Self-reported acceptable pain intensity is associated with psychosocial burden beyond pain severity in chronic pain patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported acceptable pain intensity is collected as part of intake procedures in some pain clinic settings, yet has rarely been examined in relation to psychosocial outcomes. This study investigated whether acceptable pain intensity is associated with psychosocial symptom burden (somatization, anxiety, sleep impairment, perceived stress, depression, and pain-related disability) in chronic pain patients after adjusting for pain severity and trauma history. METHODS: Secondary analysis of 822 chronic pain patients from a German university pain clinic (previously published cohort)

Determinants of vulnerability and onset of depression during pregnancy: Evidence from the PRESeNT cohort.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal depression is a major public health concern, yet the factors distinguishing clinically manifest symptoms from underlying vulnerability remain poorly understood. This study examined a range of dimensions to identify determinants of antenatal depression and subclinical risk. METHODS: Two hundred thirty-one pregnant women participating in the PRESeNT cohort study have been stratified as controls (n = 71), at risk of depression during pregnancy (n = 107), or with antenatal depressive symptoms (n = 53). Assessments included psychological measures (depressive symptoms, general

Using an oral history approach to understand perspectives of intergenerational trauma in African American women.

This brief report explores how African American women describe the intergenerational transmission of trauma and its perceived influence on stress and cardiometabolic health. Using an Oral History approach, semi-structured interviews were analyzed from participants in the parent HARMONY study. Analytic themes spanned work-life imbalance, medical racism, hypervigilance, reproductive autonomy, and physical safety. Women described balancing "controlled emotions" and "controlled actions" to navigate relationships and maintain bodily control. Although findings are preliminary and non-generalizable,

Post-traumatic stress in cancer patients: prevalence and psychosocial correlates.

AIMS: Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are a substantial yet underrecognised mental health concern in oncology. Large-scale epidemiological data across diverse cancer types are scarce. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and to identify socio-demographic and psychosocial correlates in a large, unselected outpatient cohort. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 4,103 adult outpatients with solid tumours or haematologic malignancies were screened during routine care using the PTSS-8-Cancer scale. Socio-demographic, clinical and psychosocia

Veterans' positive parenting practices and satisfaction over time: Examining the impact of moral injury, posttraumatic stress, and internalizing symptoms.

Little is known about the association between moral injury (MI) and parenting. Although there is evidence that psychological symptoms impact veterans' parenting, few longitudinal studies exist. The current study used parallel process latent growth curve models to explore the effects of MI and other psychological symptoms on positive parenting practices and satisfaction in a sample of U.S. veterans who served following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks (n = 1,078). On average, positive parenting practices, α = -.09, p < .001, and satisfaction, α = -.13, p < .001, declined over time. MI

Childhood Trauma, Recent Stressors, and Risk of Depression Relapse in Late-Life Depression.

BACKGROUND: Recent stressors have been linked to poor outcomes of late-life depression (LLD), including relapse. Emerging evidence has linked adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to the occurrence of LLD. We sought to examine the relationships between recent exposure to stressful life events and ACEs with relapse following remission among older adult. METHODS: In this cohort study, depressed older adults (age ≥65) were provided standard antidepressant medications by a study psychiatrist. Each participant provided responses to the ACEs Questionnaire and to a list of questions regarding stresso

Caring for Aging Parents After Childhood Maltreatment: A Qualitative Study of Japanese Adult-Child Caregivers.

OBJECTIVES: Research on adult-child caregivers with childhood maltreatment (CM) histories has been conducted predominantly in North America. This qualitative study examined the psychological conflicts and protective factors among Japanese adult-child caregivers with CM histories. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 Japanese adult-child caregivers (5 men, 5 women; mean age = 60.40, SD = 6.13). Data were analyzed using the Modified Grounded Theory Approach. RESULTS: Caregiving often reactivated negative childhood emotions, suggesting that unresolved trauma may also be re

Family-Centered Care and Outcomes of Child Flourishing and Family Resilience and Connection.

IMPORTANCE: Family-centered care is an approach to pediatric health care that recognizes the essential role of the family in ensuring child health and well-being, seeks to establish collaborative partnerships among the child, family, and health care team, and provides a framework for implementing trauma-informed care. However, the association between receiving family-centered care and key measures of child and family well-being, including among families with a history of trauma and adversity, is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To examine associations between family-centered care and child flourishing an

Prior Sexual Violence, PTSD Symptoms, and Recovery Trajectories After New Trauma.

