Falling short of fatherhood ideals: Masculine gender role stress and emotion dysregulation as mechanisms linking childhood trauma to fathers' depressive symptoms.

Parental depressive symptoms have been primarily documented in mothers during the first postpartum year. Yet, growing evidence shows that fathers also experience depressive symptoms and that these symptoms may persist as parents navigate the challenges of raising toddlers. A history of cumulative childhood trauma is a known risk factor for parental depressive symptoms, but the mechanisms explaining this association in fathers remain understudied. One significant correlate of depressive symptoms in fathers is masculine gender role stress, the distress arising from a perceived inability to meet

When Trauma Crosses Generations: Mechanisms, Clinical Patterns and Therapeutic Implications of Transgenerational Trauma-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Transgenerational trauma (TT)/Intergenerational trauma (IT) is the transmission of the effects of traumatic experiences of parents to their children, who have not themselves experienced traumatic events. This transmission occurs through neurobiological and metabolic changes and the environment in which they were raised. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched from 2005 to 2025. Studies focusing on adult offspring, exposure to ancestral trauma, biological markers (DNA methylation, co

When strengths may become vulnerabilities: Reconsidering the role of social support and psychological strengths among sexual assault survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Many women who experience child or adolescent sexual assault (CASA) are revictimized as adults. Although researchers have made considerable progress in understanding mechanisms that increase risk for adult revictimization, including CASA-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), few have explored factors that protect against this association. Drawing from the resilience portfolio model and prior research, this study examined perceived social support, gratitude, self-compassion, and optimism as potential strengths-based factors that may reduce revictimization risk. METHOD: Parti

Associations Among Natural Disaster Exposure, Childhood Adversity, and Cognitive Functioning in Older Americans in the Health and Retirement Study.

Although adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to poorer later-life cognitive function, little is known about how natural disasters, which may be perceived as stressful or traumatic, influence this relationship. Using the Health and Retirement Study, we investigated whether disaster exposure moderates the ACE-cognition association in 12,951 adults aged 50+ years [Mage = 64.6, SD = 10.1]. Cognitive performance score (range: 0-27) was calculated from word recall, serial 7's, and backward counting. At least one ACE was experienced by 35.6% and a natural disaster by 15.4% of the sample.

Assessment of depression and anxiety after exposure to psychological trauma among females in Jordan: A cross-sectional study.

Patients who have been exposed to psychological trauma during their lifetime, regardless of the severity of the trauma, are more likely to experience depression and anxiety. However, there are limited data on the prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders among females after exposure to trauma in Jordan. This is a cross-sectional study using an online survey that was conducted between the start of April 2025 and the end of June 2025. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 questionnaires were used to evaluate depression and anxiety after exposure to psychologi

Trauma-informed intervention to reduce substance use and to support community transition [TRUST]: Study protocol for a type 1 effectiveness-implementation hybrid trial to reduce overdose risk among justice-involved women.

BACKGROUND: The integration of trauma-informed interventions for justice-involved women into SUD treatment is a key strategy for mitigating overdose risk. Coupling the unique overdose risk factors for women with their histories of violent victimization and related trauma, overdose intervention approaches for women must be engaging, targeted, and trauma-informed. METHODS: This study utilizes a type 1 hybrid effectiveness and implementation trial to examine an innovative trauma-inforned intervention for justice-involved women (N = 264) in corrections-based substance use treatment during the tra

"More in solidarity": COVID-19-related racism and critical consciousness among Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders.

This study examined how Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPIs) described their experiences and impacts of COVID-19-related racism, contextualized in a broader history of sociopolitical oppression. Guided by Cheng, Kim, et al. (2021) tripartite model of collective psychosocial resilience, we further hypothesized that COVID-19-related racism might be a catalyst for AANHPIs developing critical consciousness to resist racism. AANHPI adults (n = 448; Mage = 26.43) were asked how their lives were impacted by anti-Asian racism during the COVID-19 pandemic and completed sur

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Their Relationship With Psychological Disorders and Violent Criminal Behaviour Within a Forensic Psychiatric Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events occurring before the age of 18 that may undermine a child's sense of safety, stability and attachment. ACEs can have lifelong consequences, including an elevated risk of developing psychological disorders and an increased likelihood of engaging in delinquent or violent behaviour later in life. Clinical practice suggests that many forensic psychiatric patients have a history of ACEs, but scientific research on ACEs within this population remains limited. AIM: To study the prevalence of ACEs before the age of 18 within a larg

Psychological heterogeneity and transitions of non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents: a two-wave longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common among adolescents and is associated with substantial psychological distress and elevated suicide risk. From an ecological-developmental perspective, adolescent NSSI may arise from interacting influences across individual vulnerabilities, developmental adversity, family relationships, and social resources. However, most previous studies have examined these factors using variable-centered approaches, which may overlook psychosocial heterogeneity within clinical populations. This study aimed to examine three-year transitions in NSSI among psyc

[Application of Trauma-Informed Care in a Patient With Schizophrenia and Childhood Trauma].

