Rural-Urban Disparities in Survival Among Patients With Malignant Primary Osseous Neoplasms of the Spine and Sacropelvis: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

Background Malignant primary osseous neoplasms of the spine and sacropelvis are rare tumors whose outcomes rely heavily on specialized, guideline-driven care, which is concentrated in metropolitan referral centers. Investigations of rurality in this population have been limited by single-histology cohorts, small numbers of rural patients, and unadjusted comparisons, and none have weighed geographic disadvantage directly against the socioeconomic conditions with which it coexists. This study aimed to determine whether rural residence is independently associated with overall survival and cause-s

Primary Intraosseous Cavernous Hemangioma of the Petrous Bone Involving the Jugular Fossa Mimicking a Jugular Paraganglioma: A Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation and Review of Relevant Literature.

Primary intraosseous cavernous hemangioma (PICH) is a rare benign vascular tumor that predominantly involves the vertebral column and calvarium, while skull base involvement, particularly the jugular fossa, is exceptionally uncommon. We report a histopathologically confirmed PICH centered in the petrous temporal bone showing jugular fossa and jugular foraminal involvement, radiologically mimicking a jugular paraganglioma. A 46-year-old man presented with progressive unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a heterogeneously enhancing jugular foramen

Opportunistic Diagnosis of Osteoporosis through CT Pulmonary Angiography for Suspected Pulmonary Embolism.

BACKGROUND: CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) ordered to confirm or exclude pulmonary embolism (PE) often reveals incidental findings. Its yield in the opportunistic detection of osteoporosis, a prevalent, under-diagnosed condition, is less clear. AIM: Evaluate osteoporosis and fragility fractures in CTPAs. DESIGN: Retrospective review of consecutive CTPAs, compared to the initial imaging report and previous diagnosis. METHODS: CTPAs review by a consultant radiologist and pertinent clinical data from patients' charts. RESULTS: A total of 517 CTPAs (52.6% women, median 70-years-old) were incl

Evaluation of correlation between hip shoulder width ratio and sensory level of subarachnoid block in adult patients - A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Easily measurable anthropometric parameters may aid in predicting the level of spinal anaesthesia. Some studies have demonstrated a significant correlation between hip-shoulder width ratio (HSR) and level of spinal anaesthesia in lateral position. We hypothesised that even sitting position for subarachnoid injection will result in positive correlation between HSR and sensory level of spinal anaesthesia. So, we aimed to study correlation between HSR and sensory level of subarachnoid block in sitting position after administering 3 ml of 0.5% hyperbaric levobupivacaine. METH

Serotonergic Control of Spine Morphology During Growth in Zebrafish.

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the vertebral column that commonly emerges during growth, yet the biological mechanisms that initiate and drive curve progression remain poorly understood. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) has long been linked to scoliosis through its relationship with pineal melatonin signaling and through genetic associations with human disease, but its role in spinal morphogenesis has remained unclear. Here, using zebrafish, we show that serotonergic signaling is required for normal spine morphology. Transient exposure to 5-HT during development induces la

Dissection and Plastination of the Nervous System of a Dog: A Teaching Tool.

Dissection and plastination of the nervous system have been used to teach anatomy; however, there is no record of a dissection and plastination of a dog's complete nervous system. The objective of this study was to dissect and preserve the whole nervous system of a dog, using the plastination technique, as a tool for teaching veterinary neuroanatomy. A 7-month-old dog was perfused through the common carotid artery with an ethanol-based soft embalming solution, and 10% formalin was injected through the cisterna magna. An incision was made at the level of the dorsal midline, and the muscle tissu

Spinal Segmental Position Relative to the Vertebrae in Korean Water Deer and Siberian Roe Deer.

The length of the spinal cord differs from that of the vertebral column in vertebrates, and their segmental positional relationship exhibits significant variability and complexity. However, research on the spinal cord structure of the Korean water deer and Siberian roe deer remains unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the anatomical structure of spinal cord segments and their association with vertebrae in these species, as well as to compare the findings with those from previously studied species. Morphometric analyses of the spinal cords and vertebrae were conducted using various measu

Near-complete tongue transection during spinal surgery with transcranial MEP monitoring: A case report.

