Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae, KP) is a significant opportunistic pathogen responsible for both nosocomial and community-acquired infections. Bacterial adhesion is the critical initial step for host colonization and the establishment of disease. In this study, we utilized a mariner transposon mutagenesis system to construct a mutant library from the clinical KP strain KP20, identifying a mutant with significantly impaired epithelial cell adhesion due to an insertion in the uspF gene. Genetic knockout experiments confirmed that uspF deletion markedly reduced the adhesion to human airway

Wildlife is a critical reservoir of Campylobacter species, particularly C. jejuni and C. coli, carrying diverse genetic lineages, virulence factors, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. Birds, especially migratory and synanthropic species, are the primary carriers, though mammals, reptiles, and other vertebrates also contribute to maintenance and dissemination. Wildlife-associated strains include both host-specific lineages and generalist clonal complexes (e.g. ST21, ST45, and ST828) capable of crossing wildlife, livestock, humans, and environmental interfaces, reflecting high zoonotic po

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is a vector-borne zoonotic disease caused by spirochete bacteria of the genus Borrelia. It is primarily transmitted by ticks of the genus Ixodes. Vertebrate hosts, including rodents and insectivores such as shrews and moles, maintain the pathogens in ecosystems. Research on the prevalence and geographical distribution of Borrelia species and other micromammal-associated zoonotic pathogens in the Republic of Korea (ROK) is scarce. This study investigated the prevalence and distribution of Borrelia spp. in wild micromammals across the ROK to support Lyme disease control.

BACKGROUND: Acute community-acquired bacterial meningitis remains a significant global health concern with significant mortality and morbidity, including neurological sequelae such as sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Early detection of meningitis-associated SNHL mitigates permanent deafness and poor outcomes, including cognitive decline, social isolation, and mental health disorders. This systematic review evaluates the optimal time point(s) to perform formal audiological diagnostic testing and follow-up in adult and pediatric meningitis patients to effectively detect hearing loss (HL) outco

Feral birds pose a significant concern to many authors, as they can serve as long-distance vectors for various microorganisms that may be transmissible to animals and poultry. This study aimed to identify bacterial infections in feral pigeons (Columba livia var. domestica), their potential role in spreading bacterial pathogens to various Egyptian livestock and the zoonotic significance of this bird species. We conducted the study on 80 healthy feral pigeons, collected from a non-urban area (Ismailia city) in Egypt during the hunting season from October 2022 to July 2023. We kept the birds in t

Anaplasma spp. are tick-borne pathogens of veterinary and public health importance. Although infections in small ruminants have been documented across China, data from the major livestock region of Henan are limited. Here, we conducted the first molecular epidemiological survey of Anaplasma in sheep and goats from Henan province. During 2022-2023, 883 spleen samples were collected from ten prefectures. Screening by nested PCR assay targeting the 16S rRNA gene and subsequent phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA, gltA, and groEL genes revealed an overall prevalence of 12.46% (110/883), with sig

The global spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is primarily driven by horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) via mobile genetic elements. Disinfectants have been reported to accelerate this process, yet most studies focus on plasmid-mediated ARG dissemination, overlooking the role of integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs). Unlike plasmids, ICEs integrate into chromosomes while retaining transfer ability, making them critical for ARG persistence. Here, we established intraspecific and interspecific conjugation models to systematically evaluate the effects

Klebsiella pneumoniae-induced mastitis poses a severe threat to livestock health with limited therapeutic options. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNP) offer promising biocompatibility and antioxidant potential, but their efficacy and mechanism against bacterial mastitis remain unexplored. This study demonstrated that the oral administration of SeNP (20 μg/kg BW) attenuated K. pneumoniae-induced mastitis in goats. The treatment reduced histopathological damage and neutrophil infiltration. Furthermore, it restored anti-inflammatory IL-10 mRNA expression and suppressed proinflammatory IL-1β and IL-6 mR

INTRODUCTION: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a zoonotic disease of global relevance with domestic ruminants as the main reservoirs. Serological diagnosis, especially enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), often suffers from limited sensitivity and specificity due to antigenic variability and cross-reactivity.
SCIENTIFIC GOAL: In this study, a combined proteomic and literature research approach was used to identify immunoreactive proteins and predict linear B-cell epitopes as alternative diagnostic targets.
METHODS: Total protein extracts of a C. burnetii field isolate from shee

Mastitis is a common inflammatory disease in both humans and dairy animals, most frequently driven by bacterial pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Escherichia coli (E. coli), Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis), and Streptococcus uberis (S. uberis). These microbes deploy distinct virulence strategies yet share the ability to reshape T-cell-mediated immunity, thereby influencing infection outcomes, tissue damage, and chronicity. In this review, we summarize current evidence on how CD4⁺, CD8⁺, γδ T-cells, Tregs, and other T-cell subsets participate in mastitis-associated immune respons

INTRODUCTION: Rickettsioses are predominantly zoonotic infections that circulate among animal populations and can be transmitted to humans, representing emerging vector-borne diseases spread through infected arthropod vectors. Rickettsia asembonensis displays a broad geographic distribution and is predominantly associated with fleas. Recent reports have identified R. asembonensis in febrile human patients in Malaysia, Peru, and Zambia, underscoring its emerging zoonotic potential. In Thailand, however, investigations of Rickettsia spp. have concentrated mainly on ticks and fleas, with comparat

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are a major public health concern, yet little is known about their circulation in fish. This study investigated the occurrence, glycopeptide resistance genotypes, virulence characteristics, and sequence types (STs) of VRE isolated from diseased fishes and humans. Isolates were identified using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. VRE isolates were screened for the presence of glycopeptide resistance genes

The transmission of bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic agents from vertebrate animals to humans constitutes a group of diseases called zoonoses. The frequency of these zoonoses is increasing, and new zoonoses are emerging due to travel, factory farming, biodiversity loss, climate change, and deforestation. These diseases have a significant impact on public health, both human and animal, as well as on food, environmental management and the economy. This second article reviews the viral, fungal, and parasitic zoonoses with cutaneous manifestations, known as dermato-zoonoses.

Chaperone/Usher (CU) pathway pili constitute the most diverse class of pili in Gram-negative bacteria. Each pilus filament is assembled from thousands of pilin subunits, and thousands of such filaments can be simultaneously displayed on the bacterial surface, where they mediate essential functions related to environmental adaptation. Owing to their distinctive architectural features, including micrometer-scale length, high copy number, and repetitive subunit organization, CU pili possess intrinsic potential as platforms for bacterial surface display in biotechnology and synthetic biology.
