Nystagmus in Clinical Practice: From Diagnosis to Treatment-A Comprehensive Review.

Nystagmus, a common yet intricate ocular movement disorder, significantly contributes to visual morbidity in the paediatric and adult populations. Defined by involuntary, rhythmic, to-and-fro eye movements, this condition may manifest as an isolated anomaly or harbour more serious ocular or systemic pathologies. Its presence often provides vital diagnostic clues, emphasizing the importance of thorough evaluation to uncover potentially hidden underlying conditions. These mechanisms may range from dysfunction in the neural pathways to genetic mutations that affect ocular motor control. Nystagmus

Diabetic retinopathy screening using artificial intelligence and its predictors among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in an urban area of Durgapur.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia either due to insulin resistance or due to relative or absolute insulin deficiency. Poorly controlled DM may result in both macrovascular and/or microvascular complications like diabetic retinopathy [DR]. Dilated eye examination is the most commonly employed method to diagnose DR. Nonmydriatic artificial intelligence [AI]-based technologies are the now available to screen DR. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in urban field practice area of our medical college for 2

The relationship between confidence and gaze-at-nothing oculomotor dynamics during decision-making.

How does confidence relate to oculomotor dynamics during decision-making? Do oculomotor dynamics reflect deliberation and the buildup of confidence in the absence of visual stimuli? Here we examine the hypothesis that working memory, deliberation, and confidence warp oculomotor dynamics, both in the presence and absence of visual stimuli. We analyzed oculomotor dynamics in a decision-making task in which participants were provided with an abstract context in which to make the decision, and two similar option images which became eventually invisible. We show that fixations between the empty loc

Transformer-Based Detection and Clinical Evaluation System for Torsional Nystagmus.

Motivation: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is characterized by torsional nystagmus induced by changes in head position, where accurate quantitative assessment of subtle torsional eye movements is essential for precise diagnosis. Conventional videonystagmography (VNG) techniques face challenges in accurately capturing the rotational components of pupil movements, and existing automated methods typically exhibit limited performance in identifying torsional nystagmus. Methodology: The objective of this study was to develop an automated system capable of accurately and quantitatively

The temporal context of eye contact influences perceptions of communicative intent.

This study examined the perceptual dynamics that influence the evaluation of eye contact as a communicative display. Participants (n = 137) completed a task where they decided if agents were inspecting or requesting one of three objects. Each agent shifted its gaze three times per trial, with the presence, frequency and sequence of eye contact displays manipulated across six conditions. We found significant differences between all gaze conditions. Participants were most likely, and fastest, to perceive a request when eye contact occurred between two averted gaze shifts towards the same object.

Detecting papilloedema as a marker of raised intracranial pressure using artificial intelligence: A systematic review.

Automated detection of papilloedema using artificial intelligence (AI) and retinal images acquired through an ophthalmoscope for triage of patients with potential intracranial pathology could prove to be beneficial, particularly in resource-limited settings where access to neuroimaging may be limited. However, a comprehensive overview of the current literature on this field is lacking. We conducted a systematic review on the use of AI for papilloedema detection by searching four databases: Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore. Included studies were assessed for quality of repo

Gauze detection and segmentation in laparoscopic liver surgery: a multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical gauze is commonly used in laparoscopic procedures. However, due to its small size, limited visibility to the naked eye, and subtle tactile presence, gauze can easily be overlooked during surgery. PURPOSE: To support surgeons in detecting gauze, reduce the risk of omission, and enhance surgical safety and efficiency, we developed a deep learning framework designed to identify gauze in laparoscopic liver surgeries. METHODS: In total, 33 laparoscopic liver surgery videos were collected from 2 hospitals and used as internal and external datasets. Deep learning models were tr

In-Context Learning for Data-Efficient Diabetic Retinopathy Detection via Multimodal Foundation Models.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate whether in-context learning (ICL), a prompt-based learning mechanism enabling multimodal foundation models to rapidly adapt to new tasks without retraining or large annotated datasets, can achieve comparable diagnostic performance to domain-specific foundation models. Specifically, we use diabetic retinopathy (DR) detection as an exemplar task to probe if a multimodal foundation model (Google Gemini 1.5 Pro), employing ICL, can match the performance of a domain-specific model (RETFound) fine-tuned explicitly for DR detection from color fundus photographs

An optical meta-image-processor for enhanced imaging through strongly scattering media.

Strongly scattering conditions are detrimental to imaging. Conventional methods rely solely on post-processing techniques to enhance the ballistic components of an obscured target to recover the image; however, they struggle in complex conditions where the ballistic components are heavily overwhelmed by scattering. In this work, we present an optical meta-image-processor (MIP) that tailors the scattered point spread function of the imaging system to enable high-quality, deep imaging through strongly scattering media. The MIP performs both Laplacian and Gaussian operations in a single device, e
