OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to study myometrial oxytocin and type V1 vasopressin receptors, the in vitro contractile effects of these hormones, and the influence of an oxytocin antagonist.
STUDY DESIGN: Women delivered by cesarean section preterm (n = 51) and at term (n = 71), with and without labor contractions, gave myometrium for the estimation of oxytocin and V1 vasopressin receptors. The in vitro myometrial effects of the peptides and the influence on these of the competitive oxytocin receptor blocking agent 1-deamino-2-D-Tyr(OEt)-4-Thr-8-Orn-oxytocin were also tested.

In an in vitro trial on 80 pregnant and nonpregnant mice, the sensitivity of the uterus myometrium to the vasoconstrictors vasopressin, ornipressin, epinephrine, and norepinephrine was examined in comparison with oxytocin as a standardized stimulative drug. The pregnant uterus showed a significantly increased sensitivity to ornipressin, vasopressin, and norepinephrine. Epinephrine showed no uterus-stimulating effect, and an increase of sensitivity caused by pregnancy was not detected.

A survey of the records of 103 consecutive patients who underwent abdominal myomectomy revealed that menorrhagia and infertility were the commonest presenting complaints. The overall successful pregnancy rate was only 28.2%, but the procedure was corrective in two-thirds of patients with leiomyomata-related infertility. Intra-operative blood loss, post-operative adhesion formation and recurrence of tumour remain major drawbacks of myomectomy.

We have cloned an alternatively spliced glycosaminoglycan attachment domain (GAG-alpha) of human versican from cDNA libraries derived from U251MG glioma cells. We reviewed the literature addressing the use and complications associated with low-viscosity distention fluids in urologic and hysteroscopic procedures. A 56-year-old woman with long-lasting fever of unknown origin was diagnosed as having a giant-cell arteritis of the genital tract with no evidence of temporal arteritis. Diagnosis relied on pathological examination, which showed a segmental panarteritis of ovaries, myometrium, endometrium and uterus cervix.
