Penicillin-Binding Proteins in Streptococcus agalactiae and Their Association with Reduced Penicillin Susceptibility: An Overview.

Streptococcus agalactiae are bacteria that can cause a range of infections, some of them life-threatening. Currently, antimicrobial resistance has become a global problem that puts public health at risk. Despite the widespread use of β-lactams, penicillin remains the first-line antimicrobial for the treatment of invasive S. agalactiae infections. However, reduced susceptibility and resistance to penicillin have been identified in several countries. Penicillin-binding proteins, mainly PBP2X, have been associated with reduced susceptibility to β-lactams in streptococci. The aim of this review is

Characterization of Enterococcus faecium Based on Multi-Omics Approaches: Genomic, Transcriptomic, and Phenotypic Analyses.

Animal-derived E. faecium poses a public health risk due to its capacity to acquire antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and virulence genes. However, the pathogenicity and cross-host transmission potential of strains originating from unique environments, such as the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, remain poorly understood. In this study, a strain of E. faecium was isolated from yak feces. We constructed a phylogenetic tree and identified AMR and virulence genes via whole-genome sequencing. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed to determine its resistance phenotype. An in vivo mouse infection mo

A natural probioenzyme strategy as an effective alternative to antibiotics against multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae in broilers: Benefits for growth, immunity, and organ health.

The rise of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae poses a serious threat to poultry health and food safety, necessitating sustainable alternatives to antibiotics. Our investigation began with an epidemiological survey of broiler samples, which detected K. pneumoniae in 8.88% (8/90) of cases. Among these isolates, over 60% were multidrug-resistant. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed bacterial resistance to penicillin G (100%) but complete sensitivity to colistin sulphate (100%). Molecular analysis further revealed a high prevalence of key resistance genes (tet A [87.5%] and bla TEM

The Atlanta urban watershed harbors antibiotic-resistant halotolerant bacteria.

AIMS: Rapid urbanization of the Chattahoochee River has decreased the water quality with higher levels of anthropogenic bacteria from nonpoint source pollution. Introduced bacteria are variable across urban watersheds but only monitored by the abundance of fecal indicator bacteria. Staphylococcus aureus is a halotolerant, opportunistic pathogen associated with aquatic pollution, but impact on the microbial ecology is not well understood in freshwater systems. Describing the halotolerant subset of the aquatic microbiome, can expand upon the health risk of bacterial pollution. METHODS AND RESUL

Antimicrobial Resistance and Biofilm in Bacteria from Rehabilitated Sapajus libidinosus.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in natural environments and wildlife is an escalating threat to global health and biodiversity conservation. Neotropical primates of the genus Sapajus may act as reservoirs and ecological sentinels of resistant bacteria. The absence of systematic microbiological screening in wildlife rehabilitation centers, coupled with empirical antimicrobial use, can facilitate resistance spread in vulnerable ecosystems. This study characterized phenotypic and genotypic resistance profiles and biofilm-forming ability of Staphylococcus spp. and Mammaliicoccus sciuri isolated fro

Prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in Tanzania: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens global health, and understanding resistance patterns aids in effective treatment and promotes responsible antimicrobial use. Despite the urgency of resistant pathogens, systematic reviews focusing specifically on Tanzania are limited, and while several studies report resistance patterns for individual pathogens, a consolidated analysis of overall prevalence is needed to inform policymaking and public health interventions. Therefore, this review and meta-analysis assessed the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance among clinically relevant pathogens in T
