report of Two Cases and Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms most commonly found in the pleura, but may also arise in other locations. Breast SFTs are extremely rare and infrequently reported. Descriptive data on the clinical, radiological, and pathological characteristics of breast SFTs are important for improving understanding of the disease, treatment strategies, and follow-up planning. METHODS: The pathology databases of major surgical centers in Hong Kong, covering January 2020 to June 2023, were assessed to identify cases with a diagnostic code for SFT. A systematic literature

CT predictors of visceral pleural invasion in subsolid nodular pulmonary adenocarcinoma: differences between direct and indirect tumor-pleura contact.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative accurate prediction of visceral pleural invasion (VPI) in subsolid nodular pulmonary adenocarcinoma (PA) can provide guidance for the surgical method of early lung cancer. The aim of this study is to explore the value of CT features in predicting VPI in clinical stage IA subsolid nodular peripheral PA with contact with the pleura. METHODS: A total of 464 patients across three hospitals were retrospectively analyzed. The internal dataset (n = 363) was divided into training cohort (n = 244) and internal validation cohort (n = 119) based on examination time, using a 7:3 r

Interventional management of persistent pleural air leaks.

A persistent air leak (PAL) of the pleura is a condition with a potentially fatal outcome. The development of such bronchopleural or alveolopleural fistulas is associated with a number of risk factors, including but not limited to: -a) Complications arising from larger resection of lung parenchyma; b) Emphysematous disease processes; c) Lower body mass index; d) Extensive infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and pleural empyema, among others. The primary causes of patient mortality are the occurrence of pulmonary infections and respiratory failure. Subsequent to the localization of the PAL

The Impact of Early CT on Outcomes for Empyema Patients Admitted Through the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: Empyema incidence is rising, with high mortality, and patients frequently requiring invasive procedural management. Early intervention is linked with reduced procedural invasiveness and rates of general complications. CT can aid diagnostic certainty and guide management approaches, but the value of CT timing on outcomes remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: Describe the association between CT timing and outcomes for patients diagnosed with Empyema who present through the emergency department. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of adult empyema patients was performed using TriNetX data (

Pseudo-senescence induced by palbociclib does not sensitise pleural mesothelioma cells to combinations with senolytics.

Pleural Mesothelioma (PM) is an aggressive neoplasm of the lung pleura with poor survival rates, highlighting the urgent need for novel therapeutic options. The CDK4/6 inhibitors abemaciclib and palbociclib have demonstrated promising results in patient-derived xenograft models of PM. In this study, we observed that palbociclib reduced proliferation, leading to increased cell size, enhanced SA-β-galactosidase activity, and elevated secretion of IL-6 and IL-8 (SASP), all of which are hallmarks of senescence. However, upon drug removal, the cells regrew. To enhance therapeutic efficacy, we attem

Perioperative Decision-Making for a Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Pleura: Lessons from Two Cases and Current Evidence.

Background and Clinical Significance: Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP), a rare mesenchymal neoplasm (<5% of pleural tumors), is often asymptomatic and incidentally detected. Preoperative differentiation between benign and malignant forms remains challenging, with 10-20% of lesions showing malignant behavior despite benign imaging. The role of conservative "watch-and-wait" versus early resection in small, asymptomatic cases is debated, prompting the need for structured perioperative decision-making based on imaging, pathology, and risk models. Case Presentation: We report two surgica

Comparative assessment of image quality and radiation dose: spectral purification computed tomography (Sn100kV) with adaptive iterative reconstruction for tuberculosis follow-up.

BACKGROUND: During tuberculosis treatment, multiple chest computed tomography (CT) scans are required for follow-up, each with an effective radiation dose (ED) of approximately 7 mSv. If treatment outcomes are poor or complications arise, additional scans may be necessary, thereby increasing the cumulative radiation burden. This study aimed to evaluate the effects on image quality of low-dose CT using spectral purification technology, in combination with varying levels of sinogram-affirmed iterative reconstruction (SAFIRE) algorithms, with the goal of identifying the optimal SAFIRE level for i

Large pleuropulmonary blastoma mimicking congenital pulmonary airway malformation in an infant: A case report.

Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a rare pediatric lung malignancy that primarily involves the lungs and pleura. PPB can be easily misdiagnosed as congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) based on its cystic features. We report the case of an infant who presented to the emergency department with fever and respiratory distress. The patient tested positive for COVID-19, and imaging was initially suggestive of large CPAM in the right hemithorax causing compression of the right lung and midline shift to the left. Imaging also showed two hypodense lesions, one on the upper pole of the right

T-lymphoblastic lymphoma presenting as massive pleuro-pericardial effusions: a rare diagnostic challenge in TB endemic regions.

A married woman in her early 30s presented with 2 months of dry cough, progressive dyspnoea and weight loss. Imaging revealed massive right pleural and severe pericardial effusions with a large anterior mediastinal mass. Initial lymphocyte-predominant exudative effusion suggested tuberculous pleuritis, but cytology was inconclusive. Thoracoscopic pleural biopsy with immunohistochemistry showed TdT-positive and CD7-positive lymphoid cells, establishing a diagnosis of T-lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL) involving the pleura, pericardium and mediastinum. She received acute lymphoblastic leukaemia-ty