IMPORTANCE: Prior work demonstrates that earlier trauma exposure increases the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a subsequent trauma, and cross-sectional work has also identified sexual violence (SV) as the form of traumatic stressor with the greatest conditional risk for PTSD. However, little work explores these findings longitudinally with a comparison group with no history of SV. OBJECTIVE: To examine the differences in PTSD symptoms after a new incident of trauma exposure in survivors with and without an earlier history of SV. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this c

School shootings and mental health outcomes: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Recent data indicate a rising frequency of school shootings over the past two decades. Although these events are relatively rare within the broader context of firearm violence, more than 357 000 students have been exposed to firearm violence in primary and secondary schools since 1999. However, the psychological impacts remain poorly understood. This scoping review synthesises existing evidence and highlights gaps for further research. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Criminal Justice Abstracts to identify empirical studies on s

Health challenges of older women following attempted intimate partner homicide.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While some research exists on women who have survived attempted intimate partner homicide (IPH), studies focusing on survivors aged 60 years and older and how they cope with health concerns remain scarce. Guided by intersectionality as a theoretical framework, this study examined older women's experiences of managing their health in the aftermath of surviving a violent attack by a male partner, considering how intersecting identities such as age, gender, and survivorship shape their health-related challenges. The insights gained could inform targeted interventions an

Association between Multitype Child Maltreatment and Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Effects of Health Literacy and Perceived Stress.

Child maltreatment is one of the most traumatic experiences that affect the development of children and adolescents. However, few studies have examined whether a history of greater exposure to multiple types of child maltreatment would impair the victims' life satisfaction. This study applied the multitype maltreatment framework to a sample of adolescents from rural China to investigate life satisfaction of children who have experienced multitype maltreatment and to examine the mediating effects of health literacy and perceived stress. This study employed a cross-sectional survey design and us

Predicting Subsequent Overuse Knee Injury Among Military Cadets and Midshipmen.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries are prevalent during military training, with overuse knee injuries representing a major source of medical attention and time-loss. The early transition into military academy life is marked by considerable physical and psychological stressors, creating a high-risk window for injury development-particularly among individuals with an injury history. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop and internally validate a multivariable prediction model for overuse knee injuries among first-year military cadets with a history of knee injury. 'The cycle must stop here': Patterns of intergenerational transmission of traumatizing WWII experiences in three generations.

This study investigates the intergenerational consequences of World War II (WWII) experiences in the Netherlands. It explores how trauma and resilience were transmitted across three generations and the role of communication in shaping these patterns. In 2021 and 2022, thirty semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten families, each including one respondent from three generations. First-generation participants had experienced potentially traumatizing events, including persecution and wartime violence. Findings indicate that intergenerational impacts are heterogeneous: in some families,

A European paramedic curriculum for geriatric emergency medicine developed via a modified Delphi technique.

BACKGROUND: Older emergency patients currently account for most European emergency medical service dispatches. Due to demographic changes and increasing comorbidities in advanced age, this number is expected to rise substantially in the coming years. Prehospital professionals require specialised training to provide high-quality care for complex, multimorbid patients. The aim of this study is to define minimum competencies for paramedic education in Europe on the management of emergencies in older adults. METHODS: A modified electronic Delphi study was performed from January 2023 to November 2

Psychological outcomes and resilience among evacuees and non-evacuees following the October 7 Hamas attack in Israel.

The October 7th, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel's southern territory marked one of the most devastating events in the nation's history, and the ensuing war with Hamas in the south and Hezbollah in the north resulted in the internal displacement of more than a quarter million Israelis. In the current study we examined the impact of these traumatic events on 636 Israeli Jewish evacuees (n = 300) and non-evacuees (n = 336), focusing on the differential effects of personal resilience, community resilience, and trust in formal authorities on post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and life functioning.

Mixed evidence for stress effects on cortisol-testosterone coupling in Syrian refugee and Jordanian non-refugee adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Pubertal development is governed by the HPA and HPG axes. Co-upregulation of the HPA/HPG during adolescence is hypothesized to produce positive cortisol-testosterone coupling to promote developmental demands of puberty, then attenuate post-puberty. However, effects of trauma and poverty-related stress on hormonal coupling are less substantiated. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional biological, sociodemographic, and displacement/poverty-related stress data from Syrian refugee and Jordanian non-refugee adolescents living in Northern Jordan (n = 768). We quantified free cortisol an
