Three-dimensional semi-autotamatic segmentation of nasolacrimal duct morphometry on computed tomography images.

PURPOSE: Given the potential role of nasolacrimal duct (NLD) morphometry in the aetiology of primary acquired obstructions, it is imperative that clinicians have access to detailed anatomical information. The aim of this study was to determine normative data on nasolacrimal duct morphometry in the Turkish population sample and to provide guidelines for clinicians. METHODS: The study included retrospectively computed tomography images of a healthy Turkish population sample of 151 individuals, 79 of whom were female and 72 of whom were male. Images were modeled and analyzed using 3D Slicer vers

Exploring the lacrimal sac fossa: anatomical insights for optimizing external dacryocystorhinostomy.

BACKGROUND: External dacryocystorhinostomy is considered the gold standard for treating epiphora resulting from nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Despite the success of the procedure, a visible facial skin scar often undermines the surgical outcome. The aim of this study is to prevent visible facial scarring following oculoplastic interventions by improving the insight into the anatomical details of the lacrimal sac fossa (LSF), lacrimo-maxillary suture (LMS), periosteum, and lacrimal diaphragm. METHODS: The study examined the medial canthal region of eighty adult male sspecimens to investigate

Down syndrome is a risk factor for developing corneal ulcers following nasolacrimal duct stenting.

Nasolacrimal duct stents are often used to treat congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO). Rarely, corneal ulcers may develop following stent placement. Of the 349 monocanalicular stents placed in 253 patients with congenital NLDO over a period of 33 months at our institution, 4 stents (1.1%) resulted in corneal ulcers. Three occurred in children with Down syndrome (n = 35); 1 occurred in a child retroactively diagnosed with neurotrophic keratitis. The 3 cases indicate a statistically significant increased relative risk of corneal ulcer formation in children with Down syndrome compared

3D computed tomography-dacryocystography (3D CT-DCG) and the contrast agents: direct comparison of Lipiodol and barium sulfate.

To compare the performance of two contrast agents, barium sulfate and lipiodol, in the performance of 3D CT-DCG. A prospective interventional radiological study was performed on 15 lacrimal drainage systems of 14 patients who clinically presented with nasolacrimal duct obstructions. All patients underwent CT-DCG, traditionally first using lipiodol and a week later by barium sulfate. CT-DCG data was used to construct 3D models as per standard published protocols. A 3D software was used to calculate the volume (which reflects the filling ability of the dye) and the number of details (counted by

"SYRI" - A hands-on teaching model for SYRInging of nasolacrimal duct.

BACKGROUND: Nasolacrimal duct (NLD) screening is a standard before cataract surgery. Lacrimal sac pressure and syringing rules out NLD obstructions.[1] However, lacrimal syringing is invasive and risks iatrogenic injury to the lacrimal drainage system (LDS).[2]. PURPOSE: Practice model for lacrimal syringing and understanding outflow obstructions. SYNOPSIS: The model included an inner functional part and an outer mechanical part. Two circular apertures were first made in the ink dropper (lacrimal sac) and two hollow silicone tubing of 10 mm length were glued to the apertures (upper and lower

[Outcome of Congenital Obstruction of the Nasolacrimal Duct].

BACKGROUND: Congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, a common condition in newborns, is characterised by narrowing of the tear drainage system, often at the nasolacrimal duct. In most cases, the tear duct opens spontaneously within the first year of life, assisted by massage. In cases where there is no improvement, surgical probing may be required. This study aimed to analyse the presentation and outcomes of surgically treated tear duct obstructions in children at our clinic. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using electronic medical records of patients under 18 ye

Advances in the Understanding of ocular and nasal lymphatics.

Recent research advancements have enhanced our understanding of the lymphatic system in the eye and nasal region and its involvement in health and disease. The eye is an anatomical extension of the central nervous system and was previously believed to be devoid of lymphatic structures, except for the conjunctiva. However, Lymphatic vessels have been recently identified in the cornea (under pathological conditions), limbus, ciliary body, extraocular muscles, conjunctiva, lacrimal gland, optic nerve sheath, and lymphoid structures in the choroid and Schlemm's duct. These novel findings have sign

Altered morphology of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues and epithelium in the nasal cavity and lacrimal apparatus in autoimmune disease-prone MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr mice.

The mucosal epithelium and the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues (MALTs) protect the mucosa, such as eye and nose, from constant exposure to foreign antigens. As autoimmune disorders can target both epithelium and MALTs, we morphologically investigated the head of MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr, an autoimmune disease-prone mouse, to discuss the pathological crosstalk among autoimmune disorders, mucosal epithelium, and MALTs. Compared to healthy control MRL/MpJ mice, MRL/MpJ-Faslpr/lpr mice had more lymphoid tissues that were diffusely localized beneath the mucosa epithelium in their lacrimal tracts and n

Basal Cell Carcinoma in Lacrimal Sac: An Exceptional Histopathological Finding.

The authors report a case of a 49-year-old patient who presented with affection in the lacrimal sac. He had undergone multiple dacryocystorhinostomy surgeries, yet his symptoms failed to improve. However, histopathological examination revealed an unusual diagnosis: basal cell carcinoma. This is a completely atypical discovery and is rarely described in the literature in the lacrimal sac. The fact that this unusual location together with its difficult diagnosis given the similarity to the symptoms of a lacrimal duct obstruction makes this a particularly noteworthy case.
