Urogenital surgery in foals.

Urogenital surgery in foals represents a nuanced and intricate aspect of equine veterinary medicine. Disorders affecting the urinary system in newborn foals can occur at varying rates, with conditions like uroperitoneum and patent urachus being prevalent. Bladder surgeries are typically conducted through laparotomy, while laparoscopic interventions are less common. Procedures to address umbilical remnants encompass surgeries for persistent urachus or omphalitis. Rarer conditions like ectopic ureters or hydroureters may necessitate sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic measures, including ad

Urachal Villous Adenoma Coexistent With Urachal Carcinoma: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract villous adenomas are uncommon, urachal villous adenomas being especially rare. While their malignant potential remains uncertain, villous adenomas may have malignant components. Here, we present a case of the coexistence of a urachal villous adenoma and urachal carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an 86-year-old woman with a urachal tumor of the bladder wall. A biopsy yielded a diagnosis of villous adenoma. Because of the possibility of coexisting malignancy, we performed a partial cystectomy, including excision of the umbilical ligament. Examination

Mucinous cystadenoma of the urachal: A case report.

This study reports a rare case of a mucinous cystic tumor of the urachus with low malignant potential in a 77 - year - old male, aiming to explore its diagnosis and treatment strategies. The patient had an accidental finding of a 10.7 × 4.8 cm cystic mass in the urachus during an abdominal CT scan for pneumonia. Pathological examination after complete laparoscopic resection showed cystic tumor cells with mucus accumulation. Immunohistochemistry indicated positive Ki67 (+60 %) and MUC2. Conclusion: The diagnosis of this tumor depends on pathological examination. Surgical treatment requires comp

A Case Report of Patent Urachus With Perinatal Cardiac Abnormality.

Patent urachus is a rare urachal anomaly. This case involves a newborn female with a cyst near the umbilicus and a small patent ductus arteriosus with left-to-right shunting. A low-dose fluoroscopic cystogram revealed contrast entering a tubular structure extending from the bladder to the umbilicus, with evidence of leakage at the umbilical site, confirming a patent urachus. Surgical treatment was performed through an infraumbilical incision to remove the persistent urachus up to the bladder. The patient recovered well postoperatively and was discharged in stable condition to her parents' care

MiR-155 and MiR-1275 relation with graft-versus-host disease and hepatitis B in hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients.

Mepolizumab is an anti-interleukin-5 monoclonal antibody that is in clinical trials with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for the treatment of severe asthma, nasal polyposis and hypereosinophilic syndrome and eosinophilic oesophagitis (the latter two indications are classed as eosinophilia in the phase table). Interleukin-5 stimulates the production, activation and maturation of eosinophils. Since mepolizumab inhibits interleukin-5 and has a long terminal half-life, treatment with mepolizumab causes a sustained reduction in the numbers of circulating eosinophils. Thus, mepolizumab may be a useful therape

Presentation and survival for urachal cancer: Findings from a nationwide multicenter cohort study in Norway.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This study aims to map the prevalence and treatment of urachal cancer (UrC) in Norway, establish survival rates, identify prognostic factors, and evaluate whether any of the three commonly used staging systems for UrC provide superior prognostic value. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, data from the National Cancer Register was collected to identify patients diagnosed with UrC between1997 and2022. Eligible cases (n = 43) underwent retrospective review of their individual hospital records. All patients were staged using the Sheldon, Mayo, and Limonnik-revis

Rare and Incidental Finding of an Uninfected Urachal Cyst in an Adult Female.

Urachal cysts are rare congenital anomalies, often asymptomatic and incidentally diagnosed, caused by abnormal persistence or incomplete obliteration of the urachus. We report a 38-year-old female with lower abdominal pain and UTI symptoms, incidentally found to have a non-infected urachal cyst on CT imaging. Managed conservatively with antibiotics, the case underscores the importance of individualized treatment and vigilant follow-up to monitor potential complications.

Histopathological characterisation of omphalitis in piglets.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic treatment of piglets after birth is commonly carried out due to concern for development of omphalitis leading to umbilical outpouchings and/or systemic infections. Among others, the portal of entry for bacterial infections includes the umbilical cord at birth. The aim was to characterise the histological and bacteriological pattern of manifestations in the umbilicus of piglets with omphalitis that died during the suckling period in a Danish herd. RESULTS: A total of 37 piglets found dead or euthanised due to sickness before weaning were included. Histopathological ompha

Rare complications of Crohn's disease - a series of three cases.

Crohn's disease (CD) is an increasingly common disease in clinical practice. The progress of medicine, which has resulted in an extension of the survival time of patients, the introduction of new treatment methods, and the nature of the disease itself means that we are seeing more and more new, unusual complications of this disease. We have reviewed three cases of rare complications of CD, with a focus on possible atypical complications that may be seen on imaging studies. Complications of CD and its treatment can occur in various organs and systems, and manifest in very non-specific ways. If

Urachus Remnant: Importance of Early Diagnosis in Preventing Complications.

