Neural Organization of Episodic Memory and Navigation in Children and Adults.

Episodic memory and spatial navigation are often viewed as interlinked, in part due to their shared reliance on medial-temporal lobe (MTL) structures. At the same time, there are important differences, for example, natural spatial navigation requires moving one's body through space while episodic memory does not. We investigated whether naturalistically encoded memories that were either episodic or additionally embedded in a navigational experience relied on overlapping or distinct neural networks. Children ages 8-13 years old and young adults viewed pictures of objects that they had previousl

Role of Chromatin-Associated RNAs in Eye Physiology and Pathology.

Noncoding RNAs, including long noncoding RNAs, enhancer RNAs, circular RNAs, and small nuclear and nucleolar RNAs, represent a major, yet still largely uncharacterized, regulatory layer in the eye. A subset of these molecules, chromatin-associated RNAs (caRNAs), physically interacts with DNA and nuclear protein complexes to influence genome organization, transcriptional output, and stress responses. Although caRNAs have emerged as essential regulators of chromatin topology and gene expression in diverse tissues, their identity, dynamics, and mechanisms in the retina and retinal pigment epithel

AA in Brain-Memory, Dementia, Depression, Anxiety, Alzheimer's Disease, Affective and Psychiatric Disorders, and Coronary Heart Disease (CHD).

The human brain is rich in AA and DHA, which are crucial for normal brain growth and development and memory. They form a major structural component of neurons of the cerebral cortex and photoreceptor cells in the retina. AA and DHA support synaptic plasticity and contribute to efficient neurotransmission. Adequate amounts of AA and DHA support neuronal growth and the formation of new synapses and thus are crucial for memory and cognitive function.Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and other neurological diseases occur more frequently in those with coronary heart disease (CHD) and vice versa.

Preparation of Postmortem Human Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Frontal Cortex Tissue for Profiling Pyramidal Neurons Via Digital Spatial Profiling.

Digital spatial profiling (DSP) facilitates RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) of small populations of cells, specifically ~20 pyramidal neurons in postmortem formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) human brain tissue. This approach enables precise expression profiling via RNA-seq data linked to spatially characterized samples utilizing tissue-bound probes. We present a comprehensive protocol for manual slide preparation using the GeoMx DSP system as preliminary steps to spatial characterization of lamina-specific pyramidal neurons in human postmortem Brodmann area 9 (BA9) frontal cortex brain tissue.

Context-Dependent Functional Diversity of Dorsomedial Posterior Parietal Neurons Revealed by Single-Unit FMRI Mapping during Naturalistic Viewing.

The dorsomedial posterior parietal cortex (dmPPC) plays an important role in episodic processing by integrating sensory, cognitive, and motor information across distributed brain systems. However, how individual dmPPC neurons participate in large-scale functional organization during naturalistic experience remains poorly understood. To address this question, we combined single-unit electrophysiology and awake fMRI in five rhesus macaques of both sexes viewing identical naturalistic video stimuli. Using single-unit fMRI mapping, we generated whole-brain neuron-BOLD functional maps by correlatin

The role of inferior parietal lobule in emotion dysregulation in bipolar disorder.

Emotion dysregulation is a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD), with detrimental impacts on symptoms and functioning. The inferior parietal lobule (IPL) is a region consistently implicated in neurocircuit models of emotion regulation, yet the specific role of the IPL in emotion regulation generally, and emotion regulation in BD specifically, has been largely unexamined and unexplained. In this review, we attempt to better elucidate the role of the IPL in emotion regulation by examining normative evidence from healthy samples for IPL function in emotion regulation. We examine the specific rol

Beyond executive dysfunction: The precuneus as an introspective monitoring hub for driving safety.

Unsafe driving is a public health concern, yet its neural basis in the general population remains poorly understood. Research on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traditionally attributes crash risk to executive dysfunction and fronto-striatal abnormalities, but these models do not explain unsafe driving among healthy individuals. Here, we synthesize structural and functional neuroimaging evidence to propose a precuneus-centered framework of driving safety. Reduced precuneus gray matter volume is associated with ADHD trait dimensions and crash history in healthy adults, while fun

Mathematics Anxiety Is Associated With Attentional and Memory-Related Neural Activity During Numerical Cognition.

Mathematics achievement can be influenced by negative emotions and expectations related to numerical tasks. Individuals with high mathematics anxiety often show poorer numerical performance. This study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying different levels of numerical processing associated with mathematics anxiety using number line estimation and arithmetic verification tasks during fMRI. Participants were classified into high (n = 22, age = 23.09 ± 2.22) and low (n = 24, age = 22.67 ± 3.29) mathematics anxiety groups based on detailed screening prior to scanning. Superior frontal and hippocampal structures associated with onset versus recurrence of mood disorders in monozygotic twins.

Mood disorders involve complex neurobiological trajectories, making it difficult to identify predictors of their onset and progression. This prospective study disentangled markers of vulnerability from markers of illness recurrence by leveraging monozygotic twins discordant for mood disorders. We followed 136 monozygotic twins (66 affected [AT], 39 high-risk, and 31 low-risk unaffected twins [UT]; mean age 37.4 ± 9.1 years; 69.9% females) for 7.1 ± 0.8 years after baseline MRI. Cox regression examined associations between regional neuroanatomy (bilateral hippocampus, precuneus, anterior cingul

Diagnostic and sex effects on frontostriatal brain wiring structural organization in early psychosis affective subjects compared to healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Brain connectivity abnormalities may underlie affective psychosis which may be influenced by sex. Using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) tractography, we assessed frontostriatal brain wiring connectivity patterns in 46 early psychosis affective and 56 healthy control young adult, male and female participants. METHODS: We collected harmonized whole brain tractography dMRI data from three sites and applied our novel fiber clustering methodology to identify 17 white matter fiber clusters connecting the frontal cortex and caudate per hemisphere in each group. By comparing c

The Paradoxical Effect of Levetiracetam: A Case of Nonconvulsive Status Epilepticus Following Stereoelectroencephalography Implantation.

