Context-Dependent Functional Diversity of Dorsomedial Posterior Parietal Neurons Revealed by Single-Unit FMRI Mapping during Naturalistic Viewing.

The dorsomedial posterior parietal cortex (dmPPC) plays an important role in episodic processing by integrating sensory, cognitive, and motor information across distributed brain systems. However, how individual dmPPC neurons participate in large-scale functional organization during naturalistic experience remains poorly understood. To address this question, we combined single-unit electrophysiology and awake fMRI in five rhesus macaques of both sexes viewing identical naturalistic video stimuli. Using single-unit fMRI mapping, we generated whole-brain neuron-BOLD functional maps by correlatin

The role of inferior parietal lobule in emotion dysregulation in bipolar disorder.

Emotion dysregulation is a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD), with detrimental impacts on symptoms and functioning. The inferior parietal lobule (IPL) is a region consistently implicated in neurocircuit models of emotion regulation, yet the specific role of the IPL in emotion regulation generally, and emotion regulation in BD specifically, has been largely unexamined and unexplained. In this review, we attempt to better elucidate the role of the IPL in emotion regulation by examining normative evidence from healthy samples for IPL function in emotion regulation. We examine the specific rol

Beyond executive dysfunction: The precuneus as an introspective monitoring hub for driving safety.

Unsafe driving is a public health concern, yet its neural basis in the general population remains poorly understood. Research on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traditionally attributes crash risk to executive dysfunction and fronto-striatal abnormalities, but these models do not explain unsafe driving among healthy individuals. Here, we synthesize structural and functional neuroimaging evidence to propose a precuneus-centered framework of driving safety. Reduced precuneus gray matter volume is associated with ADHD trait dimensions and crash history in healthy adults, while fun

Mathematics Anxiety Is Associated With Attentional and Memory-Related Neural Activity During Numerical Cognition.

Mathematics achievement can be influenced by negative emotions and expectations related to numerical tasks. Individuals with high mathematics anxiety often show poorer numerical performance. This study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying different levels of numerical processing associated with mathematics anxiety using number line estimation and arithmetic verification tasks during fMRI. Participants were classified into high (n = 22, age = 23.09 ± 2.22) and low (n = 24, age = 22.67 ± 3.29) mathematics anxiety groups based on detailed screening prior to scanning. Trait and test anxie

Conflict-Dependent Gain Control in Area VIP during Visual-Vestibular Self-Motion Processing.

Visual and vestibular signals are continuously integrated to estimate self-motion, yet these sensory cues are often inconsistent under natural conditions. How cortical circuits regulate multisensory interactions under cue conflict while preserving stable heading representations remains poorly understood. Here, we recorded neurons in male macaque ventral intraparietal area (VIP) during passive movement stimulation while systematically varying visual-vestibular heading offsets. VIP neurons exhibited strong conflict-sensitive gain modulation: congruent cues enhanced neuronal responses, whereas in

Preoperative neuropsychological profiles in adult parietal glial and glioneuronal tumors: A retrospective descriptive study.

The parietal lobe is a highly interconnected cortical hub involved in language, sensory integration, visuospatial processing, and cognition. Although neurological and cognitive consequences of parietal tumors have previously been described, detailed preoperative neuropsychological profiles obtained using comprehensive assessment batteries remain incompletely documented. This study aimed to describe preoperative neuropsychological impairments in adults with parietal glial and glioneuronal tumors and to explore descriptive patterns according to hemispheric laterality and parietal subregion. Naturalistic spatial education engages distinct neural processes for mental rotation, cognitive load, and linguistic demands.

Neuroscience studies typically isolate spatial cognition using simplified tasks targeting a single cognitive process. However, during formal spatial education, the brain rarely performs one cognitive operation at a time. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess neural systems involved in dynamically processing an educational spatial visualization lesson. We quantified lesson content using an instructional-design framework capturing variation in spatial complexity, cognitive load, and verbal density. We then characterized how instructional demands modulated brain fun

Decoding Graded Grip-Force Intensity From fMRI Data Reveals a Transformation From Abstract to Effector- and Movement-Specific Codes Prior to Execution.

Motor planning entails a progressive transformation of neural representations - from abstract motor goals, which represent intended action-outcomes independent of any particular effector (i.e., the body part executing the action), to effector-specific movement plans. Functional MRI (fMRI) studies have shown that parametric variations in parietal activity patterns reflect the encoding of intended force-intensities in effector-specific regions, even before detailed movement parameters are specified. However, how these intended force-intensities are initially represented in an abstract, effector-

EXPRESS: Synaptic density PET mediates the relationship between Alzheimer's disease pathology and cognitive performance.

