Brain hemorrhage associated with a mixed parasitic infection in a foreign technical intern trainee: A case report.

In recent years, the number of foreign technical intern trainees in Japan has been steadily increasing. As a result, opportunities to treat foreign patients with different cultures and customs have also increased and so has the possibility of encountering cases that have not been previously experienced. We report a case of a 25-year-old Cambodian man who is residing in Japan as a technical intern trainee. He presented with a chief complaint of headache and dizziness. After further examination, a diagnosis of intracerebral hemorrhage was made. Blood tests revealed peripheral eosinophilia, and c

Natural History and the Burden of Malaria During the First Year of Life in the High-Transmission Setting of Uganda.

Infants under 1 year of age are considered partially protected from malaria because of maternal antibodies and fetal hemoglobin. However, emerging evidence suggests that the malaria burden in this age group may be underestimated. A cohort of 855 infants in Busia District, Uganda, was enrolled in the present study to characterize malaria incidence and parasite prevalence during the first year of life and to identify risk factors for these outcomes. The study was conducted from 2021 to 2025, before the malaria vaccine roll-out. Infants born to HIV-uninfected women were enrolled at 4-8 weeks of a

Potential impact of antimalarial chemoprophylaxis with doxycycline on antimicrobial resistance genes in the enteric microbiome of deployed German soldiers - a case-control-study.

BACKGROUND: Antimalarial chemoprophylaxis with doxycycline is taken by German soldiers on tropical deployments. In a case-control-assessment, diagnostic metagenomics was applied to comparatively assess antimicrobial resistance genes in enteric microbiomes of soldiers with and without medical history of doxycycline-based antimalarial chemoprophylaxis on deployment. METHODS: Two groups of 26 military deployment returnees, each either exposed or non-exposed to antimalarial chemoprophylaxis with doxycycline, were matched by deployment site and period, age and sex in declining order of prioritizat

Attention for Compliance: Visual Media in Second World War Anti-Malaria Efforts.

Malaria casualties severely affected the US war effort during the Second World War. Tens of thousands of soldiers developed sicknesses resulting from inadequate mosquito control and chemoprophylaxis. Much of the operational failure was due to soldier noncompliance with measures and medicines that were effective but far from perfect. An extensive media campaign was conducted in parallel with military and medical efforts to convince soldiers to cooperate with official efforts to control malaria. Different approaches seen in posters and films included trying humorous education, asserting command

Travel-associated cutaneous larva migrans: Clinical recognition and management of an imported case in Albania.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a parasitic skin infestation typically caused by animal hookworm larvae, most often Ancylostoma braziliense and Ancylostoma caninum. The disease is an erythematous, serpiginous, pruritic, cutaneous eruption caused by accidental percutaneous penetration and subsequent migration of larvae. It is commonly reported in tropical or subtropical regions but may appear elsewhere through international travel. We describe the case of a female traveller who developed a serpiginous, pruritic lesion on her foot after exposure to river water while visiting Oman. The diagnosis

Genomic Characterization of a Locally Transmitted Leishmania mexicana Isolate from Texas.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis, which is caused by Leishmania species transmitted by sandflies, is increasingly recognized in subtropical, higher-resource regions, including the southern United States. The first whole-genome sequence of Leishmania mexicana (L. mexicana) is reported from an autochthonous US case in a 3-year-old boy from Ellis County, Texas, with no travel history. Genomic DNA was sequenced using Illumina (San Diego, CA) technology. Phylogenomic analysis of nuclear and mitochondrial single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) confirmed the isolate as L. mexicana, clustering within the L. me

Clinical decision-making in gastric taeniasis: risks of endoscopic removal and role of staged therapy.

This case describes a rare presentation of gastric taeniasis in a young woman with chronic atrophic gastritis and subcutaneous lesions consistent with cysticercosis. Stool microscopy confirmed Taenia spp eggs, though species identification was limited by the absence of morphological or molecular confirmation. While clinical evidence strongly suggested Taenia solium, this limitation is acknowledged. The case underscores the importance of clinical judgement in avoiding endoscopic removal, given risks of incomplete extraction, rupture and anaphylaxis. A staged pharmacologic regimen was employed:

[Pediatric Alveolar Echinococcosis with Pulmonary and Hepatic Involvement and Literature Review: A Rare Case].

Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus multilocularis, is a rare but potentially fatal zoonotic infection. AE most commonly presents with multiple cysts in the liver, may spread to other organs through infiltration or metastasis and can mimic malignancy with fatal consequences if not diagnosed early. Its occurrence in childhood is extremely rare and simultaneous hepatic and pulmonary involvement has been reported only in a few cases. This report aimed to discuss a pediatric AE case with concurrent hepatic and pulmonary involvement, initially misdiagnosed as malignancy, in the ligh

Natural history and impact of Giardia lamblia on child growth attainment and associated pathway-specific biomarkers in a Nicaraguan birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Giardia lamblia (Giardia) is one of the most common intestinal parasitic infections globally, with an estimated 280 million symptomatic infections annually. In children from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), Giardia is highly prevalent and has been associated with loss of intestinal barrier function, nutrient-metabolic dysregulation, and linear growth impairment, but specific mechanisms linking Giardia to these outcomes remain poorly understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used data and samples from a subset of 76 children in a longitudinal birth cohort in Nicaragua to evaluat

Cystic echinococcosis in Austria 2009-2024: national surveillance and two rare cases of musculoskeletal manifestations including clinical management strategies.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by Echinococcus granulosus, is a parasitic disease that predominantly involves the liver and the lungs, whereas primary involvement of the musculoskeletal system is rare and diagnostically challenging. This study examines isolated musculoskeletal echinococcosis (MSKE) through two uncommon cases treated at an Austrian tertiary centre and proposes a tailored diagnostic and therapeutic approach. To contextualise their rarity, national epidemiological data on CE in Austria over a 15-year period are also presented. METHODS: We queried our institutiona

Fascioliasis presenting as non-resolving liver abscess: Case series from eastern India.

Fascioliasis is a foodborne trematode infection caused by Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica. It is caused by ingestion of undercooked aquatic vegetation containing infective stage metacercariae. Symptoms in the acute stage include fever, abdominal pain and eosinophilia and in the chronic stage symptoms of biliary obstruction or cholangitis. Very few fascioliasis cases have been reported from India. In the last 1 year, we diagnosed six cases of fascioliasis who presented with acute stage symptoms. They were diagnosed by characteristic dietary history, liver abscess on imaging and eggs of
