Cerebral differences between roller and speed skaters: preliminary evidence for roller-to-ice talent transfer.

OBJECTIVES: Talent transfer (TT) from roller skating to speed skating is a recognized pathway for developing elite athletes. This study aimed to identify the sport-specific cerebral characteristics in these athletes by comparing their brain structure and function, thereby providing preliminary neuroimaging evidence relevant to "roller-to-ice" TT. METHODS: We acquired structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from 10 national-level speed skaters and 14 roller skaters. Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to assess whole-brain gray matter volume (GMV), and

Concurrent category-selective neural activity across the ventral occipito-temporal cortex supports a non-hierarchical view of human visual recognition.

Visual recognition is a fundamental human brain function, supported by a network of regions in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC). This network is thought to be organized hierarchically, with definite processing stages increasing in invariance and time-course from posterior to anterior cortical regions. Here, we provide a stringent test of this view by measuring category-selective neural activity to natural images of faces across the VOTC with electrophysiological intracerebral recordings in a large human sample (N=140; >11,000 recording sites). Face-selective high frequency broadband

Occipital lobe glial and glioneuronal tumors: A systematic review of clinical presentation, surgical management, and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Glial and glioneuronal tumors in the occipital lobe are uncommon lesions that have unique clinical and surgical considerations because of their connection to the visual cortex, optic radiations, and posterior associative networks. Information on these tumors is scattered across case reports, small series, and limited retrospective studies. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify studies reporting primary occipital lobe tumors such as glial, ependymal, or glioneuronal types. Eligible tumors included diffuse gliomas, glioblastoma, astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, piloc

Mapping the Phenotypic Spectrum of Occipital Lobe Epilepsy: A SEEG-Defined Network Classification.

OBJECTIVE: Occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) often presents with complex clinical symptoms that extend beyond the occipital lobe, posing significant challenges for diagnosis and lesion localization. This study aims to systematically characterize the seizure phenotype spectrum of OLE using stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) and elucidates its electrophysiological and anatomical basis. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective case series included 19 patients who underwent comprehensive SEEG evaluation. Seizure phenotypes were classified based on the initial and evolving clinical manifestations.

Proteomic and Phosphoproteomic Characteristics of Multiple Brain Regions in Rhesus Macaques After SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant is more contagious than the original Alpha variant and can still cause neurological symptoms, including cognitive impairment. To gain a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying these neurological effects, this study was conducted. Proteomic and phosphoproteomic analyses were carried out utilizing LC-MS/MS. Samples included brainstem, cerebellum, frontal lobe, occipital lobe, parietal lobe, and temporal lobe from SARS-CoV-2 Omicron-infected and noninfected control rhesus macaques. Infection with Omicron resulted in inflammatory responses across

Reproductive factors and brain volume in community-dwelling individuals: the Ohasama Study.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive history can be conceptualized as a life-course exposure integrating biological and social factors. Although reproductive factors have been associated with stroke risk and cognitive function, their relationships with structural brain changes remain unclear. Evidence from general population-based studies linking reproductive factors to brain volume, an intermediate marker of cognitive decline, is limited. This study examined whether age at menarche, age at menopause, estrogen exposure duration, and parity are associated with brain volume in postmenopausal women. METHODS

BRAINHash: Brain-Inspired Region-Aligned Interaction Network for Unsupervised Cross-Modal Hashing.

Unsupervised cross-modal hashing (UCMH) has attracted considerable attention owing to its minimal reliance on manual annotations and low retrieval latency. However, existing UCMH methods based on contrastive learning frameworks combined with multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) often suffer from two key limitations: the inherent challenge in constructing reliable positive-negative sample pairs under unsupervised settings, and the restricted representational capacity of static network architectures. Inspired by cognitive mechanisms observed in the human brain, where specialized regions support distinc

Comparative Analysis of Four Commercially Available Artificial Intelligence Software for Brain Volumetry.

Background/Objectives: Automated brain volumetry is increasingly integrated into the work-up of several neurological disorders, yet between-software variability may limit the interchangeability of absolute measures. This study aimed to assess inter-software variability, agreement, and interchangeability among four clinically available AI-based brain volumetry tools. Methods: We conducted a single-center, retrospective comparison of four clinically available tools (Neurophet AQUA®, icobrain dm®, mdbrain®, Pixyl®) applied to identical 3D T1-weighted MRI examinations (IR-FSPGR, 1 mm isotropic) ac

Human cerebellar microstructure with 7T MRI: Spherical b-tensor encoding and super resolution reconstruction.