The paradoxical effect of levetiracetam (LEV) refers to the paradoxical aggravation of epileptic seizures during clinical application. In this case, we report for the first time a patient with MRI-negative drug-resistant frontal lobe epilepsy who developed nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) following LEV dose escalation, as documented by stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG). The SEEG findings suggested that paradoxical activation of mesial temporal structures may be involved in the occurrence of LEV-induced paradoxical effects.

Mapping the topographic organization of the human zona incerta using diffusion MRI.

The zona incerta (ZI) is a deep brain region originally described by Auguste Forel as an 'immensely confusing area about which nothing can be said'. Despite the elusive nature of this structure, mounting evidence supports the role of the ZI and surrounding regions across a diverse range of brain functions and as a candidate target for neuromodulatory therapies. Using in vivo diffusion magnetic resonance imaging and data-driven connectivity, we identify a topographic organization between the ZI and neocortex. Specifically, our methods identify a rostral-caudal gradient predominantly connecting

Antiferromagnetic semiconductor NdAsTe: A new member of LnAsTe (Ln = Lanthanoids) compounds.

Rare-earth-based intermetallic compounds are at the forefront of materials science, providing valuable insights into the interplay among magnetism, topology, and structural correlations. The interesting properties of these materials, driven by localized 4f -electrons, strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and crystal electric field (CEF) effect, make them a focal point in solid-state physics for designing advanced functional materials. We have synthesized NdAsTe using the solid-state reaction route and explored the temperature and field-dependent magnetic properties, which demonstrate long-range a

Confinement enhanced phosphorescent electrochemiluminescence of copper iodide cluster complex for imaging detection of organophosphorus pesticide.

Owing to the spin statistics of electrogenerated excitons, conventional fluorescent ECL materials fail to utilize 75% of the triplet excitons. To improve the utilization efficiency of triplet excitons, this work proposed a strategy for the design of phosphorescent ECL material based on the synergistic effect of heavy-atom iodine enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and rigid molecular environment. A copper-iodide cluster complex Cu4I6(pr-ted)2 was successfully synthesized using 1-propyl-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octanium (pr-ted) as the organic cation and polyvinylpyrrolidone for chain entanglement

Oxygen-responsive high-efficiency orange-red room-temperature phosphorescence from chalcogen-containing dibenzo[a,c]phenazine foldamers.

Efficient orange-red/red room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in purely organic materials is highly desirable for bio-imaging and information security but remains scarce due to the energy gap law and the challenge in achieving strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in red-emitting systems. Herein, a functional unit combination strategy was employed to develop a series of orange-red-emitting RTP materials. By modifying a dibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DBP) emissive core with flexible chalcogen-containing foldamers (phenylselenyl, phenylthio, or phenoxyl), three new compounds (O-DBP, S-DBP, and Se-DBP) were

Bonding topology and electronic characterization of mechanochemically synthesized CsCuBr3 as a lead-free p-type semiconductor.

In this work, we present a systematic study of the copper halide compound CsCuBr3, combining mechanochemical synthesis with structural, spectroscopic, electrochemical, and first-principles investigations. Phase-pure orthorhombic CsCuBr3 (space group C2221) was obtained after 3 h of planetary ball milling under atmospheric conditions. Structural and microstructural evolution were carefully monitored via Rietveld refinement and Williamson-Hall analysis, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the expected composition and the Cu2+ oxidation state. Quantifying U-H covalency in a series of uranyl borohydrides using 1H NMR spectroscopy.

The reaction of [UO2(OTf)2(Cy3PO)2] (1) with 2.4 equiv. of NaBH4 in THF affords [UO2(κ2-BH4)2(Cy3PO)2] (2) as yellow blocks in moderate isolated yield. Flexible ultrafast spintronic terahertz emitter with exceptional working temperature range.

Spintronic terahertz (THz) emitters (TEs) leverage the spin degree of freedom. To address the growing demand for flexible TEs, we demonstrate a soft spintronic ultrafast TE based on a NiFe/SrRuO3/SrTiO3/mica(substrate) heterostructure. It emits picosecond 0-4 THz waves under near-infrared laser excitation, driven by the inverse spin Hall effect. Bendable samples with largely tunable curvatures (-2 cm-1≤ κ ≤ 2 cm-1) are achieved, by which a maximum 82% enhancement in the THz field strength is observed. We attribute it to tensile strain-induced large spin-orbit torque in SrRuO3. Significantly, w

Crystallization for Manufacturing in Microgravity; Are We There Yet?

Crystallization in microgravity has been extensively investigated because of its potential to enhance crystal quality compared to terrestrial conditions. While early efforts were primarily directed toward single-crystal growth for structural studies, increasing attention is now being given to its relevance for manufacturing in low-Earth orbit (LEO) and future in-space manufacturing (ISM). This review provides a structured and systematic analysis of the literature on microgravity crystallization by examining the materials studied, distinguishing between single-crystal and bulk crystal regimes,