INTRODUCTION: Synaptic loss is one of the strongest post-mortem predictors of Alzheimer's disease (AD) severity and may impact how pathology affects cognition. This study compared regional [11C]UCB-J synaptic density across the AD continuum and evaluated the extent to which synaptic density mediates relationships between AD biomarkers. METHODS: Seventy-two participants completed PET scans, MRIs, and cognitive testing. Participants were categorized into subgroups representing typical AD progression. Regional synaptic density was compared across subgroups and pathological variables. Standard me

Neural dysfunction underlying divergent thinking and its shared mechanisms with protracted withdrawal symptoms in heroin use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Drug use may induce transient bursts of inspiration but is also associated with increasing cognitive rigidity. How neurological damage induced by drug addiction affects higher-order thinking processes in humans remains elusive. This gap limits our understanding of broader cognitive impairment in addiction and prolonged maladaptation during withdrawal. METHODS: The study investigated divergent thinking, a key component of flexible behavior, in heroin use disorder (HUD). Behavioral performance was assessed using the Realistic Presented Problem-Solving Task. Task-related neural signa

Facial emotion recognition of sadness relates to superior parietal gray matter volume in mild cognitive impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is associated with early, regionally selective neurodegenerative changes that may affect socioemotional functioning before atrophy becomes widespread. This study examined whether structural brain alterations in MCI relate to facial emotion recognition performance. Sixty adults (30 MCI, 30 healthy controls), aged 50-86 years, completed neuropsychological testing, the Facial emotion composite Task, and structural MRI. Whole-brain voxel-based morphometry revealed no significant gray matter volume differences between groups. However, targeted region-of-interest ROI

Intracerebral Hemorrhage as the Initial Manifestation of Brain Metastasis from Left Atrial Intimal Sarcoma in a Young Adult: A Case Report.

Intratumoral hemorrhage caused by metastatic brain tumors originating from intimal sarcoma is extremely rare. We report a diagnostically challenging case of cerebral metastasis from a left atrial intimal sarcoma that initially presented as subcortical hemorrhage in a young adult. A 24-year-old woman presented with right homonymous hemianopia and was diagnosed with a subcortical hemorrhage in the left parietal lobe. No obvious source of bleeding was identified, and the patient was managed conservatively and discharged. One month later, fever, dyspnea, and palpitations developed in the patient.

Voxel-Based Mapping of Seizure Risk in Meningioma Identifies the Frontoparietal Interface and Tumor Microenvironment as Key Predictors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Brain invasion (BINV) and peritumoral edema (PTBE) have repeatedly been implicated as major contributors to meningioma-related seizures (MRS). By contrast, the influence of the precise tumor location on seizure risk is still insufficiently characterized. In this study, we systematically investigated clinical and imaging-derived predictors of MRS, integrating them with spatial analyses using voxel-based lesion symptom mapping (VLSM). METHODS: We reviewed clinical variables-including seizure history, histopathological subtype, World Health Organization (WHO) grade, BI

Associations Between Resting-State EEG Delta-band Activity at Selected Parietal Electrodes and Cognitive Changes Following Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation in Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment: An Exploratory Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Transcutaneous auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (taVNS) may improve cognition in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), but its electrophysiological correlates remain unclear. We explored whether parietal delta-band changes were associated with cognitive changes following taVNS. METHODS: This exploratory secondary analysis included 26 participants with MCI from a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial (taVNS, n = 14; sham, n = 12) who had valid resting-state EEG data at baseline and Week 24. Absolute and relative 1-3 Hz delta power at Pz, P1, P2, and P5 were analyzed using r

Visual Perspective Shapes Subjective Experience: Dissociable Parietal Contributions to the Constructive Nature of Memory.

Subjective features of memory are often treated as secondary to the objective content of remembered events. However, growing evidence suggests that these features actively shape how memories are constructed, experienced, and used. Rather than treating visual perspective as a peripheral correlate of subjectivity, this review positions it as a key mechanism that shapes the memory. Because perspective can be flexibly controlled and reliably measured, it offers a unique window into how retrieval goals interact with mental simulation to produce vivid and emotionally resonant recollections. Precuneus and Superior Parietal Lobule: Morphology and Evolution in the Human Genus.

BACKGROUND: Humans display larger and more complex parietal lobes, when compared with other primates. The superior parietal lobule is a region still poorly known in terms of comparative and evolutionary neuroanatomy, although at least its medial region, the precuneus, is apparently expanded in our species. SUMMARY: In this article, I review 20 years of personal research on the morphology and evolution of this cortical element. The precuneus is particularly variable among adult humans, mostly in its dorsal and anterior areas. This large individual variability seems already settled at birth. Du

Control of representation updating by higher-order thalamus enables history-based decision-making.

When sensory information is ambiguous, we must interpret current inputs based on a representation constructed from our previous experiences. Although appropriately updating this internal representation to track environmental changes is essential for behavior, the neural basis of this dynamic integration remains unknown. Using a combination of multi-area single-unit recordings and optogenetic techniques in mice under both behavioral and passive conditions, we find that interactions between the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and its higher-order thalamic counterpart, the pulvinar (PUL), are nec

The role of the angular gyrus in memory for encoded perspective and subjective re-experiencing.

Remembering personal events typically involves reconstructing our original first-person perspective, often accompanied by a vivid sense of re-experiencing the past. The Angular Gyrus (AnG) has been implicated in both perspective reconstruction and subjective memory experience, yet its specific contribution remains unclear. We investigated the role of the AnG across three studies using a behavioural paradigm in which healthy adults (aged 18-35) encoded a naturalistic video. At retrieval, participants judged whether test images matched their original perspective and rated subjective aspects of t

Affective and neural modulation of smart device-related stimuli following a single session of evaluative conditioning.

BACKGROUND: Evaluative conditioning (EC) has shown potential to reduce maladaptive affective biases underlying problematic health-related behaviors. However, there is limited evidence applying EC to smart device-related stimuli. We examined whether EC training can modify affective and neural responses to these stimuli in a proof-of-concept study conducted in a non-clinical sample. METHODS: Healthy young participants underwent a single session of either negative or benign EC, during which smart device images served as conditioned stimuli (CSs) and were paired with negative or positive words as
