Mandibular Mini-Implant-Supported Multiloop Edgewise Archwire Therapy for Skeletal Class II Malocclusion: A Comparative Cohort Study.

Skeletal Class II malocclusion with deep overbite can be treated using multiloop edgewise archwire (MEAW) therapy combined with Class II elastics. However, conventional dental anchorage may cause undesirable dentoalveolar effects, particularly mandibular incisor proclination. This study compared immediate post-treatment cephalometric and patient-reported outcomes of MEAW therapy using mandibular mini-implant-supported modified Class II elastics versus conventional long Class II elastics. This non-randomized bidirectional cohort study included 20 patients (10 per group) who underwent cephalomet

Odontogenic Keratocysts in the Anterior Midline Region: A Case Series and Literature Review.

This case series describes three midline odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) and reviews the associated literature. All three patients were male; two lesions were maxillary. All lesions were surgically excised, with no recurrence. A search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus identified 33 reported cases of midline OKC, including this series. Of these, 64% (21/33) were male, and age ranged from 6 to 80 years (mean 39.8 ± 20.3). The mandible was affected in 67% (22/33). Excision was the predominant treatment (94%, 31/33), with adjunctive cauterization in 30% (10/33) and decompression in 15% (5/33). Among c

Additively Manufactured Implants for Mandibular Overdentures: RCT Part 1 - Clinical and Peri-Implant Outcomes.

This study reported preliminary clinical outcomes of a randomized clinical trial comparing immediate and conventional loading protocols for mandibular overdentures supported by two narrow-diameter implants with a regular platform manufactured by additive technology. The focus was on primary implant stability, assessed using insertion torque and the implant stability quotient (ISQ). Sixteen completely edentulous participants (11 men, 5 women; mean age: 67.7 ± 7.6 years) received new complete dentures prior to surgery and were followed for up to 180 days, depending on the outcome assessed. Comparison of subperiosteal, short, and standard endosseous implants in the severely atrophic edentulous mandible: a three-dimensional finite element stress analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of the severely atrophic edentulous mandible without complex augmentation remains a clinical challenge. With advances in digital design and fabrication, alternative implants such as short endosseous and subperiosteal implants have emerged as viable options. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the stress distributions in bone and implants under functional forces using three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A virtual model of a severely atrophic mandible was constructed based on tomographic data. Three implant configurations we

Agreement and reproducibility of intraoral scan- versus CBCT-based three-dimensional implant position assessment in the posterior mandible - a paired in vitro method-comparison study.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional postoperative implant assessment is increasingly performed using intraoral scan (IOS) superimposition as a radiation-free alternative to cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). However, it remains unclear to what extent IOS- and CBCT-based measurements agree and how reproducibility changes across posterior mandibular configurations. METHODS: In this paired in vitro method-comparison study, based on the experimental platform of a previous study, 60 implants placed at Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI) positions 35, 36, 45, 46 and 47 in bounded edentulous space

The Hyoid Bone in Robin Sequence: Morphology and Position in the Context of Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Robin Sequence (RS) is a congenital condition marked by micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction. Patients with RS exhibit anatomical differences in the hyoid bone, a key mediator of swallowing and respiration. Severe RS is treated with mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) to lengthen the mandible and increase oropharyngeal space, the latter thought to be caused by changes in hyoid position. Here, we test this hypothesis by quantitatively evaluating 3D hyoid position and morphology in patients with RS and comparing them to pediatric controls. METHODS: Computed tomog

Prevalence and patterns of congenital tooth agenesis in children: a mixed-method study on parental awareness.

BACKGROUND: Congenital tooth agenesis is one of the most common developmental dental anomalies in children and may lead to functional, esthetic, and psychosocial consequences if not diagnosed and managed early. While its prevalence has been widely investigated, data regarding parental awareness and communication following diagnosis remain limited. METHODS: This mixed-method study included a retrospective radiographic evaluation and a prospective telephone survey. Panoramic radiographs of 3,550 children aged 7-15 years who attended a university pediatric dentistry clinic between 2020 and 2025

CBCT features of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia with coexisting lesions at different maturation stages: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FLCOD) is a begin fibro-osseous lesion occurring in the tooth-bearing regions of the jaws and is characterized by replacement of normal bone with fibrous connective tissue and cementum-like mineralized material. Most patients are asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally during radiographic examinations, and the condition may be misdiagnosed because of overlapping imaging features with other jaw lesions. Because the disease is usually asymptomatic and exhibits imaging features that overlap with those of several odontogenic and inflammatory lesion

Atypical Stafne bone defect: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Atypically located Stafne bone defects (SBDs) may be challenging to identify because they deviate from the typical posterior mandibular presentation. This systematic review aims to analyze and synthesize the radiographic, anatomical, and histological characteristics of atypically located SBDs reported in the literature and to assist clinicians in orienting the diagnostic hypothesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases up to January 2026. Mandibular Chondrosarcoma Mimicking an Odontogenic Infection: A Case Report.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor exhibiting cartilaginous differentiation. It is a relatively common primary malignant bone tumor, but its occurrence in the jaws is rare, particularly in the mandible. The clinical presentation may be nonspecific and may mimic odontogenic or inflammatory conditions, potentially resulting in delayed diagnosis. We report the case of a 37-year-old woman with mandibular chondrosarcoma initially presenting with persistent pain in the region of the right mandibular first molar. The lesion was initially managed as a dental condition, and endodontic trea

Multiple Extensive Odontogenic Keratocysts in a Child With Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome: A Case Report.