The urachus remnant is a vestigial structure that results from incomplete involution of the cloaca and allantois, forming a duct between the bladder and the umbilical scar. Normally, it obliterates to form the middle umbilical ligament. Despite its rarity and often nonspecific symptoms, it can be incidentally discovered during imaging tests or due to complications, such as infections or neoplasms. The first diagnostic test usually ordered is an ultrasound, followed by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging for a more detailed evaluation. Early diagnosis and appropriate management, w

Suprapubic Open and Single-Port Laparoscopic Surgery for Urachal Remnant in Children: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: A narrow operative field, difficult dissection of an inflamed urachal remnant (UR) and possible incomplete resection of UR at the bladder dome may be serious problems in laparoscopic surgery with umbilical and extraperitoneal approaches. To overcome these problems, we recently introduced suprapubic open and single-port laparoscopic surgery (SOSLS) for UR in children. MATERIALS AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: The root of UR was resected and the bladder wall was closed under direct vision through a 3 cm suprapubic transverse incision. A multichannel port with three trocars was applied to

Urachal Mucinous Cystic Tumour of Low Malignant Potential: A Case Report With Literature Review.

Urachal mucinous cystic tumours of low malignant potential (MCTLPs) are exceedingly rare epithelial tumours. MCTLPs arise from the remnants of the urachus and are characterised by the presence of intestinal-type mucinous epithelium with low-grade cytologic atypia without stromal invasion, which differentiates them from mucinous adenocarcinomas. These tumours are often asymptomatic and found incidentally on imaging done for other reasons; symptoms, however, may include mild abdominal pain/discomfort, storage lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) or mucusuria. The treatment is surgical excision, w

Case report: Fistula formation of a urachal cyst 6 years after prostatectomy.

Urachal cysts can be a diagnostic dilemma, because determining whether the cyst is malignant can be difficult. As a result, the best treatment is not always obvious. Urachal malignancies account for less than 1 % of total bladder cancer cases thus in most cases urachal cysts are benign, and a watchful waiting approach is justified. However, in cases with symptoms or a suspicion of malignancy, there is an indication for surgical resection. Here, we discuss the management of a symptomatic large persistent urachal cyst in a patient that had undergone a radical prostatectomy which was complicated

Epidemiology and treatment patterns of urachal remnants in adult patients with omphalitis: a nationwide claims-based study in Japan.

PURPOSE: Urachal remnants are common in neonates and can persist into adulthood. However, their epidemiology in adults remains poorly characterized. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical features of urachal remnants in adult Japanese patients with omphalitis using a nationwide claims database. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Japan Medical Data Center Claims Database (2005-2023) to identify patients  ≥ 15 years of age who were diagnosed with omphalitis. The prevalence of urachal remnants, associated diagnoses, surgical interventions, and time to surgery was examined, focusing

Signet-Ring Cell Type Adenocarcinoma of the Urachus: A Rare Case.

Urachal adenocarcinoma is a rare subset of bladder cancer originating from the urachus. We present a case of a 62-year-old woman with a 2-year history of persistent dysuria, urinary frequency, and urgency. On physical examination, a firm, non-tender suprapubic mass was detected. Cystoscopy was performed and a bladder mass was detected. After obtaining the biopsy, pathology confirmed a mucinous signet-ring cell type adenocarcinoma of urachal origin with negative margins and no vascular or perineural invasion. Following negative tumor markers, colonoscopy and CT scans for metastasis, the patient

A Rare Cause of Umbilical Discharge in a Healthy Adult: A Case Report of Patent Urachal Sinus in Primary Care.

Umbilical discharge in adults is a rare presentation in primary care and is frequently misdiagnosed as superficial infections, umbilical dermatitis, or abscesses, particularly in individuals with known predisposing factors such as obesity, poor hygiene, or diabetes mellitus. However, in the absence of these risk factors, the possibility of underlying congenital anomalies such as a patent urachus should be considered, as prompt recognition and diagnosis are paramount to prevent complications such as recurrent infections, abscess formation, and even malignant transformation. We report the case o

Dramatic regression of an inflammatory urachal pseudotumor mimicking adenocarcinoma under conservative medical therapy.

Inflammatory pseudotumors (IPTs) are rare benign lesions that often mimic malignancy, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, especially in uncommon sites such as the urachus. We report a 66-year-old woman with a firm peri-umbilical mass initially suggestive of invasive urachal adenocarcinoma. Despite aggressive imaging features, biopsy revealed fibro-inflammatory tissue without neoplasia. The lesion regressed almost completely under antibiotics and anti-inflammatory therapy, with sustained remission. This case illustrates that IPTs, even when radiologically aggressive, may respond to co