RATIONALE: IONM, especially transcranial MEPs, is a cornerstone in preventing neural injury during spinal surgery. However, transcranial stimulation may result in forceful jaw closure, causing oral trauma such as tongue lacerations, dental injury, or rarely, airway compromise. This case underscores the importance of recognizing and preventing rare but serious complications related to intraoperative neuromonitoring. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 55-year-old female with progressive lower limb weakness and thoracic kyphotic deformity underwent multi-level posterior spinal fusion and vertebral column resec

Rabbits with liver lobe torsion commonly exhibit gastric dilation, a rounded right hepatic silhouette, and peritoneal fluid on radiographs.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and quantify selected radiographic findings of rabbits diagnosed with liver lobe torsion (LLT). METHODS: The study included 50 rabbits with an antemortem diagnosis of LLT with radiographs made within 72 hours of diagnosis via ultrasound. Medical records from 2010 to 2020 from 4 institutions were reviewed. A board-certified radiologist reviewed the radiographs. Radiographic evaluation of gastric size was assessed on the right lateral view (caudal extent of the stomach relative to the lumbar vertebral column, gastric height and width, and vertebral stomach score), as well

Association Between Asymmetrical Muscle Activation and Three-Dimensional Spinal Deformity in Thoracic-Origin Idiopathic Scoliosis Assessed Using Surface Electromyography and EOS Imaging.

Background/Objectives: Although scoliosis is essentially a three-dimensional (3D) deformation of the spine and has been reported to be associated with muscle activations around the vertebrae, no study has demonstrated the 3D structural deformations of the spine in relation to asymmetrical muscle activation nor revealed the neuromuscular characteristics associated with scoliosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between asymmetrical muscle activation and three-dimensional spinal deformity in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) of thoracic origin. Methods: Thirty-on

Dental and skeletal findings of 140 wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in Finland 2010-2015.

BACKGROUND: Dental disease is the most common non-infectious disease of domestic rabbits, with a prevalence reaching up to 40% in studied populations. Diet has been shown to be the main cause. Skeletal disorders, such as vertebral column malformations, are also common, affecting 40% of some pet rabbit breeds. Both can lead to severe health issues and decrease the quality of life. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of dental and skeletal disorders in a Finnish wild rabbit population originating from released domestic rabbits at least four decades ago. As these diseases are related to genetics,

Congenital malformations of the thoracic vertebral column in a mature competition pony.

Thoracolumbar congenital abnormalities are considered rare in mature, performing horses. This case report describes a 14-year-old Welsh pony presented with marked epaxial muscle atrophy, mid-thoracic spinal pain, and stiffness, most pronounced during canter. The thoracic spine exhibited scoliosis, centered at T9-T10, and kyphosis. Radiography and postmortem computed tomography revealed complex congenital malformations of the thoracic vertebral column, including abnormal morphology of the T10-T12 vertebral bodies, partial vertebral fusion, a malformed spinous process, a malformed rib with assoc

Fluoroscopy-guided transurethral resection with antegrade guidewire assistance for retrieval of a buried double-J stent: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Buried or submucosally embedded double-J (DJ) stents present a rare but technically demanding challenge in endourology, particularly in patients with malignant ureteral obstruction and prior instrumentation. We describe the case of a 72-year-old woman with metastatic bladder cancer who presented with urosepsis and right hydronephrosis. During attempted bilateral stent exchange, the left ureteral orifice and distal stent curl were completely obscured by fibrotic tissue. A combined antegrade-retrograde approach was employed: A guidewire was advanced from the nephrostomy under fluoros

Spatiotemporal cellular dynamics of the notochord shape intervertebral disc morphogenesis in the mouse embryo through apoptosis and proliferation.

BACKGROUND: The notochord is a midline structure essential for vertebrate embryogenesis, contributing to the development of the nervous system, digestive tract, and vertebral column. In particular, notochord signaling is indispensable for proper patterning and coordinated development of alternating vertebrae and intervertebral discs (IVDs). Later, notochordal cells (NCs) mature and adopt a characteristic vacuolated morphology before giving rise to the core of the forming IVD, the nucleus pulposus (NP). Postnatally, NCs play a pivotal role in maintaining disc integrity through the secretion of