Cerebellar function and structure remain less studied compared with the cerebrum, and while high-resolution 7T gives superior anatomical information, methods to visualise its microstructure in vivo are not widely available. However, improved understanding of cerebellar microstructure is highly clinically relevant: the granular layer of the cerebellum, located in the grey matter, contains the majority of the brain's neurons and has been shown in post mortem studies to be affected by various diseases. The limited spatial resolution of MR does not resolve individual cell layers, but advanced diff

Lateral occipitotemporal cortex, extrastriate body area, and the somatic prior: disentangling feature and function.

Is the extrastriate body area is best characterized as a narrowly defined, feature-selective region or as a node whose significance depends on its network? We argue that this opposition is misleading: feature-level claims (what a region responds to) and function-level claims (what its output is used for) answer different questions and cannot substitute for one another. Recent evidence indicates that the extrastriate body area's degree of feature tuning, including the species-specific tuning relevant to conspecific detection, itself depends on the network it is coupled to, and lateral occipitot

Aberrant network topology of cortical-subcortical circuits in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: a graph theory study.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SCH) or bipolar disorder (BD) patients exhibit a variety of abnormalities in brain network organization and function. More comprehensive characterization of both shared and disease-specific network features could provide essential clues to the underlying pathogenesis of these disorders, as well as potential therapeutic targets. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we used graph theory methods to examine the common and specific characteristics of brain network between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. METHOD: The patients of schizophrenia (n = 89) , patients of bipolar disor

Distribution of amphetamine, benzoylecgonine, cocaethylene, cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine in seven regions of the brain.

Brain tissue is a potentially valuable postmortem specimen because of its relative anatomical isolation, reduced susceptibility to postmortem degradation, and relevance as the primary site of action for many drugs. Despite the frequent detection of stimulants and synthetic opioids in medicolegal death investigations, limited data exist regarding their regional distribution within the human brain. This study evaluated the distribution of amphetamine (AMP), methamphetamine (MAMP), cocaine, benzoylecgonine, cocaethylene, and fentanyl across seven anatomically distinct brain regions (basal ganglia

Visuomotor mismatch EEG responses over occipital cortex of freely moving human subjects.

Likely the strongest predictor of visual feedback is self-motion. In mice, the coupling between movement and visual feedback is learned with first visual experience of the world, and brief perturbations of the coupling result in strong visuomotor mismatch responses in visual cortex that possibly reflect prediction errors. In humans, predictive coding has primarily been studied using oddball paradigms, which rely on violations of stimulus probability based on recent sensory history. It was still unclear, however, whether humans exhibit visuomotor mismatch responses similar to those observed in

Pediatric occipital lobe epilepsy: A modern review of etiological classification, management, and outcomes.

Pediatric occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) comprises syndromes with seizures originating from the posterior cerebral cortex. Previously "benign", recent International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) updates reclassified these as self-limited or structural focal epilepsies, reflecting their complex causes and morbidity potential. The 2017 ILAE guidelines shifted from syndromic recognition to an etiology-driven approach. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging is crucial to differentiate self-limited genetic syndromes from structural OLE (e.g., focal cortical dysplasia), as the latter often requi

FuzzyEn Compared to SampEn for Evaluation of Dynamic Complexity.

Fuzzy entropy (FuzzyEn) theoretically outperforms sample entropy (SampEn) in quantifying dynamic complexity; however, its anti-noise robustness remains insufficiently validated. This study compares SampEn and FuzzyEn using model simulations and real-world depression electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. The two entropy metrics are first compared using chaotic time series generated from the logistic and two-dimensional Henon maps, with additive white Gaussian noise (SNRs ranging from 1 to 10 dB). Surrogate data analysis reveals that SampEn maintains stronger nonlinear detection performance (lower

An analysis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy based on samples from human brain bank.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a common age-associated cerebrovascular disease marked by amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation in cerebral vessel walls, and it is tightly linked to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cognitive impairment. However, the specific mechanism in CAA progression remains poorly elucidated. METHODS: We analyzed 49 autopsy samples obtained from the Human Brain Bank of Hebei Medical University, collected basic pathological data and explored the correlations between CAA and Alzheimer's disease neuropathologic change (ADNC). Transcriptomic sequencing was performed on 21