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) is a rare autosomal dominant multisystem disorder characterized by a broad spectrum of developmental abnormalities and tumor predisposition. Multiple odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are one of its major diagnostic manifestations and may precede the development of other characteristic features. Early recognition of syndromic OKCs is particularly important in children, in whom other clinical manifestations may not yet be apparent. We present the case of a 13-year-old boy referred for evaluation of progressive facial asymmetry caused by extensive maxillary lesions. Maxi

First definitive record of a silesaurid (Avemetatarsalia: Dinosauriformes) from the Upper Triassic of India with new insights on its origin and dispersal.

We report the first record of a silesaurid based on an incomplete skull and articulated mandible recovered from the Upper Triassic Tiki Formation of India. The new taxon, Rewasaurus minori gen et sp. nov., is distinguished from other silesaurids by a unique combination of craniodental features, including five premaxillary teeth, of which three anterior teeth are procumbent and cylindrical, upper dentition proportionally shorter than the lower dentition, and an anterior dentary tip positioned nearly in the same plane with the remainder alveolar margin. Additionally, two isolated partial femora

Three-dimensional morphological analysis of 67 primary mandibular first molars based on CBCT reconstructions.

BACKGROUND: Despite previous anatomical studies on PMFMs, detailed classification and comprehensive measurements remain limited, and the association between crown and root morphology has not been systematically investigated. This study aims to reconstruct three-dimensional anatomical models of PMFMs from intact CBCT images obtained from children in Beijing, China, to characterize variations in crown and root morphology and their relationships, and to conduct detailed quantitative and statistical analyses based on refined classifications. METHODS: Three-dimensional (3D) anatomical models of 67

Simple Bone Cyst: A Report of a Rare Case.

A simple bone cyst is an uncommon non-neoplastic intraosseous pseudocyst in the human jawbone. Because it lacks an epithelial lining, we refer to such a cyst as a pseudocyst. For simple bone cysts, several other names exist, such as traumatic bone cyst, solitary bone cyst, progressive bone cavity, hemorrhagic bone cyst, unicameral bone cyst, and extravasation cyst. Usually, routine radiographic examinations discover these cysts, which otherwise are asymptomatic. Unicameral bone cysts tend to gradually increase in size and enlarge along the long axis of the mandibular alveolar bone, causing no

Knowledge and Prevalence of Bruxism and Its Association With Stress Among Clinical-Year Dental and Medical Students at the University of Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is a repetitive jaw-muscle activity characterised by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible. Current international consensus regards it as a motor behaviour rather than a disorder, and one that may act as a risk factor for tooth wear and temporomandibular disorders; psychosocial stress is among its most consistently reported associated factors. Clinical-year dental and medical students face intense academic and clinical pressure that may predispose them to both stress and bruxism, yet no published Ghanaian data on this relationship

A Case Report on Multiple Impacted Teeth: A Three-Dimensional Radiological Evaluation by Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

Multiple impacted teeth refer to a clinical condition where more than one tooth fails to erupt beyond its chronological age of eruption and remains partially or fully submerged in the jawbone. Multiple impacted teeth commonly arise from conditions such as cleft palate and cleft lip, genetically linked syndromes, and pathological conditions like mucopolysaccharidosis. Impacted teeth, or wisdom teeth, commonly occur in the maxillary or mandibular third molars. Still, other teeth, such as maxillary canine and mandibular premolars, can also be affected. Our case discusses an incidental finding of

Deep learning-driven analysis of osteotomy gap healing following mandibular bilateral sagittal split osteotomy.

Bone healing across the osteotomy gap after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) determines whether osteosynthesis material can be safely removed, but is traditionally assessed by subjective visual inspection of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. This study aimed to develop and validate a deep learning-based model for automated segmentation of BSSO osteotomy gaps on postoperative CBCT scans and to quantify the effect of training dataset size on segmentation performance. Seventy-two osteotomy gaps from 36 patients were manually segmented. Six patients (12 osteotomy sites) were ra

[Autotransplantation of incompletely formed molars in young patients].

Autotransplantation of molars is a valuable treatment option for tooth replacement in adolescents. In a retrospective analysis of 13 young patients, 17 molars were transplanted, with an average follow-up of 16 months. Root formation was 60-90% at the time of transplantation, and the apex was not yet fully formed. Primarily, (3rd) maxillary molars were transplanted into the mandible. All transplanted molars integrated physiologically, without ankylosis or need for endodontic treatment. One case of limited, non-progressive resorption was observed. None of the teeth showed deepened pockets or per

[Anomalous eruption of a mandibular canine].

Impaction of a mandibular canine is rare, and its treatment can be challenging. Unlike with the treatment of an impacted maxillary canine, there are no guidelines for treating an impacted mandibular canine. Treatment options for an impacted mandibular canine include autotransplantation, surgical extraction, monitoring, or exposure and orthodontic treatment. The proposed decision-making model can assist in selecting the optimal treatment.