This article presents a case study on the application of trauma-informed care on a male patient with schizophrenia and a history of childhood trauma. The nursing process was designed using the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration framework. For this case study, the "4R" core assumptions were transposed into five actionable principles (safety, trustworthiness, collaboration, empowerment, and choice), which guided all of the provided interventions. From July 14 to August 7, 2025, the nursing care focused on promoting psychological and emotional safety, facilitating the co-re

Role of Intelligence in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Development: A Systematic Review.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with a range of cognitive alterations; however, the relationship between PTSD and intelligence remains unclear. The aim of this systematic review was to examine potential differences in intelligence associated with exposure to traumatic events and/or a diagnosis of PTSD in adults aged 18 years and older. A systematic search was conducted across three major academic databases-PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and Web of Science-to identify empirical studies assessing intelligence or closely related cognitive constructs in individuals with PTSD or a hist

Within-nation variation in war exposure and psychological and physical adjustment.

Extensive evidence suggests that war-related trauma negatively affects health, yet its long-term and transgenerational effects on psychological and physical adjustment remain poorly understood. This study examines whether individuals who experienced greater war exposure in early childhood-specifically variation in bombardment intensity across German municipalities during the Second World War-show lower, similar, or better psychological (life satisfaction, affective well-being, and mental health) and physical adjustment (self-rated and physical health) in late adulthood compared to less exposed

Development and feasibility testing of a PrEP uptake and adherence intervention for women with trauma-related mental health conditions: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Experiencing trauma increases susceptibility to HIV among women in the Southern U.S, through factors such as condomless sex, coerced sex, and substance use. Despite the effectiveness of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), uptake remains low due to various barriers such as low perceived risk, lack of awareness, perceived stigma, and systemic inequities. Tailored interventions are crucial for improving access to PrEP for this vulnerable population. METHODS: The purpose of the study is to develop an integrated mental health clinic-based behavioral intervention for increasing PrEP uptake

The mongrel complex: identification with the aggressor, self-hatred and the drive to rest (Ruhetrieb).

This article explores Ferenczi's (1932, 1933) concept of "identification with the aggressor" as an effect of psychic trauma, highlighting three of its vicissitudes: submissive love, destructive hatred, and self-hatred. We take a closer look at the fate of self-hatred, illustrating it with the "mongrel complex," a term coined by Brazilian writer Nelson Rodrigues (1958), alongside biographical excerpts related to the antisemitism experienced by Freud and his father, Jacob. Additionally, we point out an unprecedented association between Ferenczi's trauma theory and Freud's studies on Witz (wit),

Effects of childhood trauma on indicators of daily suicide risk: The role of stress and sleep.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing attention of the effects of childhood trauma on suicidality, its links to day-to-day fluctuations in suicide risk indicators (defeat, entrapment) and the mediating roles of daily sleep and hassle appraisals remain unclear. This study (1) tests associations between childhood trauma and daily sleep, hassles, and suicide risk indicators; (2) examines mediation by daily sleep and hassle appraisals; and (3) assesses whether trauma moderates daily sleep/hassle-suicide risk relationships. METHODS: A total of 168 participants with a recent history of suicide ideation or at

Freud, Sebald and the head of Medusa: The unconscious sense of guilt.

This paper explores Freud's concept of unconscious guilt (Freud, S. 1923. "The Ego and the Id". In The Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud, Vol. 19. 1-66), as illuminated in Sebald's masterpiece, Austerlitz (Sebald, W. G. 2001. Austerlitz, Translated by Anthea Bell. London: Penguin Books). Both writers examine the human impulse to look away from suffering, personal and collective, and the guilt inherent both in avoidance and in bearing witness. Sebald, preoccupied with Germany's post-war "self-amnesia" (Sebald, W. G. 2003. On the Natural History of Destruction

Sleep and emotional memory of preschool children adopted from foster care: a comparison with a community sample.

OBJECTIVE: Children who spend time in foster care are at risk for adverse developmental outcomes, including sleep problems. Yet, research examining sleep and emotional memory has primarily focused on children with no history of foster care placement. Additionally, most accounts of sleep problems among children with a foster care history rely on caregiver-report rather than objective measures. This study examined emotional memory and sleep using both objective and subjective reports. METHODS: Participants included 3- to 5-year-old children who were adopted from foster care in the U.S. (n = 32)
